So Long Soldier

Chapter 4.

Alex's POV

I couldn't get her out of my head. Her smile, her laugh, the way she bit her lip when she was thinking...

"Alex?" Jack waved his hand infront of my eyes.
"Huh?"
"I asked if you wanted to go get some coffee..."
"Oh, yeah sure. Starbucks?"
"So you can see this girl again?" Jack teased.
"No! I just want Starbucks!" I said defensively. Jack raised his eyebrows at me. "And I like her too..." I added quietly. "But she might not even be there. She hasn't been at work all week."
"Have you spoken to her since Sunday?"
"Nope. Her phone's off and she's not home every time I go round there."
"Well, Alex, I hate to say it, but maybe it was just a-"
"Don't say it Jack. Don't say that it was just a one night stand. I really like h-" I stopped myself and thought about what I was confessing to my best friend. "Shit, forget it. I sound like the biggest fuckhead. You're probably right. She was probably just another girl sleeping with me because I'm in a band..."

Nebraska wasn't working yet again and I left the coffee shop filled with disappoinment.
"I'm going to check if she's home again."
"Alex-"
I stopped Jack before he could say any more and walked off in the opposite direction, my head down low against the breeze.

I knocked on the door a few times before giving up and stood there for a minute.
"She's moved away," said a soft voice from across the hall. An elderly woman turned to me as she opened the door to her apartment. My heart sunk.
"Do you know where?" I asked.
"No, sorry love."
"That's okay. Thanks anyway." I trudged down the stairs and out into the cold weather.

-

Three weeks had passed and I found myself in Starbucks yet again, suffering a deadly hangover and desperately needing caffeine. I ordered my coffee and waited. As my name was called and I collected my order, I saw a glimpse of that dark brown hair and deep blue eyes by the kitchen door. We stared at eachother for a moment until she disappeared. I shook my head and sighed. I was probably imagining it.

-

"Jack, I swear I saw her!"
"Dude come on, you were probably still drunk from last night."
I sighed into the phone. "Whatever..."
"And about that... Man, you've been drinking pretty heavily lately. You should probably give it a rest... We go on tour soon and you need to save yourself for that."
"Yeah... Okay," I said, pouring myself a drink... "Look, I need sleep. See you tomorrow."
"Night bro."
I hung up the phone and stretched out on the couch.

-

The doorbell woke me up and I rolled off the couch, making a loud thump as I fell on the floor. I groaned and got up, looking at the time. Who the fuck would be visiting me at 1 in the morning on a stormy night? I opened the front door to find a soaking wet and shivering Nebraska.
"Jesus Christ." I pulled her into my arms, not wanting to let go any time soon.

Comments

So I just read what you have of this story and I really like it so far. I'm bummed to see it was never completed or continued, though. :(
Alex and Nebraska's relationship is so sweet and I just love them together. I think that's a really unique name for a main character as well.
If you ever choose to pick this up again and finish it, I will be here to read. Wanted to leave a comment to let you know that. I think you're a really great writer, and think this story deserves an ending if you can ever find yourself writing for it again. :)
