Alex's POV

I woke up alone. A stream of light peeked through a gap in the curtains, notifying me that it was the morning. It was quiet, and I thought that maybe Nebraska had left me, until I heard movement from the kitchen. I smiled a little and got out of bed, slipping on my boxers, and wandered out of the bedroom. Neb was facing the stove with her back to me, wearing my shirt from last night. I crept up quietly behind her.
"Goodmorning," I whispered in her ear. She jumped a little and spun around quickly.
"Jesus Christ! You could have like, coughed or something! Scared the shit out of me Alex!" She went to playfully punch me but I caught her wrist and held her still. She grinned at me. I swear I would never get that smile out of my head.
"I'm cooking breakfast. There wasn't much in the fridge so I hope you like eggs and toast..."
"Perfect," I said and kissed her on the forehead. I let her go and watched her plate up the food. We sat on the couch and ate our breakfast quietly.
"Nebraska?" I asked her after a while.
"Mm?" She replied with a mouthful of food.
"Do you... Do you believe in love?"
She thought about it for a few seconds while she swallowed her food. "Nah."
"Why not?"
"Alex, I come from a broken family..."
"Well so do I..."
She sighed and carried on. "I'm kind of expected to not believe in it I guess. I don't know. Maybe I'll believe it if I find it..."
I nodded. "Fair enough."
"Do you?" She asked suddenly.
"Yeah... I do," I said, looking her in the eye. She blushed and looked away, the hint of a smile on her face.

Nebraska's POV

I fell asleep on Alex with him stroking my hair. Next thing I knew, his soft voice pulled me out of my dreams.
"Neb, wake up." I opened my eyes to see him looking down at me.
"What's up?" I said, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.
"It's 3 in the afternoon."
"Oh shit, did I fall asleep on you?! Sorry!"
He laughed at me. "Yeah but it's fine, I dozed off aswell. I should get home now."
"Oh, right. Good idea. Mom should be home soon anyway." We both got up off the couch. "Thank you for last night Alex, I had a great time."
"No worries, Nebraska. I'll see you again soon?"
"Definitely," I said with a smile. I walked him over to the front door and he pulled me into a huge hug. I felt so safe. He let go and smiled at me quickly, then disappeared into the cold air outside.

I stayed up late, thinking about everything we had done, everything Alex had said to me. Did it mean anything, when he was asking about true love? I tried not to get carried away with it. I hadn't had anyone interested in me in so long I didn't know what to think. Maybe it was just a one night stand yeah? A drunken night. After all, he is in a band, and I just work at a coffee shop. It would never work.

It got to 11pm and my mom was still not home. She said she'd be home that afternoon, but it was well past. I tried calling her mobile multiple times but no answer. I was sat on the couch, my eyelids threatening to close on me, when there was a knock at the door. I got up and hurried over, opening it to find a police officer.
"Nebraska Johnston?"
"Yes? How can I help you officer?"
