Misery Business

New Friends

Victoria had better days, but was lucky the cinema gave her Friday afternoons off and only the night shift. She spent the day like the adult she now was: grocery shopping and going to the bar for a drink. She hated grocery shopping. Everything was so expensive and there was so many people getting in her way as she tried to get from aisle to aisle. Couldn’t she just go back to being seventeen?

At five thirty, she walked to the elevator to get to her car for the night shift. It was a Friday night, and it was definitely going to be busy, what with the last Twilight movie releasing. Fun.

Just because she had that morning and afternoon off, it didn’t mean the theater didn’t let her off the hook. They made her take a couple of free tickets to give to people and try to advertise. Being the non-pushy person she was, she didn’t, and would have to feel the wrath of her manager.

She held the free tickets tight in her hand and she snugged her jacket around her uniform. The shirt was horrifically ugly, and anything to hide it helped. The elevator doors closed, leaving her with the annoying elevator music.

The elevator soon stopped at the fourth floor, letting a small, petite girl with long brunette hair on. She looked up at Victoria with bright blue eyes, happy to see another neighbor the same age as her. “Hi!” She greeted, throwing her manicured hand out to shake. “Do you live here as well?”

She wanted to say, “Obviously,” but couldn’t bring herself to. The girl seemed too sweet to mock. So all she did was laugh, “Yeah. You must be new.”

“I’m Lisa.” She giggled, shaking hands.

“Victoria,” the dark blonde greeted, somewhat remembering Lisa’s face somewhere. High school? No …

Lisa looked at the nametag sticking out from Victoria’s uniform. “Oh, you work at the movie theater! That must be fun!”

Victoria snorted, “Define fun.”

“I’m just going down to meet my boyfriend at a restaurant and we’ll be going there tonight.”

“Seeing the new Twilight movie?”

“Of course!” She seemed so positive and full of life. She was the complete opposite from Victoria, but kind of brightened her spirits.

Victoria soon looked down at the free tickets in her hands as the elevator’s doors opened and they walked out. “Wait!” She called to Lisa, causing her to get a surprised reaction. That look, Victoria swore she knew Lisa from somewhere. “Do you need free tickets?”

“Really?” She squeaked. “That’d be awesome!”

Victoria put the tickets in Lisa’s hand. “No need to thank me.”

“But I want to!” Lisa then caught her arm. “Thank you, Victoria.”

Victoria shrugged at the gesture, running out of the lobby to her car. She knew Lisa from somewhere. She was sure of it. But where?
