Bulletproof Love

No Way Out of This Fade Out

By the end of the week, they had managed to get their drummer. They had already chosen another guy, but he had a tough time playing Blink’s “Rollercoaster,” so they went searching for another drummer. His name was Rian and was probably more mature than a parent. It made Victoria wonder why Jack chose him in the first place, but it was probably because of the sick Face to Face shirt he wore. They all sounded great together, and now all they needed was a base player. But Jack already had an idea for who that would be.

As Jack made some calls that Sunday, Alex walked across the street and climbed through Victoria’s window. She never locked it. They were at Jack’s playing until eleven on Saturday and Victoria, being the early sleeper as she was, hit the hay as soon as she got home. Alex poked her arm as she stirred in her sleep. It was only ten AM; she should be awake.

“Hamilton …” He called. “Hey, Hamilton, wake the fuck up. I’m bored.”

Just as he shook her shoulder, her eyes fluttered open. She saw Alex looking down at her, and for the slightest second, she thought she was dreaming. She blinked her eyes a few times, noticing it was real. “What are you doing here?” She rubbed at her eyes.

“The question is: why are you not awake?”

She pushed her face into the pillow again. “I’m tired.”

“Come on! Life’s worth enjoying! It’s a Sunday; let’s enjoy it while it lasts.”

She opened one eye. “What did you have in mind?”

He soon got her out of bed and dressed. They walked all around town, Victoria pointing out her favorite spots for pizza and coffee. They ventured off into the woods and found the old, abandoned swing set Victoria loved. By the time they got back to Victoria’s house, it was three PM. Their fun day couldn’t be over.

They spent the rest of their time in Victoria’s room, laying on her bed and talking about their lives. Victoria told him about how she’s been bullied since freshman year and her panic attacks. But she wasn’t prepared for what Alex had. He had told her about his half-brother, Tom, who had died from alcohol poisoning when he was just 12 years old. Alex had his head turned away while he explained; only telling Victoria that he didn’t want her to see him crying.

She didn’t know what to say or do. She tried her best to console, caressing his arm up and down and laying her head on his shoulder. He didn’t move away or even move at all. They laid there for a while: Alex looking away with Victoria’s head on his bicep.

He had finally stirred at the sound of “Night Drive” by Jimmy Eat World. He looked over at Victoria, who was mumbling the lyrics under her breath and closing her eyes. The lyrics of the song were like a melody sent from heaven, and looking down at Victoria, he noticed that she was the angel.

She had listened and she had cared. She hadn’t said anything, and that was what he wanted. She always did everything right.

And it was in that moment that Alex entwined his fingers with hers.
