Bulletproof Love

The Prom Thing

Since the meeting with Emerald Moon Records, All Time Low had gotten signed. The label was kind of small, but enough to reach a target audience, as Alex had described. The band had also managed to get a manager, Matt Flyzik. Victoria thought he looked like a good guy, but suspected he knew when to draw the line if something were to ever happen.

Matt was a great manager, if she were to be honest with herself. She was surprised at how quickly he managed to score the band gigs at various places near their town. He was also really good at getting their lazy asses into gear, because in just these few months, they already had songs for an album ready to be recorded. The only bummer was that Matt seemed to make these days go by quicker.

Three months seemed to go by so fast, and it was finally June. Prom was right at Victoria’s fingertips and she didn’t want to go. She didn’t even know why she agreed in the first place. Maybe if she didn’t go, time would stop and the days would go by slower. But there was no way out of this, she had realized as she walked down stairs to her smiling parents. These were the moments she needed to appreciate before Alex grad―

As if on cue, there he was. Waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs with her parents, was Alex. She almost tripped on her long dress when she saw him. She wore a simple gown with no straps and a beautiful mauve color that faded into a lighter version of that color at the bottom. Alex had a matching light purple bowtie that made her laugh when she reached the bottom of the stairs. The second she was near him, she entwined her fingers with his own, never wanting to let go.

Victoria’s mom, as usual, took too many pictures than it was needed. But for once, Victoria didn’t care. She never even expected herself to go to prom in the first place, and as much as she didn’t want to go, she was going to enjoy it.

Victoria managed to break away from her parents and run into Alex’s car before another picture was taken. Alex started the car and looked over at her, brushing a few waves out of Victoria’s face. “You look beautiful, by the way.”

“And I thought purple wasn’t my color.” She grinned his way.

They arrived at Jack’s house and met with the others. Victoria almost fell on the floor from laughter at Jack’s getup: a bright white suit with a baby blue vest and bowtie. But they all looked great, and as usual, Zack looked the most normal out of them all.

Victoria looked over at all the boys’ dates and noticed she didn’t know any of them, making her feel a bit inferior. She was distracted by this when she felt a tap on her shoulder and saw Alex carrying a box in his hands. “I think this is for you.” He said, removing the white corsage from the box and putting it around her wrist.

She then remembered. “Fuck,” she whispered. “I forgot the boutonniere.”

“You’re not really up to date with the prom thing, are you?”

“I’m sorry,” she muttered, looking down.

“Well, you’re lucky then.” He held his head high. “Being the smartass that I am and knowing you’d forget about it, I took it in my ability to buy the cheapest boutonniere I could find and say you got it for me.” He said, handing her the small flower pin.

“Are you calling me cheap?” She eyed him as she pinned the white rose on his breast pocket.

“Just a little bit,” he chuckled.

The whole group took a big picture and soon headed off to the school. The building was packed with teenagers, even more than the Snowflake Dance. Victoria and Alex soon had to divert from the group to actually get through the high school and to the gymnasium. The theme was Monte Carlo, and all the gambling tables in the gym made it even harder to move around.

Just as Victoria was about to head over to the drinks table, Alex decided he had a better idea and twirled her around to the dance floor. “That wasn’t fair,” she said over the loud sounds of Madonna.

“I don’t know, I think it’s pretty fair.” He smirked and held her close as they danced.

They danced for a while until Victoria dragged him back to a table to eat. They met back with the guys and talked, mostly about how Jack didn’t get caught again with spiking the punch. “Senior prom is going out with a bang!” The skunk-haired boy exclaimed.

The very last hour of the dance, Victoria then realized how fast the night had gone. She was surprised she was having fun and managed to not care how she looked in front of people. In a lucky change of events, Jack got the DJ to play The Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” for the last song.

Victoria gladly took Alex’s hand as he led her to the dance floor. He pulled her closer to him by her back as she hung her arms across his neck, settling her head on his shoulder. She felt his lips kiss the side of her forehead, causing her to shiver and smile at the same time. “I’ve never seen anyone so beautiful in a dress,” he whispered in her ear. “But I bet you’d look even better out of it.”

She laughed and only held onto him tighter. It was these moments―being so close to him and listening to their favorite songs―that she needed to stop taking for granted. Graduation was right on their heels, and it was this moment that those stupid thoughts seemed to melt away.

She was with him, and that was all she cared about.
