Bulletproof Love

Jealous Douches

She hadn’t talked to Alex for a couple of days. She purposely avoided him―even taking the bus to and from school because of the weather. She didn’t want to talk to him or see him. She had her reasons though: she didn’t want to fight again and she was in fear the next time they saw each other, he would end it.

But in some ways, she longed to see him. She wanted to see him and run into his arms, saying how sorry she was for being stupid, like the cheesy chick flicks. It never happened for a few days though, no matter how much the rest of the band tried to get her to see him.

She hated spending afternoons alone and taking the horrible bus where papers and pens were thrown at the back of her head. This was her life before Alex, and she never realized how much it really sucked. And it wasn’t like she had any more friends to hang out with; they probably all forgotten her months ago.

It was Friday of that week that she sat alone near her window, watching the snowflakes drifting past. The sun was practically gone, leaving it clear to see all the lights on in her neighbors houses. She could still spot a few Christmas trees in her next door neighbors’ houses. She sighed as she looked to her desk, spotting her unfinished sketch of Alex’s house that she started months ago.

She was just about to start it again when she looked across the street. Right in his bedroom window, she spotted Alex pulling his shirt over his head as he grabbed a few notebooks from his bag. She smiled as she watched him sit down and pull on a thick sweatshirt, hunching over his homework at his desk. She then remembered the afternoons at the start of the school year she spent helping him study and do homework while he laid on the bed next to her shirtless, allowing her to feel his warmth when she pulled him close. “Clothes make me lose focus” was his excuse. It was such a ridiculous custom that they did, but she never cared.

She sullenly looked away and walked back to her bed, realizing it was already ten PM. She slowly shut every light off and changed into her pajamas, feeling eyes trained on her as she tried to drift off to sleep.

She soon woke up at about two AM to the sounds of knocking at her window. She rubbed the sleep away from her eyes and drowsily walked to her window. She lifted the window and instantly wanted to shut it. Alex. No, she wasn’t ready; she couldn’t face him now.

“Hey, Hamilton,” he whispered with a small smile. “Long time, no see?”

She stared at him, a mix of shock and sadness. Was he here to break up with her finally?

“Can I come inside?” He then asked.

“My parents are―”

“Victoria,” he whispered. He knew when she was avoiding him.

She lifted the window more and he climbed inside her bedroom, shaking the snowflakes from his sweatshirt and hair. He turned to her, noticing she was sitting on the ground and looking at her hands. He did the same, glancing over at her and back at his own hands.

“I’m really sorry.” He said after a moment, causing her to look up in shock. “I totally understand now why you were hurt and I didn’t mean to call you stupid.”

“You really don’t―”

“Victoria, let me finish.” He said, surprising her by lacing his fingers with hers. “I know that you share our dreams with hoping the band to succeed, but if we do become big, this thing will start happening more than usual. I want to keep you around. I know I’ve never really had a long, committed relationship before, but I want us to work and I’m going to try my hardest to―”

She suddenly cupped his cheek and pulled his lips to hers. She didn’t need to hear the rest; she understood. After a whole school week of not speaking, this felt right. They always felt right. Besides, he would’ve never shut up if she didn’t kiss him.

She leaned away, whispering, “I’m sorry too.”

“For what?”

“For being a jealous douche,” she softly chuckled.

He ran his fingers in the back on her hair, smiling. “We’re all jealous douches sometimes, Hamilton.” He then kissed her forehead. “But it just shows how much people love each other.”

She smiled, but then frowned, hitting his shoulder. “Ow!” He whispered, rubbing his shoulder. “What was that for?!”

“You scared me!” She whispered back. “I thought you came to break up with me.”

“At two AM? Do you not know me?”

“Shut the fuck up,” she smiled, leaning in and connecting their lips again.

It was right then she knew that if she could survive five days without talking to Alex, she could survive anything.
