Bulletproof Love

The Unwanted Christmas Dance

Victoria and Alex became inseparable. They had become two halves of a whole. Victoria always thought she’d be a half her whole life, searching for another half to create her own whole. Little did she know she’d find him so early in her life.

They had started going everywhere together. She always attended his band practices and hung out with his friends. She drifted away from most of her own friends actually, but it wasn’t like they noticed. She liked being around his music and his friends, and just him in general. He became a central part of her life that she couldn’t go back from. She was the addict and he was her drug of choice.

They even had their parents agree to the relationship. Sensing her dad’s dislike of him, Alex took the direct approach and invited her family for another dinner with his own. The parents met again with new, fresh minds that their kids wanted to date. And after a little persuading by the Gaskarths, Victoria’s parents agreed.

The band was going great. By the time December rolled along, they already had a full cover set list. Bands like Blink and Green Day, also New Found Glory and Nirvana, were being covered by the band. They even had a few originals on the list too. Now all All Time Low needed was their first gig.

As soon as the date of Snowflake Dance―also known as “The Unwanted Christmas Dance”―was announced, Jack and Rian contacted the principle and the student council to get permission to play at the dance. After a little pressuring by Rian, the plans were made. All Time Low was playing at the Snowflake Dance.

Jack had declared the good news at an afternoon band practice, causing everyone to jump in triumph. “Congrats, guys,” Victoria exclaimed as Alex pulled her into his embrace. “You guys might actually make that dance bearable.”

“Might?” Rian questioned as he ruffled the top of her head.

“I guess you’re going to find out, aren’t you?” Alex lifted an eyebrow.

She narrowed her eyes at him. “Is that supposed to mean something?”

“He’s asking you to the dance, dumbass,” Jack shook his head as he unplugged the amp with Zack.

She glanced back at Alex, who was smirking. “In his words, yes, I was.” Victoria frowned a little, causing Alex to scoff, “Don’t tell me you’re one of those girls who ‘don’t do dances.’”

“Would you be mad at me if I was?”

“Well, it doesn’t really matter what you say, because you’re going.” He said, pushing her bangs out of the way and kissing the top of her head with a smirk.

Jack hooked his arm around her shoulders. “You really think we’d let you miss our first gig?”

“Okay, okay. I’m going, alright?” She chuckled.

The only good thing about the Snowflake dance―at least in Victoria’s eyes―was that it wasn’t a formal dance. Of course, there was that little “no sweatpants allowed” rule that got in Victoria’s way, but she still was grateful she didn’t need to wear a dress. She settled with a pair of dark skinny jeans, ankle boots, and a long maroon sweater. Maybe she could blend in with the maroon walls of the cafeteria if it came to it.

The band had decided to go down to the school two hours early for set up, except for Alex. At six o’clock he arrived at her house in a suit and tie with a big grin spread on his face. (They had all decided to break the rules since they were the performers and wear suits to the dance.) Alex had also decided he wanted to mix up the whole “guy gets the girl flowers” rule and have Victoria get him a flower. Victoria found it ridiculous to just get flowers for each other anyway, but knowing she couldn’t win this argument, she had now handed Alex his small red rose bouquet as he stood on her doorstep.

“Are these for me?” He exclaimed in his best interpretation of Victoria. “Oh, you shouldn’t have!”

“That is the worst impression of me ever.” She laughed softly as her mom called for pictures, even though Victoria had been complaining that the dance wasn’t prom and they didn’t need pictures.

They made the silliest faces, seeing as they already looked like the worst couple ever in their outfits: a boy in a suit and a girl dressed casual. But it wasn’t like they minded―they knew they were the worst couple ever.

They left for the school and arrived just in time. Alex parked the car and caught Victoria staring at him. “What?” He smiled his lopsided smile.

“I know you’re going to do great tonight,” she muttered, entwining her fingers with his.

“You’re enthusiasm is the only thing that keeps me going, Hamilton.” He said as he brought their tangled hands to his lips and kissed them.

They walked into the dance with locked arms, enjoying the stares they got at their outfits. “Why so many stares?” Alex whispered to her as they walked into the cafeteria.

“It’s not every day you get to see Alex Gaskarth in a suit.” Victoria then said over the music.

He chuckled as they pushed through the small crowds of students, Victoria covering her ears as Britney Spears blasted through the speakers. Extremely loud music was her enemy. They met up with the band by the drinks table, already spotting Jack hovering over the punch bowl with a flask in his hands.

“You couldn’t wait until prom?” Alex joked, slapping his best friend on the back.

“You should never miss an opportunity like this!” Jack laughed.

Rian put a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “We go on stage in thirty.”

“That early?”

Zack nodded. “Principle’s ending the dance early.” He then glanced over at Jack. “I wonder why.”

“But that doesn’t give us a lot of time to dance!” Alex sighed as Victoria raised a fist happily.

“Yes!” She exclaimed, but then lowered the fist as Alex looked at her. “I mean, boo.”

Victoria and the whole band danced around the cafeteria for a while, trying to copy their insane dance moves. Victoria had never laughed so much in her life as she watched Jack dance actually sober. (Although, who knows? He might’ve had some of that spiked punch.) Soon, they took the stage.

They announced who they were and Alex gave his usual lopsided smile at the crowd, Victoria swearing she could hear a few girls fainting somewhere in the cafeteria. Out of nowhere, they started playing “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters. The crowd didn’t quite know the song, but started dancing to it nevertheless. It was because, in their realization, they noticed music is music.

All Time Low went through song through song on their cover list, even playing one original titled “The Next Best Thing,” something Alex had wrote months ago about his girlfriend who cheated. The performance had gone great, because they soon had everyone on their feet and dancing. But it was the end of the set that she didn’t expect.

After making a stupid joke he’d surely get in trouble for later, Jack shouted, “This is the last song!”

The tune of “Night Drive” by Jimmy Eat World started to fill the speakers. Alex’s eyes met Victoria’s as Jack’s fingers strummed the rhythm. “This song goes out to my beautiful girlfriend,” Alex spoke into the mic, his eyes never leaving hers. “I love you, Victoria.”

She had barely been listening to the start of the song because of shock. Alex had never told her he loved her before. She bit down on her lip so hard to hide her stupid grin as Alex sang along to the beautiful lyrics that became their song.

She was really glad she attended this dance.
