Chasing the Future
Prologue (Alex POV)
Today was Mari’s first birthday. I had prepared everything alone, like I always did nowadays. Jack didn’t really care that much anymore, sometimes he had a bright moment and was all sweet and helpful, but most of the time he just didn’t do a thing.
It had all started out so perfect, he was always helping me, changing Mari’s diapers, preparing her milk and later the food, doing whatever I asked him to do. We had been a perfect team. But he had been very scared, he himself had had a bad childhood; his father had beaten him, abused him, and caused him to fall into an eating disorder.
He had regularly had panic attacks because of having to be a father, and he was slowly slipping into another way of bad parenting. Of course, he was not beating or abusing us, he just neglected me and Mari.
I didn’t fully know what was going on, and I didn’t have the time to investigate, after all, I had a toddler to care for. All I knew was that he stayed out long in the evenings, apparently to work late (He has taken on an office job now our band isn’t the main source of income anymore; we still make quite a lot of money from band merch, but his job is a constant source of income.) or to meet friends. I am not happy with that, and I already told him; he said he would change, but so far nothing has happened.
We had half an hour left until the guests came. Mari was all dressed up, the room was decorated and the cake prepared. Only the mums and dads from the toddler’s group would come with their babies, but I wanted to make a good impression on them.
This would actually have been possible, if not Jack had come stumbling in, obviously very drunk, slurring cusses. He was dangerously close to the cake, I ran over to gently push him away from there and bring him upstairs. I was confused, luckily I could leave Mari alone with the dog, Danny, for a second. Why was Jack drunk at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon? I felt hurt too, if he was only out drinking he could just as well have helped me.
I tucked him in and just hoped he wouldn’t wake up during the party and ruin everything.
