Me Without You

Chapter 3

It was the day of the wedding and everyone was rushing around the venue trying to get everything in place. The venue was three hours from our home town of Portland. So far it was a sunny day but knowing Portland it wouldn't stay like the for much longer. I scurried up the church steps and through the big wooden doors.

Flowers loitered the hallways as delivery men brought in the bouquets. White curtains hung from the tall church windows giving the room a romantic glow. The pews had a bow attached to each of them and some one had rolled out a ivory sheet down the isle.

The place where the bride and freon would be standing was decorated with candles and the granite steps leading up to the area made it all much more better.

The scene was breathtakingly beautiful and I couldn't help but feel a little jealous. Everyone around me either was getting married or had a boyfriend. All I had was my Ben and Jerry's chunky money ice cream and tv. I longed to have someone surprise me with flowers randomly during the day, I wanted to hold hands while walking down the sidewalk with someone. I wanted someone to love me for once, to want to spend every waking minute with me. I wanted someone who thought I was worth it, worth this body and mass and space that I take up.

Letting out a sigh I went to my dressing room to get ready. The walls had photos of the bride and groom, from the first time they met to when he proposed. The photo where he proposed was my favorite because of the raw emotion in their faces. The way he looked up at her from his one knee and how she looked down on him. Pure love radiated off of them and you can tell that they will be together for a long long time.

Getting closer to my dressing room that I shared with Susan I heard a familiar voice, stopping me in my tracks. Where had I heard that voice before? Associating the voice with Kathy's fiancé Mike just shouting orders around, I turned the handle opening the door to my dressing room.

The room had white walls and a red and green diamond patterned carpet. On the wall hung a full body mirror and across on the other wall was a smaller mirror with a dresser pushed up against it. All the makeup Susan and I had was strewn across the dresser leaving no room for all the hair products we had packed. On a hanger hung my dress. A strapless purple dress similar to the one Susan had gotten at the mall the other day.

I took out my six inch black pumps and placed the by the full body mirror. I had no clue how I was going to walk in those but I had to make it work.

I quickly undressed and pulled the purple fabric on. It fit snugly on my body but I couldn't zipper it all the way, I needed Susan to do that for me. Susan and I helped each other out on everything since we became friends in the second grade. I thought about the time I had my first heartbreak and Susan went over to him and kicked him in the balls; how one time she got her foot stuck in a chair and I sawed it in half to get her out. We have had some weird memories but fun times. My girl Susan and I.

Certain she would be back any minute now I sat down and started to focus on today. Pulling different out shades of eyeshadow and lipstick I picked what would best match with the dress. I decided to go with a gunmetal shade of eyeshadow and lined my eyes with black eyeliner winging out the edges. I coated my eyelashes in mascara and applied a light pink shade of lipstick onto my lips.

After I finished applying my makeup I slipped on my shoes and then cleared the dresser and set up the straightener for my hair.

The door creaked open and assuming it was Susan because the mirror didn't reflect who it was I called out.

"Hey bitch zip up my dress." I called running the flat iron through my hair.

"I am not your bitch" the familiar voice from the hallway replied

Again I assumed it was Mike because it was the same voice from the hallway. I was so wrong. I spun around in my chair hands on my hips. I couldn't believe Mike would barge into the room like that. When my eyes spotted who really was standing at the door my mouth went dry. I needed to stop assuming things.

*Susans POV*

Running up the church steps I took a quick glance at my phone. Shit I was so late. I needed to get to Kathy and help get her ready. After all I was the one who had the job of picking up the dress. This thing weighed about a ton too so it wasn't helping me go any faster.

I'm sure Kathy was pacing around the room right about now cursing me out on my absence. I couldn't help that the caterer didn't know where the reception was going to be held or that the lady at the dress shop was still putting the finishing touches on the dress. I couldn't control people's stupidity.

I burst into the church getting some stares from decorators. I spotted Ashley and thought I should tell her I was getting ready in Kathy's room because I was so late but decided against it due to being so very very tardy.

Quickly finding Kathy's room I opened to door to a beyond angry bride.

"Where the HELL HAVE YOU BEEN!" She shouted into my face

"Maybe if you had given the caterers directions before or maybe didn't have so many damn details on this dr-" I started to explain before she cut me off

"Whatever all that matters is that you're here now." She said gesturing me to open the dress bag.

I carefully unzipped the dress and my eyes ran it up and down. It was white and had lace sleeves. It clung to the body and had diamonds around the waist. The back buttoned from the neck to the base of the back. Removing it from the bag I helped get it on Kathy. It made her look like royalty. She had never looked so happy in her life. All the negativity in her life was gone, it was just pure bliss on her face. The dress hugged her cures perfectly and the lace made her arms look much thinner than they already were.

I gave Kathy a hug and let her finish getting her makeup and hair done. Ashley creeping into my mind again I thought I should get someone to tell her where I was and that I was going to stay here to get ready.

I looked into the hallway and spotted a groomsmen in a black suit walking towards me. His head was hung low so he didn't notice my staring.

"Hey you" I called out

He looked up giving me a small smile.

"Can I assist you?" He asked almost in a sarcastic manner

"Hey watch it, sister of the bride here." I basically snapped. Not in the mood for attitude. "And anyway yeah I need you to pass on a message." I told him everything he needed to tell Ashley and her room number.

"Got it?" I said

He nodded and I sent him off.

Walking away he turned around and asked one more question.

"What's her name so I can properly address her?"

"Ashley" I replied

A wide smile spread across his face as he turned back around and disappeared around the corner.
