Me Without You

Chapter 2

The next morning I heard voices from the kitchen waking me up with a jolt. My mind drifted towards the events that had happened the previous day and I blushed pulling my knees to my chest, pulling the blankets with me. I couldn't seem to get the stranger...I mean Alex...out of my head.

I crept slowly out of my bed cracking all my joints in the process. I pulled my blue sweatshirt over my plaid pajamas and made my way across the hall into the kitchen. Awaiting my arrival was Susan and her soon to be married sister, Kathy. Sometimes I regret that I gave them both a key because they tended to barge in at anytime without notice.

Susan was sitting on the wooden chair picking at her pink nailpolish while Kathy was pacing back and forth with a crazed look in her eyes. Sadly, I wish I could say that this wasn't normal, that this has never happened before. But, this happens on a weekly basis and with the wedding coming up it has been happening more often. I considered changing the locks briefly but that would take to much time and effort.

"So what do I owe this pleasure to?" I said sarcastically, shoving my hands in the pockets. My fingers met the soft fabric and I couldn't help but touch it. This fabric softener was the bomb.

"Pleasure?! You think this is a pleasure?!!!" Kathy said in a high pitched voice, throwing her hands in the air as if I knew what the big deal was. They always expected me to understand what was going on without even telling me about anything. That was one downfall to this relationship, I was expected to know.

"Care to fill me in?" I suggested shrugging my shoulders

Kathy shook her head as if trying to shake off my question. She continued pacing and it was starting to aggravate me. Susan just sat there silently, offering no help either.

"I mean who the hell backs out of a wedding because 'they have a play to attend' what does that even mean??!!!!" Kathy said angrily walking around the kitchen, moving things around in frustration.

"my god damn maid of honor!" Kathy slapped her hand on the table creating a load smack. The papers I had laid out from work jostled around a little bit and I silently cursed her.

I was even more confused than prior to Kathy's rant and no one was mentioning anything. Susan must have noticed my confused state as she had cleared her throat to explain.

"Remember that I had to leave the diner early yesterday?" I nodded putting the pieces together.

"Well that was because I got a text from my dad saying Kathy needed me and she stated that her maid of honor ditched her and that she needed to consult with me right away to find a solution to the problem proposed." Her words sunk in but that still didn't explain why they were in my house at eight in the morning.

"You said you had to cook for her in laws!" I said pointing at Kathy

"yeah well it started out that way." Susan shrugged

"So why are you guys here?" I asked trying to clarify things up a bit.

"Well since my maid of honor bailed I decided to make Susan my maid of honor." Kathy explained to me, the red coloring of anger leaving her face. She was starting to calm down a little bit.

Walking around opening various cupboards, grabbing a bowl, spoon and some fruit loops I set it all down on the table. Opening the fridge I grabbed the milk and started making my famous recipe...cereal. Taking my pause to gather nourishment for my body Susan took this time to explain into further detail as to why they were here.

"Sooo since I'm the maid of honor we have one empty spot for a bridesmaid" Susan said hinting towards something. It all clicked in my mind as to why they were here and why Susan was leading on to something in her tone of voice. I dropped my spoon in the bowl and shook my head.

"We didn't even mention anything yet!" Susan argued already knowing damn well that I had caught on.

"Yeah but I know what you're going to ask" frustrated I picked up my empty bowl and dropped it in the dishwasher. Turning on the dishwasher I faced Kathy and Susan who both had a pleading look in their eyes.

"Please Ashley please please please be my bridesmaid! It would mean the world to me to have you up there!" Kathy begged clasping her hands and shaking them trying to guilt trip me.

"Besides I heard the groomsmen are cute" Susan winked at me

Contemplating the offer I thought "what the heck" all I have to do is stand there and look pretty for the cameras. I had seen the dresses and they were really pretty. That's was the good thing about Kathy, she didn't believe in buying ugly dresses for the bridal party.

"Come one Ash! I will buy you anything you want! Anything!" Kathy pleaded and Susan nodded in agreement mimicking her sister.

"Alright you've twisted my arm I will do it!" I agreed to it

"Great okay well you need to get ready because we have rehearsal in about six hours and it takes three hours to get to the church so we need to get a move on. " Kathy exclaimed

I had my work cut out for me.

I went to my room and decided to wear a purple tank top and black shorts. I quickly coated my eyes in eyeliner and mascara and met them back in the kitchen. Slipping my shoes on a thought popped into my head.

"Oh and while we're here I would like to take both your keys back. I do not want people barging into my house at random moment of the day." I said walking through the door and out the room.
