And Tell Me You Love Me

Board The Windows So That No One Knows Where We Are

Jack

I cover my face with my hands, groaning in defeat as I shuffle into a more comfortable position on the bench. I'm in the park, and I walked Alex home hours ago. Our date had been amazing, but one little detail had soured it all. I yet again shifted my position on the park bench, trying to warm up my cold body. What happens now?

I settled into my seat at the restaurant, looking around in satisfaction. Alex was going to love it. I messaged him the address and ordered a white wine while I waited. Fifteen minutes later, the caramel haired boy in question walked into the restaurant, looking around in awe. A waitress with blond hair came up to him, her arms crossed. He ignored her, continuing to look around the restaurant. His eyes met mine and he started over in my direction. The waitress huffed and tagged along, speaking sternly at him.

‘Excuse me, but you must leave now. We only accept those of high status or wealth here, and you,’ she looked him up and down, taking in his blue jeans and faded leather jacket, ‘are neither.’ I decided it was time to intervene, standing up and embracing the unfussed young man.

‘Alex,’ I greeted him, smiling widely. I looked over at the waitress, whose mouth had dropped open and eyes were wide. ‘Is there a problem with my date?’ I asked, smirking as she turned and speed walked to the kitchen. Alex and I sat down after we kissed each other’s cheeks. We were in what might be classified as a “fancy”, “high-class” restaurant, and not even straight couples kissed each other on the lips, with the exception of a marriage proposal possibly.

‘So, what do you think?’ I asked Alex as he settled into his chair.

‘I've been here five minutes, Jackie,’ Alex laughed, before continuing his line of thought, ‘but first impressions weren't that great.’

The blond waitress returned to our table, balancing a single glass of wine on her tray. I had asked my previous waitress to bring one out as soon as my date arrived.

She placed the sweet drink in front of Alex before turning to me,

‘I’m so sorry,’ she started before I cut her off.

‘I’m not the one you should be apologising to, you didn’t do any wrong to me,’ I looked at Alex, ‘however, you did to Mr,’ I paused, having a momentary memory lapse as I tried to recall Alex’s surname. Alex supplied it, when he realised that I wasn’t going to be saying it anytime soon.

‘Gaskarth,’ I finished, repeating Alex. The waitress turned to Alex, her cheeks burning.

‘I’m so sorry,’ she started apologising profusely, ‘is there anything I can do to make it up for you? Champagne for both of you on the house, possibly?’

Alex’s eyes flicked over to mine uncertainly. I quickly nodded before he answered rather stiffly,

‘Ah, yes. That will… suffice.’ The waitress exhaled the breath she had been holding and said,

‘Please, just call me over when you are ready to order and I will bring your champagne out with your meal.’ She walked off and I handed Alex a menu.

‘Does that normally happen?’ Alex asked.

‘What?’ I asked, unsure of what he was asking about. I scanned the menu, looking for something nice to eat – and maybe something that I could pronounce.

Alex put his menu down and looked up at me, his face turned into an expression of awe. ‘We just received free champagne. Is there something not abnormal about that?’

I shrugged in answer. It wasn't any different to me. We usually got some part of our meal of no charge. I had drinking champagne since I was sixteen, not much, but I had usually had half a glass whenever we went out anywhere upper class to eat. I had stopped when I saw the effect alcohol could have on a person when you had too much too often – it became addictive, a vicious cycle of drunken hazes followed by a brief spell of sobriety, only to land back in the dull sensation again.

‘Do you know what you would like to eat?’ I asked Alex. ‘They offer most types of food here.’ Alex shrugged.

‘I can’t understand anything. I’d just really like chicken.’ I signalled the waitress back over,

‘We’ll have a serving of Coc au Vin and Coquilles St. Jacques.’ I said, watching her scribble down our order.

‘Champagne?’ She asked.

‘Dom Perignon.’ I answered, seeing Alex’s blank expression.

It took almost forty five minutes for our food to be prepared, cooked and served. Our wine had been finished fifteen minutes ago, and I was dreading putting more alcohol into my system. My tolerance had gone down quite a bit, and this was one of my first nights of drinking in at least two years.

Alex's chicken dish was put down in front of him and his eyes widened when he tasted the sauce it was generously coated in. He made a noise of inmense enjoyment and continued to eat. My scallops were delicious and the salad on the side was fresh and crispy. I looked out th window as I was eating my meal, looking at how the stars could barely be seen thanks to the bright lights.

'What are you looking at?' Alex asked, looking out of the window too.

'The stars,' I said sadly.

'They're still up there, Jackie. Sparkling away as usual.' Alex said, finishing off his meal. I looked lower down from the stars and saw a face that made my mouth turn dry. We stared into each other's eyes, and I froze. Alex leaned over and shook me slightly.

'Jack, are you okay?' The person ran off, chilling me to the core.
