It's Like A Piece Of Me Is Missing (Tragedy)

A/N: TRIGGER WARNING: SCENES OF A CAR CRASH AND DEATH IF IT TRIGGERS YOU IN ANY WAY DO NOT PROCEED I DON'T WANT TO TRIGGER ANY MEMORIES YOU HAVE HAD OR I WILL FEEL HORRIBLE ;-;

Jack placed the bouquet of red roses in front of the grave. He knelt down as he brushed some frost away from the name plate. A young boy stood beside him, tears brimming his eyes as he clutched to his father's arm.

"Alexander William Gaskarth
December 14th 1987 - June 18th 2012
Beloved boyfriend, son, father, brother, friend and musician

Sing me to sleep
I'll see you in my dreams
"

Jack and his son Sam sat down by the grave, tears spilling from their eyes as they grieved. Jack can remember it as if it was yesterday. One small mistake cost him the love of his life. And he wasn't there to say goodbye, he couldn't tell Alex he loved him one last time.

"Daddy," Sam spoke quietly.

"Yes Sam?" he replied.

"Can you tell me what happened the night Daddy died, I don't remember much," he mumbled.

Jack sighed, pulling Sam into his lap as he tried to stop fresh tears streaming from his eyes. He wanted to lie and tell Sam it was a simple accident, but he couldn't. Sam was too smart and he knew when his own father was lying.

"I'll tell you son, just listen carefully," Jack whispered.

And with that, the story began.

~~~*~~~
June 18th, Jack's birthday. Unfortunately he had to work until 11pm, there was no way of getting out of work. He gazed at the clock that read 10:40pm, time seemed to slow for Jack. He looked at the picture that sat on his desk. It was a collage of himself and Alex, a few containing their adopted son, Sam. Jack smiled as he looked away and continued on with his work.
"What a day," he sighed, tapping his pen on the paper in front of him.
Meanwhile, Alex was on his way back home, little Sammy in the back seat.
"Daddy where are we going?" he asked.
"We're going home now Sammy, we're going to surprise your Dad with a nice big birthday cake and lots of presents," Alex replied.
Sam cheered as he continued to play with the Batman figurine he had. Alex smiled as he continued up the road in the car. It was a bit icy tonight, so he had to be careful.
"Damn weather," he cursed.
Alex rounded the corner, accidentally dropping something on the floor.
"Shit," he muttered, reaching down for it.
He couldn't crap it so he unclipped his seat belt and reached down more. A car horn blared as Alex gasped, looking up to see an oncoming car. He swerved to avoid the car, only to have his own car flip. Sammy screamed in fear as the car flipped and rolled five time. Alex was thrown from the car, smashing through the windscreen and landing on the grass. His body lay lifeless as the car came to a halt. Sam cried out in terror, tears streaming down his face as he looked out at his father who was not moving at all.
"Daddy!" he screamed. "Daddy!" he screamed again, tears blurring his vision.
An oncoming car saw the wreck as the passengers exited the car.
"Holy crap! Dude call 911! There's a kid in here too!" a voice yelled, belonging to Billie Joe Armstrong.
He knelt down beside the car and looked inside as he gasped.
"Sammy!" he yelled.
"Uncle Billie! Daddy isn't moving!" Sam cried.
"Jesus Christ, Alex! Alex!" Billie yelled, running up to Alex.
Billie crouched beside Alex, looking for a pulse.
"Come on Alex, don't leave us man!" he yelled, starting to perform CPR.
~~~*~~~

Sam wiped tears away from his Dad's eyes and hugged him tight.

"Please continue," he begged.

Jack sniffled as he held his son close, swallowing the lump in his throat as he continued the story.

"This is where it gets sad Sammy," he whispered.

~~~*~~~
"Jack, you can go home now!" Jack's boss called.
Jack sighed in relief as he grabbed his coat and shrugged it on and pulling out his car keys. He walked down the hallway and out to the car park as he found his car. His phone suddenly rang and Jack raised an eyebrow as he answered it.
"Hello?" he spoke.
"J-Jack, it's Austin, you need to come to the h-hospital," he sobbed.
"Why, what happened!" Jack yelled.
"Just get here!" Austin roared before hanging up.
Jack panicked as he threw his phone down and put the keys in the ignition before revving the engine. He pulled out of the car park as he sped down the road to the hospital. His mind was racing a mile a minute. Was Sammy ok? Alex? What the hell was going on!
"Please be ok, please be ok," he begged.
Jack sped into the hospital as he found a park and ran up to the front entrance, not caring if he locked the car or not. He burst through the front doors as he calm into the lobby. He ran to the desk and asked where Alex was. The nurse gave him a sympathetic look and his stomach churned.
"Just at the end of the hallway," she whispered.
Jack thanked her as he raced down the hallway and saw Billie, Mike, Tre, Austin and Sammy outside the room.
"Guys?" he questioned.
"Daddy!" Sammy cried, running towards him.
Jack picked him up in his arms as he held him close, kissing his forehead gently. He set Sam down as he looked at the others, tears staining their faces.
"What happened? Someone tell me!" he yelled.
"Jack...it's Alex, he...he's dead," Billie choked, covering his mouth with his hand.
Jack felt his heart break into pieces as he collapsed to the floor in a fit of sobs.
"No, no, no!" he cried, gripping his hair tightly.
Austin dropped down beside Jack, holding him in his arms as his best friend sobbed into his embrace.
"Jack, I'm so sorry," he whispered.
Jack let out a shaky breath as he stood up and went over to the door. The others stayed outside as Jack walked inside. The room was deathly quiet, no beeps of monitors, no nothing. He walked over to his deceased boyfriend, a peaceful look on his face.
"God dammit Alex," he gasped, dropping into the chair by his bed side.
He took Alex's hand in his, it was cold as ice. All he wanted was to feel Alex grip back, but he wouldn't. Alex was dead, he was gone.
"I'm so sorry Alex, I'm sorry," Jack whispered as he shuddered shakily.
Jack couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe the love of his life was gone. He wanted this to be a dream, but it was far too real for a dream. His chest ached as he looked at the face he woke up to everyday, kissed everyday, smiled at everyday. Jack stood up, leaning down as he planted a soft kiss on Alex's lips before pulling away.
"I love you Alex, I'll never forget you. Rest in paradise babe," he whispered, letting go of Alex's hand as he turned away.
He covered his mouth with his hand as he continued to sob, exiting the room as he was welcomed into a warm embrace by Billie.
"I can't believe he's gone," Jack whimpered, as he started to sob hysterically.
~~~*~~~

"If Daddy hadn't taken his seatbelt off, do you think he would still be here?" Sam asked, holding his small hand in his father's hand.

"I think he would be Sammy, I really do. But, wherever he is, know that he's watching over you, and he's so proud of you," Jack soothed.

Sam nodded as he looked down at the ring on his Dad's finger.

"Was that from Daddy?" he questioned.

Jack nodded as he gazed at the ring. After getting home that night of Alex's death and putting Sam to bed, Jack opened the birthday presents he wasn't going to receive from Alex anymore. One caught his eye and it was shaped like a box. He unwrapped the paper and stared at a navy blue velvet box. Jack had stared at it briefly before opening it to reveal a chunky silver ring with the words 'Will you marry me?' engraved on it.

"He wanted me to marry him and be happy with him Sammy. I wear it because I feel like I am married to him, but through his soul. His soul still lives on. I miss him so much Sammy," Jack whispered.

Sam looked into his Dad's weak and saddened eyes before hugging him tightly as Jack sobbed some more. Sam was still too young to understand some things. But he knew he wasn't going to see his Daddy anytime soon. Jack wiped the tears away as he stood up, holding Sam up against his side.

"Let's go home huh?" he asked.

Sam nodded as he looked at the grave one last time.

"I love you and miss you Daddy," he spoke.

Jack smiled softly before blowing a kiss in the direction of Alex's grave,

"I miss you. I'm so sorry," he whispered, turning away.

Jack and Sam walked down the long pathway back to the gates of the cemetery, feeling slightly fulfilled to have talked to Alex in spirit again. It was tradition on Jack's birthday to visit him, despite how every year it killed him inside.

"I miss you too Jack," a voice echoed.

Jack looked up into the sky, hearing the voice ring through his ears.

"Alex?" he whispered.

More tears fell from his eyes as he looked around, seeing nothing around him. It was just in his head. Yet nearby, stood the misty spirit of Alex, watching over his boyfriend and son as they made their way home. A smile stretched on his face before he faded into the air.

"Until we meet again, Jack, I love you,"
