I'd been avoiding Ember at all costs. Mom forced me to help her carry in her bags and I did my best to bite my tongue, but there was seriously just something about her that got under my skin. To be so small, she sure had a hell of a bite in her tone.


This was going to take a lot of getting used to, having a girl other than my mom living in the house. I didn't even want Carl here for more than a night. It wasn't that I had anything against him, I just didn't trust him. For all I know he could turn out just like my dad. Mom was crazy for jumping straight into this shit with him. I hadn't had any time to bond with him and they didn't even bother to see if Ember and I would get along well enough to live under the same roof. If they had, they probably would have stuck to casual dating. Maybe that's why they didn't want us to meet each other until it was too late.


Mom would be mad at me in long run for not giving Ember more of a chance. Surely the Elf had to understand that it was a lot to take in that I had a new sister, at the very least she could have given me some time before judging me so harshly. But that choice was hers and I wasn't about to let her win this battle. She may have been an elf, but she was no Link.


"Jack!" I groaned as my name was called from across the house. "The guys are here!"


I really don't know why she bothered to scream my name. It's not like I wanted our new house mate to invite herself to hang out and the guys knew perfectly well where my room was located. Still, I tossed some of my dirty clothes into a pile and turned on my game system, knowing we'd be having some hardcore battles tonight. I had some stress to get rid of.


"Dude, is she here?"


"Who?"


"Elf girl. Is she here? I want Rian and Zack to see her!"


"Yeah, she's here, but she already knows I don't want her to hang out with us. She's a total bitch."


"That's dramatic," Zack snickered, plopping down on my bed to grab a controller. "You've known her for what, a day?"


"A day too many."


Alex and Rian rolled their eyes, sinking into my floor as they watched Jack and I try to shoot each other for the Hell of it. We were talking about normal things - Hot girls, food, music, gigs and anything in between when a figure walked past my door. I rolled my eyes as I heard the bathroom door shut and a clatter of sorts, like she was putting away all of her beauty
products. She better not touch my hairspray.


"I'm going to talk to her," Alex whispered, poking me in the leg. "She might be a bitch but she's hot!"


"Gross."


Alex playfully smacked my leg before he stood and trotted over to the door. Zack and I paused our game so we could watch from our seats. A moment later, Ember was back in the hallway and trying to walk quickly past Alex. God knows that didn't work. He stopped her a few inches from my door and put on his best 'sexy smile,' his hand brushing her arm as he worked his charm.


"Hey Ember, I'm Jack's best friend, Alex. We met at the wedding."


"Actually, Jack and I met at the wedding."


"So you're new in town, eh?" Alex brushed off her bitterness with a smirk. "I bet you're lonely here, with no friends to hang out with. How about I show you around some time? This town can be awfully romantic."


Rian, Zack and myself nearly choked on our laughter as Alex sent her a wink. Ember looked disgusted as she shot him a glare. Poor Alex. I think that was the first time I'd ever seen him get turned down. Another thing that's going to prevent her from fitting in around here - No girl can deny Alex's charm. Who knows, it might make her popular with the jocks at school. They'll think they can get in her pants because he couldn't.


"Alex, I wouldn't go out with you if you had the last functional penis on the earth. Actually, I'd turn into a lesbian before that happened," she smiled sweetly, and for the first time since she got her, I sent her a real grin. "Thanks, though."


Defeated, Alex dragged his feet back into the bedroom. Ember remained where she was, probably to annoy me or add insult to injury for Alex, but Zack seemed to notice something that I didn't. He cleared his throat and lifted his controller off of his lap, a nervous smile on his shy face.


"Wanna tap in? My fingers are getting tired and you look like you know the game."


I sent a glare in Zack's direction. Did he not hear me clearly when I said she wasn't supposed to join us? The last thing I needed was Ember ruining my only downtime. Growling silently at Zack, I turned my attention to Ember who had a small smirk on her perfect lips. Fucking Hell, she was hot when she was out for revenge. Her arms were crossed over her small frame, making her breasts look a little bigger than they actually were. The red in her hair matched the color of her pants and her leg was cocked in such a way that I could make out the curve of her ass. Sometimes I loathed the fact that I was a teenage boy.


"Sure," Ember finally spoke, letting her arms fall to her side. I cringed as she walked into my room like she owned it, sat down on the bed between me and Zack and sent a challenging expression my way. "I hope you're prepared to die, brother dearest."


"Yeah, right," I snorted. "Be prepared to get your elf ass handed to you."


The tension in the room grew. Zack managed to hit the floor with our other friends while Ember and I were in a battle for blood. If I can't literally kill her, might as well make her look like a fool in around the guys. She would never, ever belong here. I'd make sure of it.
