Dawn’s POV
It was October 4, and Jack was going to take me out on our first date. I didn’t know what he had in store, but it didn’t matter. Knowing Jack, it would be awesome.
“Hello, beautiful,” Jack smiled after I opened my front door.
“Hello to you too, handsome.”
“So are you all set to go?”
“Absolutely.”
I actually was ready. When I do stuff, I usually just wait ‘til the last minute or just not get ready at all. This was different though. I had to make sure that I looked my best for Jack. He’s the only person in the whole school, besides Care, that actually likes me and cares for me. Sometimes I question it but then he smiles at me and I can see his feelings for me. I really like him, and I hope that nothing with get in between us.
Jack put my hand in his and walked me out of the house and to the car. He was such a gentlemen and opened the door for me. This caused me to smile and not stop even after he got in the car. He gave me one last smile before starting the car up. We drove and ended up at the park.
After he got out, he opened my door again and let me to an area with nothing around it but a small tree. In this area was a blanket and a picnic basket. We sat down on it, Jack started to take something out of the basket. It was cherry pie, my favorite.
“Thank you so much,” I grinned when he handed me a piece and a fork.
“You told me that it was your favorite, so I brought that. It’s the only food that I know you like. I didn’t want to bring sandwiches just to find out that you didn’t like them.”
“I actually don’t like most sandwiches.”
“There’s another thing that I know about you now.”
“What else would you like to know about me?”
“Um, what’s your favorite color?”
“Ah, the basics. I like black and purple.”
“I should have figured. That’s what you normally wear. What’s your favorite animal?”
“It just happens to be the same as my last name.”
“You like foxes? Usually girls will say puppies or kittens or cute bunnies.”
“Well, I’m not most girls.”
“And that’s one of the best things about you. You don’t try to be someone you're not. You’re the first real girl that I’ve dated, and I couldn’t be happier.”
“Same. I never would have thought that you would be like this. All this time, I thought that you were just like all the rest of those assholes at school.”
“But I am.”
“What do you mean?”
“I watched you suffer for years and didn’t do anything about it ‘til recently.”
“But you still did. Not even the teachers would have done what you did. Hell, they beat you up, but you still want to be with me.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” She shrugged. “Well, let’s continue with the questions. What’s your favorite word?”
“Idiotic. What’s your’s?”
Jack smirked. “Thrust.”
“No way!” I laughed.
“It is. You can ask Alex, Zack, or Rian.”
“I am so going to.”
“That reminds me. They want to meet you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. I mean, we’re all like brothers, you know?”
“I understand. Why don’t we go over and meet them tomorrow?
“I’ll tell them at school.”
“Ok.”
After we finished eating, we laid down on the blanket and just looked up at the stars. It was very peaceful and quiet until Jack started to talk again.
“Are you still, you know, carving into your arm?”
Although my mind was telling me to lie or run away from him as fast as possible, I couldn’t bring myself to do either of those things. “Yeah.”
“Why?”
“I’m not sure. I guess that it just takes a while to stop thinking about the stuff that has plagued you all your life.”
“So it’s not because I’m not enough?”
I sat up and looked down at him. “Please don’t think like that. I just need time, ok? You’re the best thing that has happened to me, and I really like you.”
“I really like you too.” I laid down again, but this time I was laying by him with my head on his chest. “Hey Dawn, what’s one thing that you’ve always wanted?”
“Well, I’ve always wanted to play an instrument. I want to be able to play songs that I like.”
“I could teach you guitar.”
“I’ve tried, but I don’t like cords. They make my hand uncomfortable.”
“I see....... I’m going to have a surprise for you tomorrow.”
“Really? What?”
“If I tell you, it won’t be a surprise.”
“True, but just to let you know, I hate surprises.”
“Too bad for you because I’m still not telling.”
“Damn.”
Silence filled the atmosphere again. My eyelids started to get heavy. I tried my best to keep them open, but I was unable to. They shut, and I fell asleep.When I opened my eyes, I was in Jack’s car, and he was driving.
“I’m sorry for falling asleep.”
“It’s ok. You're really cute when you’re asleep.”
I blushed. “Thanks. Do we have to go home though? I want to spend more time with you.”
“That was all I had planned for the night.”
“I know that we haven’t been dating all that long, but do you want to spend the night? We can make it like a sleep over. I’ll make some popcorn and get some blankets and pillows, and we can watch some movies together.”
“Are you going to make me all pretty with the help of your sister?” he laughed.
“You are going to be gorgeous when we’re done with you.”
“I’m in. I haven’t had a manicure in forever!”
When we got to my house, I dragged my sister downstairs, and the three of us set everything up. Each of us picked out a movie to watch. Care laid on the couch, while Jack and I snuggled on the floor. Although I didn’t want to, I fell asleep during the middle of the second movie. That was ok though since Jack had fallen asleep just before me. Care stayed up and walked a couple of more movies before going to sleep. I knew this because she was watching horror movies and sometimes a loud scream coming from the TV would pull me out of my sleep for a little bit. I didn’t mind though because that just gave me more time to look at Jack, and he thought I was cute when I slept.
