Chased by the Past
Complications on the big day (Alex POV, Rian POV)
Six months later.
Alex POV
Today was the big day. The day I had waited for since the second I had accepted Jack’s proposal. I had actually been clean of self-harm since then!
We had managed to pull some strings and get married back home, in Baltimore.
I was full of nervous energy and almost drove my mum insane. I was already in my tuxedo and it were two hours left. She tried to occupy me, but it worked rather badly.
I had already had 3 glasses of champagne and hence was a bit tipsy. I slouched down on the couch and got out my phone. 1 new message. I opened it, and instantly was fully sober.
“I will destroy you. Say goodbye to Jack."
It was from an unknown number. Jack. I had to protect Jack. I was still at home and he was supposed to be at church, organising the last bits and pieces.
“MUM WE NEED TO GO, WHERE IS YOUR CAR?” I shouted.
“Alex, what is it? Oh my God, you are pale as a ghost!” she asked.
“Mum, no time to explain, get in the car!” I said, grabbing her arm and the car keys. “Drive to church please! I need to save Jack!” I hadn’t noticed, but I was crying.
“Alex, honey, please tell me what is happening! What is it with Jack?” – “I don’t know Mum, I just know I need to protect him!”
The drive to church was short, but it seemed to drag out forever. When we finally arrived there, I jumped out of the car and ran to the church, not caring about some tourists I ran into. I stumbled into church, and gasped as I saw Jack.
Rian POV
It was the wedding day. My heart was still broken, but with Zack’s help I had managed to heal it at least a tiny bit over the past six months. He was incredibly caring, always doing what I wanted, and when I started to dissociate, he would bring me somewhere safe from people. I took medications to help it, but sometimes it came up.
He was basically living with me at that point, always there to help me. But the day before the wedding, he had gone to his place to get his tuxedo and so I was alone. In the morning, I could feel the feeling I got before I dissociated. I wanted to call Zack, but my other identity took over before I was able to make the call.
Alex POV
Jack was sat on top of Rian, holding him down with one hand, dialling a number on his phone with the other. Rian appeared to be unconscious.
“Hello, 911? A friend of mine attacked me, but I managed to contain him. He is suffering from DID and he dissociated. Medication? No, I don’t know which one he takes. We are at Southbay church here in Baltimore. No one injured. Yes okay, thank you.”
He noticed me and smiled weakly. “You know it is bad luck to see the bride before the wedding?”
“Jack, are you kidding me, you were just attacked, Rian is unconscious, and you are telling me it is bad luck to see the ‘bride’ before the wedding? Besides the fact I am not the ‘bride’ here, have you gone insane?!” I said, and then burst into tears.
“Alex, don’t worry, Rian tried to attack me, yes, but I managed to overpower him as you see, I am not hurt and Zack, an ambulance and the cops are on their way. Even if it is an unwelcome disturbance of our perfect day, everything else should work fine. I am sorry I can’t come over to cuddle you, but I don’t want to risk him getting up and trying again..”
He worked his miraculous smile on me to make me do whatever he wanted, it was so annoying when he did that. But it also made me happy and so I stayed quiet.
As soon as the police and the ambulance arrived, Jack and I were questioned by cops while Rian was wheeled off. Zack had also arrived, he was at Rian’s side the whole time.
It was one hour left. Jack and I looked at each other, and he told me he would go to the bridesmaid’s room and winked at me. I got it instantly and followed him.
