Memories That Fade Like Photographs.
Grinning Like a Fool
Flashback
Alex’s Perspective
I was listening to my iPod when my phone went off. I saw August's name on the screen.
"Hey Gus!" I chirped happily. She sniffed.
"A-A-Alex, c-can I c-come over p-p-please!" she sobbed.
"Oh my God, August! You're crying! What happened?" I asked, concerned.
"I'll tell you when I get there." she sobbed.
"No, I'm coming to get you." I said determinedly.
"Okay." she whispered weakly.
"Be there in five." I promised and she hung up. I grabbed my black hoodie and a white baseball hat and put them on. I sprinted out the door.
"Alex, where are you going?" my mom asked.
"To pick August up and bring her here." I replied.
"It's pouring down rain! You KNOW how easily you get sick!" she cried.
"I'll be fine. She needs me right now." I told her and left.
I ran as fast as my skinny long legs could carry me. I scooped a still-sobbing August up into my arms and carried her back. I put her on my bed and lay next to her. I ran my fingers through her long dark curly hair.
"What's up, Martian?" I asked. She smiled weakly at one of the many nicknames Jack and I had given her.
"You promise you won't try to kill anyone over this?" she hedged.
"Scout's honor." I smiled and linked my pinky with hers and squeezed it.
"Okay. I broke up with Josh." she told me.
"Why?" I asked.
"I'm getting to that part! He only wanted me for sex." she whispered. I gaped.
"So what happened?" I growled.
"H-he invited me to a party tonight a-and I went, a-and I couldn't find him and I looked everywhere a-and f-finally I f-found him in a closet w-with s-some whore." she whispered. I took off my shoe and threw it at the wall out of frustration.
"Stop!" August cried, hugging me around my middle.
"You're right, I'm sorry." I whispered lowly. I got up to leave.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"To get some ice cream. You're going to eat it and we are going to watch all your favorite movies." I replied. She hopped up into my arms. "I take it you're going with me?" I laughed. She nodded and we went downstairs. "Hey, Mom? We're going to get some ice cream and movies." I called.
"Be careful!" she called.
"We will." I promised. We hopped in my silver Audi and set off for 7-11.
"You wouldn't mind getting some tequila, would you?" I asked.
"Not for me." she mumbled.
"Always the good girl." I smirked.
We got some Ben & Jerry's and all her favorite movies. And some tequila, which we would hide from my mother. We watched movies, she ate, I drank, and she fell asleep.
When I woke up, I had my arms around her and her face was tucked in the crook of my neck. I carefully slipped out of bed, taking my shirt off. I stretched.
"Hmmm?" August said, waking up.
"Shit." I swore to myself. "How are you?" I asked.
"Fine, A little down, but I'm okay." she said.
"Good." I replied.
