I'll See You In My Dreams

Chapter 14

"I don't see why you made me bring my big jacket, Alex. We just went from school to your place then gonna go back to mine." Jack said as we walked into my home after school this freezing cold Friday.

"That's what you think." I replied as I heard a tiny meow coming from down the hall meaning Justin had heard us walk in.

"You're not gonna like make me walk home are you?" Jack asked, his eyebrows bunching together cutely.

"No baby, no," I laughed, "I'm taking you somewhere tonight."

Jack stopped in his tracks as he almost ran into the coffee table, "Where?"

I laughed as I walked over to him and pulled him onto my lap as we fell onto the couch, Justin soon attaching his claws to my jeans and crawling up then expertly. Cat got game.

"Well," I started as I kissed up the side of Jack's cool neck, "There is a little Christmas fair going on downtown and I thought i'd take you. I've been meaning to go and what's better than going with someone like you?"

Jack snorted as he shoved himself off of my lap and curled up on the couch next to a pillow, "But it's Friday, isn't there going to be a lot of people?"

"Nah, it's that super old one. Nobody ever goes to it. They all go to the new one up in town." I said with a smile as Justin crawled his way to Jack.

"Only if you promise to buy me hot chocolate." Jack said with a raised eyebrow. I couldn't help but laugh as I leaned over to kiss him lightly on the lips.

"Anything for you."

"Alex it's cold!" Jack shrieked as I led him out of my truck.

I had checked the temperature on my phone before we left the house and it was about 35 degrees outside so, yeah, it was cold.

I pulled Jack into my chest and ran my hands up and down his arms and back roughly to attempt to warm him up at least until we got under the bright Christmas lights that would offer some sort of artificial heat.

I held onto his hand as I led him up the dirt path until we walked under a large wreath that was wrapped in bright blue, green, and red lights. The whole pathway was surrounded in Christmas trees that were decorated nicely to match everything else around it.

"What does it look like?" Jack asked softly as I kissed his palm.

"Gorgeous, Jack. It's super bright and colorful. So much glitter and Christmas trees. There's also a few fake deer around. Maybe there are some live ones?" I joked at the last part successfully earning a small laugh from Jack.

I studied how the bright white light shined onto his bright red cheeks from the cold, his lips heavily chapped and his bangs blowing all around from the wind. His expressions weren't honestly happy cause he couldn't see his surroundings yet there was a glimmer of hope, like he was still happy.

"C'mon," I started, "I think I should get you that hot chocolate I promised you."

Jack smiled and nodded, standing up and grabbing my hand so I could lead him to the concession stand a few feet away.

Even after Jack insisted a small would be okay, I ordered two large hot chocolates for the both of us. I led Jack to a small bench where I could watch little kids run around and play in the artificial snow, giggling and laughing enjoying their childhood. It almost seemed selfish that I wanted to sit and watch my surroundings but that also meant that I could watch Jack.

"What's that smell?" Jack asked as he breathed in a few times loudly.

My eyebrows furrowed together as I did the same. I just smelled outdoors.

"C'mon." Jack said as he stood up and dragged me down the dirt path. We stopped in front of a large bundle of Christmas trees decorated by candy canes and pop corn.

"This, what is this?" Jack asked as he smelled it again, his hand cautious to reach out and touch it.

"Touch it, Jack. It's just a Christmas tree with some candy canes and pop corn on it." I laughed as Jack smiled and buried his nose into the prickly branches.

"Tickles!" He giggled as his hands abused the branches. People who were walking by shot us weird looks. One person actually sent me a questioning look so I just motioned to him and then my eyes. She seemed to get what I was trying to say and smiled before walking away to catch up with her group.

"Y'all can take some if you want." A voice said from behind me. I turned around and saw Neil dressed in black slacks, a deep red dress shirt, a dark green apron and a pair of elf ears on his head.

"Neil, what're you doing here?" I ask as I walk a few steps away from Jack.

"I work here on Fridays and weekends. It's nice." He said with a smile, leaning his head to the side to look at Jack, "But seriously, just take some candy canes. I have to put some more up."

I smiled in thanks and walked back to Jack who was still stroking the branches trying to memorize each and every one. I pulled off a few candy canes and broke one in half, placing one half in my hot chocolate and one in Jack's.

"Hey, that's enough. You're gonna get tree burn or something on your hands." I giggled as I pulled Jack away from the tree by his waist and led the way down more of the path.

Nearing the end, I saw a tall red throne and little elves surrounding it. My lips twitched up in a smile as I remembered being a little kid and going to see Santa and tell him about all the action figures and a baseball I wanted.

"Hey let's go see Santa." I blurted, catching Jack's shocked expression at the corner of my eye.

"S-Santa?" He choked.

"Yeah? Have you never asked Santa what you wanted for Christmas?" I asked with a confused look on my face.

Jack just barely shook his head no making me grab our cups and throw them in the nearest trash can and pull him up the hill to see the Saint Nick.

"Hey guys! Are you hear to see Santa?" A deep voice said, trying to sound cheery but failed.

"Yes, actually. Jack you wanna go first?" I asked with a smile. Jack gulped and shrugged making the small elf pull him up the rest of the hill to sit on the fat mans lap.

"And what would you like for Christmas?" Santa asked, deep husky voice carrying it's way down the hill.

Jack bit his lip before leaning in and cupping his mouth over Santa's ear, whispering. I pouted as I couldn't hear what he was saying but by judging from the chuckle and hug coming from Santa to Jack it must have been nice.

Jack smiled as the same elf assisted him off of his lap and pulled him back down to me, "Your turn, Lex."

I sighed dramatically and climbed up the hill and sat uncomfortably on the mans lap, him repeating the same action from before, "What would you like for Christmas, young man?"

I smiled as I copied what Jack did and leaned forward to cup my hand over my mouth and whispered fourteen simple words that yet are difficult to come by, but Santa's magic, remember? He can do anything.

"All I want for Christmas is for Jack to be able to see again."
