Over the next couple weeks, I began going over to Jack’s house a lot more, and I didn’t have to use the excuse of studying for once. He was my boyfriend now, so of course I was gonna spend a lot of time with him. Luckily, his family welcomed me into their home with open arms. I hadn’t even tried to spend the night at his house since we got together. I figured his parents would frown upon that sort of thing, though I hadn’t bothered to ask.
Jack and I were sitting on his living room floor, shouting profanities at each other as we played Mario Kart. Jack’s mom wandered into the room, sitting on the couch behind us. “Jack, could you please turn off the game?” she asked with a sigh.
He jumped at the chance, seeing as how I was kicking his ass at it. The two of us turned around to face her, sitting cross-legged and looking up at her. I felt like a child. “What’s up?” Jack wondered.
“The three of us need to have a serious discussion,” she mentioned.
I swallowed nervously. “Okay. Go ahead.”
“Listen, Nora, you know we all love having you over, and we’re so happy you two finally got together, but...” she began. “Bassam and I feel we need to set some ground rules.”
“Mom, what are you getting at?” Jack cut in.
She sighed again. “It’s fine if you two decide to have sex. We can’t stop you from that, especially with all the hormones and whatnot. But, it you do, it has to be while no one is here, because we frankly don’t want to hear that, and you have to use some sort of protection.”
“No wonder Dad gave me those condoms last night...” Jack mumbled, his face turning a bright shade of pink.
I suppressed a giggle. “Mrs. Barakat, if it helps, my mom did put me on birth control.” I neglected to mention that it was against my will.
“Yes, that helps a lot actually,” she said, looking incredibly relieved. “Anyway, the reason I bring this up now is because I have to go run some errands, and I’ll be gone for probably 2 hours. A lot can happen in 2 hours, after all.”
“Go ahead and go. I doubt anything will be happening at this point,” I mentioned.
She stood up from the couch. “Well, if I don’t ask, I can’t be told of anything.”
She went to the kitchen and grabbed her purse and car keys while Jack started up the game again. I was impressed by how calm and collected she was throughout the whole thing, knowing my own mother would’ve probably ended up screaming at me. I heard the front door shut with a light click, and I immediately turned to Jack.
“When are we gonna have sex?” I asked suddenly. I had been thinking it, but I didn’t mean to say it out loud.
Jack’s eyes widened. “Shit, I dunno. Definitely not after that awkward talk.”
I laughed. “I can agree with that. I just....have you thought about it?”
“Let’s see, I’m only a constantly horny teenage boy with a gorgeous girlfriend,” he joked. “Of course I’ve thought about it. Have you?”
“I told you about the dream I had, so duh. I’ve even had more since then,” I commented.
Another blush coated his cheeks. “At least we both want it. But, we’ve only been dating a few weeks. I don’t want to screw anything up.”
I nodded, understanding. “I didn’t mean now, or even anytime soon. I was just wondering when.”
“Honestly, I have no idea. But when we do, it’s going to be...nice. At least I hope,” he stated.
I grinned at him. “I’m sure it will be.”
We went back to playing, but I couldn’t concentrate on the game with my thoughts running wild. Jack seemed to notice this once he started to win races, so he paused the game, sighing.
“Okay, what’s going on in that head of yours now?” He asked, setting his game controller down.
I bit my lip. “Well, I think I have an idea.”
He looked just as nervous as I felt. “Okay. Shoot.”
“I was just thinking...” I began, focusing my attention on the floor. “I’ve seen you naked...don’t you think it’s about time you’ve seen me?”
“I-I, uh, I’m not sure what you’re, uh, trying to g-get at,” he stammered.
I stood up, offering him a hand, which he took. “No sex, we already decided that, but how about a shower? You know, taking baby steps?”
“People can still have sex in a shower, Nora,” he mentioned with a nervous gulp.
“Yes, but people can also have self control,” I pointed out. “Anyway, we don’t have to. We can go back to playing Mario Kart, or even watch a movie to-”
“I’m tired of movies and video games. Let’s go,” he decided, grabbing me by the hand and dragging me upstairs.
He shut the bathroom door behind us, locking it as I stood there awkwardly. We stared at each other for a moment, neither of us knowing what to say. “You go first,” I commented.
“Nora, you’ve already seen me naked,” he pointed out.
“Then is shouldn’t be hard for you,” I mentioned. “I’m going to turn around, but tell me when you’re ready. Then it’ll be my turn.”
I turned to face the wall, biting at my fingernails nervously. I didn’t regret this decision, but that didn’t make it any easier. After all, this was farther than Drake and I had ever gone in almost a year of dating. Of course, Jack and I had done a lot of things Drake and I never did...making out in a closet being one of them. Besides, I wanted to do this with Jack, and I could certainly trust him more than Drake.
I heard the rustling of fabric and a belt hit the floor. “Okay. I’m ready,” Jack said, a nervous tone to his voice.
I turned around, and my eyes traveled up and down, surveying my boyfriend. He was so skinny, but still adorable and frankly...sexy. “Okay, you turn around now.”
I let out a shaky breath before pulling my shirt over my head and letting it pool on the floor. I worked slowly, feeling slightly self conscious, but soon all of my clothes were off. “Ready,” I choked out.
Jack turned around, but I kept my gaze at the floor, my face warm and a deep shade of red. I could feel his eyes ghosting over me as he stepped toward me. He tilted my chin up with his finger, making me look into those big brown eyes of his. “You’re beautiful,” he said, leaning down to kiss me.
It was a soft kiss, but it was a long one that practically knocked the air out of me as we pulled away. “Shower,” I mentioned.
“Right,” he said with a sigh, reaching to turn it on. He grabbed my hand and we stepped inside, warm water splashing off his head and onto my face, making me gasp. He laughed at me.
“It’s not funny,” I pouted, wiping water away from my eyes.
“C’mon. You’re adorable,” he giggled.
“Your girlfriend is standing completely naked in front of you, and the word you use is adorable?” I joked.
Hesitantly, he placed his hands on my hips and pulled me closer to him. “Well, I’ve already called you beautiful and gorgeous, and it’s a given that I think you’re sexy.”
I laughed, leaning up to kiss him, and we didn’t stop until the water became cold and our skin was wrinkled. Jack had my hand as we stepped out, grabbing a towel off of the rack and handing it to me. We dried off as much as we possibly could before getting dressed back into our clothing.
“Do you think your mom will notice?” I wondered.
“If she does, she probably won’t point it out,” he shrugged.
We went back downstairs and began playing Mario Kart again as if nothing happened. “You know, I think I actually had a good idea.”
Jack grinned. “Are you kidding? That was great! Nothing better than making out with a pretty girl in the shower.”
I rolled my eyes playfully. “You’re a dork.”
“And yet, you’re still here,” he commented.
This is what was nice about being with Jack. We could be completely honest with each other and move past any awkwardness to be comfortable with each other again. Still, I think the baby steps were necessary. We couldn’t screw up all the good we had.
