Chapter 23: First Date

“Nora, I need you to be looking like your beautiful self by 7,” Jack greeted when I answered the phone.
“I appreciate the compliment but what exactly am I supposed to be preparing for?” I asked, cradling my phone between my ear and my shoulder as I attempted to multitask.
“Well, I realized a few minutes ago that I asked you to be my girlfriend, but I haven’t taken you on a proper date...so that’s what it is. Our first date,” he explained.
“And where are you taking me on this first date?” I questioned, smiling.
“Um...I haven’t gotten that far yet....so I should probably go figure that out,” he mentioned. I heard rustling in the background and various other noises. “But I’ll be there at 7! Oh, and bring a helmet!”
“Wait, what?” I wondered. Jack had already hung up, to my dismay. I sighed, glancing at the clock. 2:30. I still had a while, but I decided to begin getting ready. I hopped in the shower, quickly washing my hair. I dried my hair and straightened it before returning to my room, gazing into my closet and trying to figure out what to wear.
I hadn’t really thought much about the fact that with Jack over the past few days, but it seemed to finally hit me. Jack was my boyfriend, and we were going on our first date tonight. Butterflies attacked me once again, and I suddenly felt like I was going to throw up. I needed advice, or least someone to rant to.
“Hey! What’s going on?” Luna answered her phone.
“I’m freaking out. Jack and I are going on our first date tonight and I’m starting to panic,” I explained, picking at my fingernails.
She squealed. “Where’s he taking you?!”
“I dunno. He just said to be looking like my beautiful self by 7,” I replied.
“Awww,” she commented. “That’s really sweet.”
“Luna, I’m fucking dying. This is like, the first real date I’ve ever been on. Drake doesn’t count,” I mentioned.
“Of course he doesn’t. Anyway, don’t worry about Jack. You two like each other and are finally doing something about it, and that’s the important part. Whatever you end up doing, you’ll have a great time together,” she pointed out.
I let out a breath I didn’t know I had been holding. “Thank God I have you! I’ll call you afterward, okay?”
“I was hoping you would. Have fun, and don’t forget to use protection, you crazy kids!” she giggled.
I hung up the phone and went back to my closet. If I was just supposed to be myself, why wasn’t this any easier? I sighed, quickly grabbing a black sweater and a pair of jeans off of their hangers. I got dressed and I was left with a good three hours to kill, so I read book, trying to calm my nerves.
I heard the doorbell ring, so in a hurry, I checked myself in the mirror and grabbed my bike helmet before rushing down the hallway. I flung the door open to find the lanky boy slightly out of breath.
“Hey,” he said, grinning. “Are you ready?”
I nodded, shouting a goodbye to my aunt before heading out the door. “Why did I have to bring the helmet?”
“Well, since I can’t drive, and where I’m taking you is too far to walk...this was really our only mode of transportation.” He gestured to his bicycle, which was laying on the sidewalk in front of my house. “You’ll have to ride on the back bars...and I didn’t have a helmet, and I wouldn’t want my girlfriend to get a concussion or anything.”
“You’re cute,” I kissed him on the cheek before putting my helmet on my head and buckling it. “Now, where are we going?”
“After spending an hour trying to figure something out, I decided to go the simple route and just take you to a movie,” he replied.
I smiled. “Sounds good to me.”
He got on his bike and I climbed onto the bars in the back, wrapping my arms around his torso to keep steady. We took off down the street, at least how fast Jack’s peddling could take us, talking like we were still just friends. I suppose we were, just a more serious version.
We got to the movie theater and Jack locked up his bike, offering me his arm with a cheeky grin. I gladly took it and we went inside. I offered to pay for tickets or popcorn or something, but he refused. “I’m your boyfriend, goddammit,” he had said. “Let me do my job.”
We grabbed a couple seats in the movie theater, throwing popcorn back and forth while the previews played. Once it officially started, Jack yawned and stretched, placing his arm around me. I laughed, but cuddled a little closer to him. I was glad that getting together hadn’t been awkward, but it was nice that we had seemingly come closer. Plus, the kissing, hand holding, and hugs were really nice.
After a couple hours of laughing and sneaking kisses, we emerged from the theater hand in hand, Jack raving about the cool parts in the movie. “Jack! Nora!” Someone called from behind.
Jack and I exchanged a look of conclusion, but we turned around anyway to find the last people I thought would talk to us: Emmett and Kasey. I faked a smile, at least toward Kasey. “Hey guys! Long time no see!”
Emmett seemed genuinely happy to see me. “I see you two are doing well. How long have you two been together?”
“Not quite a week yet. What about you guys?” I wondered, scratching at the back of my neck nervously.
“It’s our 1 month anniversary today,” Kasey beamed, grinning at Emmett. There was something about her that had seemed to...improve since I had last seen her. Maybe Emmett had made her into a better person.
“Congrats guys,” Jack cut in. I glanced at him to find he was just as uncomfortable as I was, which I was thankful for.
“Well, I gotta get her home,” Emmett said after a brief pause. “Message me when you can, Nora. I feel like there’s a lot we need to catch up on.”
I felt Jack’s grip on my hand tighten. “I’ll see what I can do.”
We walked out of the theater, got back on Jack’s bike, and he took me home. It was a much quieter ride, which worried me. Had seeing Kasey stirred something up? When we finally stopped at my house, I was surprised to find that Jack was the first to speak.
“Nora, do you still have feelings for Emmett? I mean I get it if you do, I just am really hoping you don’t because that would really suck from my point of view and-” he began.
I kissed him to shut him up, having to stand on the tip of my toes to reach him. “You’re an idiot, but at least you’re mine. I don’t have any feelings left for Emmett...turns out they all went to you.”
He smiled, clearly relieved. “How did I get so lucky?”
“I ask myself the same question a lot,” I grinned back, but it faded a little once a thought crossed my mind. “What about Kasey? Do you still like her?”
“Of course not, you crazy girl. Why would I like some stupid bitch when I’ve got such a wonderful girl standing right in front of me?” He mentioned.
I couldn’t help but smile at that. “Call me when you get home so I know you didn’t get hit by a truck or something, okay?”
“Deal. See you later.” He kissed me once before heading off on his bike.
I went inside my house, dancing on cloud nine. It had easily been the best first date I had ever had despite the interruption by Kasey and Emmett. I looked forward to many more like it. After all, Jack and I were only just beginning.
