A Life of the Plain and the Simple

Twenty-One

I am still in blissful shock that I married the girl of my dreams. I'm still coming to terms that Aubree is now my wife. On top of that, we're going to have a little boy in a few short months. I was so excited to welcome a new life into our huge family. I kind of hoped for a son, I wanted a son first so he could help me keep any daughters Aubree and I have in the future safe from boys that would break their hearts.

I woke up to a sight loved more than anything. Aubree was curled up against me, laying on her side with back pressed against my chest. My hand rested on her still growing baby bump, my son's kicking had long since stilled once his mother fell asleep. With this sight to start my morning, I felt so much happiness, I could not describe it.

I rose from our bed and I quietly got myself something to wear for the day before hopping into the shower. I got out and dried myself off before getting dressed. I went to check on Aubree to find she was still sound asleep. I smiled to myself and left her to sleep a little longer, making my way downstairs to cook her breakfast to fuel our busy day.

Stella, even though she's pregnant with twins of her own, had offered to host our baby shower at her house. To repay her, Aubree and I also decided to turn the baby shower into a joint effort, making it a Gaskarth and Barakat baby shower since Stella and Jack were right behind us with their twins. I turns out I was still the only Gaskarth twin to have a son; Stell and Jack were expecting twin girls this time around. Poor Jack will have his hands full with a house full of girls.

"Tom," I turned away from the stove and I saw Aubree standing in the doorway to the kitchen, rubbing her lower back.

"Hey, did I wake you babe," I asked as I closed the distance between us and pulled her into my arms and kissed her lovingly.

"No, I had to wake up because Xander and I are hungry," she replied.

"Well you have great timing," I told her as I led her to the table to sit, "I just finished making us breakfast."
"How rough is the first night," I asked Jack, Uncle Jack, and Dad while we sat out on Jack's front porch. Stella and Aubree were in the house with all the ladies having the shower while our dads pulled us away to have male bonding time.

"It's not too bad," Uncle Jack replied, "You just have to be prepared to be woken up every couple hours."

"Be happy you aren't having twins," my dad added, "You would have two babies waking up at the same time. You and Stella did it. What was nice about raising you two was that you guys would need something at around the same time."

"I have practice with Izzy when it comes to waking up in the middle of the night," Jack added, "Stella and I took turns with her, it was rough for us to get used to waking up at odd hours in the night. But I bet little Xander will be easy for you guys."

"I hope so too," I replied, "How's Stella been doing?"

"She's been having a lot of stress on her," Jack replied, "She's going to start bed rest tomorrow for the safety of her and the twins. We're both scared of what could happen, but I know that Stella's going to do just fine when we have the girls."

"Daddy," Izzy came to join us on the porch.

"What's up Izzy," Jack asked.

"Mommy and Auntie Aubree are about to open the presents," she told Jack, "Mommy wants you in the house to help out. Same with you Uncle Tommy."

"Okay, we'll go inside then," I picked up my niece and carried her inside.

"Uncle Tommy," Izzy held on to my shoulders as I walked into the house with Jack and our dads.

"What's up Izzy," I asked her.

"I no like seeing Mommy scared," Izzy looked scared herself. Isabelle was scared just like Stella and it broke my heart to see my niece like this.

"Nothing's going to happen your mommy, Izzy. Grandpa Jack, Grandpa Alex, your daddy, and I are going to make sure your mommy isn't taken away from you," I told her before kissing her cheek.

"Promise," she held up her little pinky to me.

"Promise," I linked my pinky with my niece's.
