Leap of Faith

Misery Business

Move. Move. For the love of God, please move, Alex thought with a scowl on his face as he trudged through the halls. The single most annoying thing in his whole universe was people walking too slowly in front of him. He only had three minutes to move from one side of the school to the other, when it was a four minute trip. And the large, lumbering giant who didn't appear to know how to use his own two feet correctly.

He turned the corner and picked up his pace significantly, bumping a few shoulders on his way down the hallway. Miscalculating his distance from the taller boy ahead, he accidentally slammed his shoulder right against him. Frowning, Alex stopped and turned to say he was sorry, but froze up. The boy standing in front of him was tall, a bit lanky, and had the best skunk hair he'd ever seen. Instead of forming words, his mouth tripped over itself and he couldn't make anything intelligible spill out from his lips. After a few seconds (which felt like eternity to Alex), he muttered a soft "Sorry" and scuttled off to his next class.

With a huff, Alex plopped into his desk in the back of the Chem room a whole minute and a half after the bell rang. No one payed him any attention, though. He was virtually invisible to the student body of his high school (population 1600 and growing). Most of the time he preferred it, though.

What the hell was that in the hallway? He didn't usually freeze up like that. Sure, he wasn't the best at talking to people, but he wasn't ever that stupid. Maybe it was because he was staring face to face with the most beautiful boy in the whole school? It could have possibly been the reason. Alex just didn't get that worked up over guys though. He didn't care enough. Something about this boy, though, made him care.

He was pretty sure his name was Jack. He'd never spoken to him before, but he was undoubtedly the most known person in the entire school, right above his girlfriend Kendall. Ever since middle school, people knew him, and people loved him. Before today Alex hadn't given two shits. He didn't now, really, but he also never noticed how totally ohmygod, he's so perfect gorgeous he was. Whatever. It didn't matter. Alex didn't have enough willpower to care about anything, let alone a boy that was taken and everyone was pining after.

When the forty-five minute block was over Alex grabbed the notebook he hadn't even bothered to open and take notes on, slung his backpack over his shoulder, and left. School was finally over, thank god. He stopped by his locker just in time to toss his backpack inside and grab his keys. With a sigh, he pushed through the front doors of the school and thought about his blissful evening of sleeping, eating, and then sleeping again. He didn't have anything else to do.

Alex hadn't taken an interest in anything for a long time. He used to love singing and playing guitar and writing songs and poetry and watching movies and playing video games, but now the only thing that sounded halfway appealing to the teenager was sleep. Sleeping after school, sleeping at night, sleeping all weekend. Just sleeping. His parents didn't really care enough to push him enough to do otherwise. He didn't have any friends to do that, either. He was a lonely person who had no motivation. He knew he should probably care that he was a fucked up antisocial, but he didn't see reason to.

After the five minute drive home he walked right to his room, shut the curtains, peeled off his pants, crawled under the blanket, and passed out.
