Fly Away With Me

Chapter 6

“…and this is where we decided to set up camp,” Alex said as he and Margo walked up to everyone. There were cheers and happy greetings once they saw her. It already seemed livelier than it previously, especially cause everyone was finally there.
After the heys and hellos, Rian started, “So everything okay with-”
“So when we heading over to that party?” Alex didn’t hesitate to interrupt and hoped that they would take the hint. With only a few looks of confusion, they shook it off moving along with the conversation. They fthey igured they could get going whenever, so the crew packed up some of the things up hiding it out of the way. When there’s a party, there’s bound to be people wandering around without a clue.
“Eighth, right?” Jack asked.
“Yah, Bri—” Alex paused before continuing, “somewhere on eighth and Hammilton.” He didn’t know why he didn’t want to bring up Bristol. It was just something he wanted to keep to himself at the moment. It just was just a run in so it was really no big deal, so there was no real need to bring it up.
“Down here for one day, and you already made friends with the whole city.” Margo skipped up next to Alex and Jack.
“He’s just such a charmer,” Jacked cooed.
“I do have that prince charming like persona,” Alex admitted eventually laughing with them. It was already dark out as if it was 10:00 rather than 7:30 with temperatures dropping each minute. They didn’t want to wear too many layers since they were going to a party, but it slipped Margo’s mind that a jacket would have been a good idea at this point. She tried to hide her chatters and goose bumps, but that wasn’t the easiest thing when you could literally see your breath.
“Oh yes, for sure,” Margo kept her tone sarcastic as they continued to walk. They didn’t have far to go, and when they reached seventh and Hammilton, they could see the house. It wasn’t hard to miss. There weren’t as many cars as expected since people could, but there were people outside and faint sound of music was rushing down the block.
Alex looked over at her, “You cold?” He knew that she was. The goose bumps along her arms and shiver that hid under each breath was something not even Margo could hide.
“I’m good,” she replied. Alex left it at that. They were now walking up the lawn of the house. The decorations, Alex could tell, probably looked nice until tonight. Dark purple streamers were hung halfway across the house now hanging to the ground. The party seemed as if it still needs time to grow with people still arriving.
Alex knocked on the door seeing Bristol. Long hair now in a curly messy bun plopped on her head and sparkled with glitter. Alex’s best guess that she was dressed up as Tinkerbell. The knot in his stomach grew with each thought about her looking as cute as she did.
“Alex! Hi!” she smiled. Her graze went from Alex to the crowd still with the same perky expression, “These your friends?” Alex nodded. “Well, I’m Bristol, you guys can just make yourself at home. Hopefully things get a little more lively in a bit.”
Bristol led them inside, and it seemed as if people were multiplying by the second. Girls in miniskirts and nurse costumes and guys with body paint and hats became the sole sight every time you turned your head. Alex slid through people eventually making his way to the kitchen. He filled his cup up wondering where everyone was. After minutes, they were all scattered around out of sight.
It was a big party now, and Alex wanted to find somewhere away from all the hectic people. He was down in the basement which in a way was a little calmer than the main floor, but not by much. The couches were taken by people trying to keep their minds together even though it was easier just to let the alcohol take charge. They were talking and laughing about something that not even they could most likely understand. Alex smirked when he saw from across the room Zack smiling with a brunette girl with bumblebee antennas on her head.
“Go get em’, bud,” Alex mumbled to himself taking the stairs to the main floor then to the second. He knew that the top floor was where people to went to get their privacy, but some rooms seemed to be invested with crowds of oblivious people. He didn’t know why, but he didn’t feel up to drinking to the point where everything he did would end up as a blur in the morning. He didn’t feel like joining them in their crazy stunts—not to tonight anyway.
Alex walked into one of the rooms seeing people hiccup and stutter spitting out sentences. There was a window open and people seemed to be hopping in and out sitting out on the roof. Walking over, Alex peeked out the window seeing Margo sitting on the roof with her knees curled up to her chest and her head back looking up. He crouched down and out of the window sitting down next to her.
“You okay? Have you been crying?” Alex asked when she turned her head to look at him. Blue eyes were glassy and puffy, but she still tried to deny it. It was no hope when Alex said: “Marg, talk to me.”
“We had a little fight,” She said blankly. “I know it doesn’t sound big, but we don’t normally fight. Like at all. And it was weird and I didn’t think he would get so upset the way he did; plus it was my fault. I thought that we would just shrug it off, and for a second, I thought we did, but when he didn’t show up, I figured it was to get back at me for I guess starting the whole thing. Last night, I mentioned coming down. And he responded, “wait, you were thinking of going with them instead of being with me?” and he seemed pretty offended. I don’t know why, though. I just brought up the fact that you guys asked me to go and I thought it would be fun. Maybe he was even hurt or thought that the thought of me going with you would start a trend. I don’t know, but I felt bad. Maybe he just wanted to-”
“Don’t tell me you’re blaming yourself for this,” Alex said. She just shrugged her shoulders and shook her head.
“Well, a little. I mean, after he said that I said: “What if I did?” I don’t know why I said that, but I did. I wasn’t sure what I was trying to get at, but he said, “I’d be upset, because my girlfriend would be ditching me when I spent awhile putting these plans together”. The way he said it just made me a little upset. I told him, “but c’mon, imagine sneaking out onto the beach in October. And I wouldn’t want to ditch you.” He continued with “What’s so great about being freezing and sandy? Babe, you’d obviously rather be with them than me.” He put me on the spot as if I had to choose between you and him. I said that wasn’t true, which made him even more upset thinking that I was lying. Causing things to escalate to the point of serious tones and furious glares before him walking one way and me the other. This morning at the game he kissed me and said that we should drop whatever happened last night and to meet him by the bleachers after the game. I was happy that we were able to get over it like that, but I guess he wasn’t over it.”
Alex saw that she was trying not to get herself so worked up over it. He didn’t blame her if she did, though. From what he heard, Jonathon felt disbelief, wonder, and some betrayal. For a while, he could have believed that Margo didn’t have a life out of him.
“You have a life outside of him,” was all Alex was able to squeeze out before she let out a frustrated “I know, and he doesn’t realize that!”
Alex opened his mouth to say something, but he stopped when hearing the familiar chatter of a young girl’s teeth. “I’ll be right back, okay? We can get out of here if you want?” He said. She just nodded her head giving him a half smile and mouthing “thank you”.
Alex walked back to wear they all hid their jackets in the last bedroom to the left eventually finding his. When pushing his way back out, he and a familiar set of brown eyes locked. The fairy made her way over noticing the jacket in his hand.
“Leaving so soon?” Bristol asked almost a shout. She still had a train of thought not being too overpowered by alcohol, but she lightly swayed trying to keep balance.
“Uh, yeah, I’m sorry,” Alex answered. For a moment he didn’t know what to say simply because he was too busy trying not to do something totally embarrassing.
“Bummer. Well, we should hang out sometime. Maybe a diner date if I’m not feeling too bad?” Bristol asked. Alex couldn’t help but to accept. It wouldn’t have been easy to reject her mostly since he didn’t want to. She put her number in his phone and said she would talk to him later before letting him loose.
When he returned, Margo was still sitting in the same spot as before. He bent down behind her sliding his jacket over her shoulders. She jumped a little before seeing who it was. Alex pointed his head back to the direction of the house. They stood up and Alex led the way out with Margo holding his hand.
