Fly Away With Me

Chapter 5

The small girl swore under her breath as she slid onto the ground. Alex just got off the phone with Margo, who he was getting ready to pick up. He was more than happy that she was coming down and ready to see her.
After hanging up, a petite girl slipped not seeing the wet floor sign that sat in front of the booth Alex was sitting in. The girl’s food flew out of her hand and onto the floor surrounding her while Alex got up to help her.
“I can’t believe I didn’t see that stupid sign,” the little blonde said laughing at herself. He knelt down next to her before helping her to her feet letting out a light laugh to her remark.
“You okay?” he asked her. She kept a cheery smile on her face while looking up at him.
“Fine, thank you.” She giggled, “How did I not see a bright yellow sign sitting on the floor?”
“Dunno, but it’s fine. I would probably do the same thing,” Alex shifted his weight taking in the small qualities and features of the girl. Her light blonde hair was long that seemed to part far to the left of her head. Her long eyelashes seemed to make her brown eyes bigger with a small dipped nose. Rosy cheeks and bubbly little lips that let out light giggles with a sweet smile.
“I’m so embarrassing, oh my gosh,” her cheeks were a bright pink now while she brushed off her dark skinny jeans and blue pea coat. “You know I wouldn’t usually go and tell some random stranger my name, but I’m Bristol.”
“Really? I do that all the time,” Alex joked. “I’m Alex.”
“Like Alexander?” Bristol questioned.
“Erm, I prefer Alex,” he pointed out keeping a light smirk on his face. He couldn’t help but feel slightly nervous around her. Bristol had the outgoing, sweet, natural charm that forced a tint to his face. Overthinking and fear of embarrassment suddenly became a worry in Alex’s mind. Shit. “Uh, I’m sorry, but I gotta run and do something,” Alex said remembering Margo. All that feeling was now replaced with guilt not believing that he almost forgot. John already forgot about her today, and Alex didn’t want to, too.
“Fair enough, and it’s okay. But hey, there’s this party later—on eighth and Hammilton. You should stop by!” Bristol suggested. Alex agreed to meet her there before heading back to get the car. He had to rush everything that happened with Margo, leaving out the details of Bristol, and how she wanted him to come and get her. He didn’t wait for his friends’ replies heading off to the car and out of the city. While driving out, Alex answered his phone to Jack where he was able to explain everything better. He could easily try and make it there to get Margo and then be back to meet with them at the party.
He called Margo ten minutes before he got there to make sure he knew where he was picking her up. She said she would be waiting outside her neighborhood for him. As he drove he could help but look through the wave of thoughts in his mind that led all the way to the little cheery blond he met just a little while ago. When thinking of Bristol, Alex’s thoughts countered back to Margo for some reason. He didn’t understand why he kept thinking of Bristol but he did, and in some instances he mentally cursed at himself for comparing her to Margo. Bristol may have been one of those girls that he just happened to meet and just invited him to the party out of kindness. Maybe that was the case… but how come he didn’t want to believe it? No. He had to think about something else.
“Thank you” was the first thing Margo said when getting into the passenger’s seat of the car. Her dark hair falling in messy curls seeming as if she didn’t bother brushing it after a walk through the winds. But she didn’t have to, because she still looked beautiful.
Her greeting was not a relived kind of thank you but more of a meaningful one as if he was doing something that no one else would have done.
“Anytime,” Alex replied giving her a weak smile which she forced herself to return. “I’m sure that Jonathon didn’t mean-”
“So how is it down there?” Margo quickly cut Alex anxious to change the subject. He got a small and sudden vibe that there were things that Margo were leaving out about what happened, but he decided against saying anything.
“Sandy and cold, but there’s a party later down there if you’re interested,” Alex looked over at the girl who had her forehead pressed up against the window. Whatever happened, it really took a hit on Margo. This is one of the only issues that seemed to come up between her and Jonathon, and if it isn’t, it’s the first that Alex has heard about.
“Sounds cool.” She turned to look at Alex. She wasn’t crying, but she looked like she could start at any moment.
Alex didn’t know what else to say, so he simply replied with: “I’m sorry”. It seemed to be enough for Margo to give him a small smile. She turned her head back leaning it against the window as Alex drove the rest of the way.
The parking spot that they originally picked luckily was still there, so all Alex had to do was slide in. The two of them sat there for a moment in silence. He looked over at Margo who seemed too lost in a trance to notice.
“Marg,” Alex started, “you’re kind of scaring me.” They both let out a small laugh and snicker. She suddenly looked tired and worn just from the car ride.
She unbuckled the seat belt, “C’mon, darling, show me around a bit.” A sudden change of expression was shown as if trying to change the direction of her mind. Whatever happened between them, it obviously took quite the toll on her, and Alex wanted to know. She pushed the door open and slide out. “C’mon,” she cheered gesturing him.
