Fly Away With Me

Chapter 2

“Look who decided to finally show up,” Jack said when he saw me walking up to him. Jack was easily my best friend since grade school when I ended up sitting in front of him. He continually poked me in the back of the head with his pencil, and somehow our friendship began.
“Got side tracked,” I told him, “but hey, I’m here now.”
“It’s about fucking time,” he replied with a goofy grin, “Marg coming?”
“If she was, she’d be here,” Alex said to him.
“Poor Lexie,” Jack patted Alex’s back and went to load a few last things into the car.
“What’s she up to?” Cassadee asked coming out from Jack’s garage with a waterbottle in her grasp.
“She already made plans with her Johnny,” Jack answered for him. Alex didn’t have to tell him that, because if Margo wasn’t with them, she was most likely with Jonathon.
Alex shrugged it off. He didn’t realize how cold it was getting until now. He had his sweatjacket zipped with a hat on his head. He couldn’t imagine how it would feel on the beach by the ocean.
“Okay, got everything?” Rian asked popping his head up when shutting the trunk of the car. Rian and Cassadee would take his pickup truck while Alex, Jack, and Zack would take Jack’s.
“Time to fuck shit up!” Jack said enthusiastically while taking the passenger’s seat of the car. He pumped his fists on front of the car with excitement. Zack took the wheel while Alex shared the back with two coolers. The truck had all the tents, chairs, and some duffel bags of luggage or blankets while the car had the rest of the luggage and blankets in the back. They were all pretty much set for the hour and a half ride—give or take.
Naturally, Jack put the Blink CD into the car radio not hesitating to turn the volume up. Houses on the other side of the neighborhood could most likely hear it which wasn’t such a bad thing. He continued to tap his hands on the front of the car to the beat of the music bobbing his head as well.
It was an okay ride for the three of them with a variety of music and four orders of large McDonlads fries. It was around 7:30 and already pretty dark. When taking their first steps out of the car, the three boys were already shivering. Alex rubbed his hands together and crossed his arms. They found a parking spot easily with lack of people there. Soon enough, Rian and Cass pulled up and parked behind them.
The original idea was to find a place on the beach, but they all seemed to change their minds when Rian suggested they camp out under the boardwalk. It was only a few steps away, so getting everything to the desired spot wasn’t as bad as they initially though. Alex went and helped Rian get their tents in the back of the truck. They were able to gather four tents together; two from Rian, one from Zack, and another from Alex. Jack was able to get the coolers and a few chair, so they wouldn’t have to sit in the sand.
“You should put these together,” Alex said looking down at the tents and then at Rian.
“Just me,” Rian said shaking his head.
“Well, Cass can always help you,” Alex grinned getting a scoff from Rian, “fine, I’ll try.” As Alex knelt into the sand he instantly thought back to when Margo pulled the same thing to him in the tree house. Alex knew that if she was here she would probably go down to the water and try to go in. she would take a step seeing how cold it was, and then want to turn back with a scream realizing how freezing it was. Alex would then try and pick her up, walk into the water regardless of the temperature, and threaten to drop her in while she shrieked and begged him not to. That was when Alex caught himself smiling soon shaking it off realizing he should be putting the tent together.
With the assistance of Zack, Alex was able to put the tent together eventually. The rest of the tents were put up in the same pattern until there were four tents sitting in a semicircle. Jack and Rian were taking the chairs out most likely to set the up in the middle.
“Whoa, calm down, Al.” Cassadee said sarcastically sitting down to sit next to Alex who wasn’t too sure what to do with setting anything up. Alex looked over at her pushing a smile to his face. “What’s got ya?”
“What do you mean?” Alex asked knowing exactly what she meant. Cassadee didn’t have to say anything to him; she just narrowed her eyes at him. “Take a wild guess,” Alex knew that she was probably well aware with what he was thinking about so there was no need for an explanation.
Cass tried to push some of her hair out of her face, but it didn’t do much with their backs to the wind. “You know she would have came if she could,” she said, “but to me, I feel like she wants to be that ideal person for the guy that wants everything, well, perfect. But you know Margo, she’s not perfect, and especially not the way John expects her to be. She doesn’t know how to live like that, but with John, she does it, because she doesn’t seem to want to take any sort of risk of losing him even if that means putting up some façade. It’s like she tries to be a whole different person just for him. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me.” Alex nodded his head thinking about what she said. All that made sense. Maybe Margo felt that she needed to fit a certain persona to be with Jonathon because that was the type of person he was. If loving and being with him meant doing that, she would do it. Alex didn’t want to assume anything, but that was definitely something that would remain in the back of his head.
“Ya, I know what you mean. I’m not gonna lie, sometimes for like a second, I forget she’s even with him, but then I remember that’s why I’m not,” Alex let out a light laugh trying to maybe boost his spirit. The wind was aggressive hitting his back, but he ignored it pushing his hair back against it and rubbing his hands together.
Cassadee patted his shoulder with a small smile on her face, “I’m not gonna lie, sometimes for a second, I forget she’s not with you, but then I remember she will be eventually.” Alex didn’t have time to say anything, because the guys were all coming back with five chairs in their hands. The thought of that created a smile on his face. Alex just gave her a sincere smile mouthing “thanks”. He just hoped she was right.
