Fly Away With Me

Chapter 12

The campus was dark expect where the dorms were. That was where all the chaos was. This very much reminded Alex of all the parties you see in the movies. People running around half naked, guys throwing up in the bushes, girls rubbing and smearing the makeup off their faces were the typical scenery for the front of the building. He walked over streamers and miscellaneous items from Halloween costumes.
He was trying to call Jack while making his way through the people. Of course, he didn’t answer, but when making his way up the stairs, Alex couldn’t miss the commotion. There was a circle around the small crowd that consisted of John, Jack, Rian, Margo and two other guys who didn’t seem to be as involved.
“Barakat, I suggest you stay the hell out of this,” Jonathon giving Jack a petty push.
“Stop just fucking stop, John,” Margo said trying to get in between them. He looked down at her and scoffed before getting cut off.
“Just let them go, sweetie. Let John get his ass handed to him.” someone behind Jonathon piped up. John turned around using his instincts and started mouthing off to him.
“This doesn’t concern you, so just stay the fuck away. Got it?” he pointed a finger at him. At that point, Jack was saying something to Margo and noticed Alex who made his way to the front not sure what this whole thing was about.
“What’s going on?” Alex asked in the what-am-I-doing-here tone. Jack took a sip from his cup which he managed to keep in his hand while he and John most likely exchanged a few selected words.
“John is totally buzzing, and he is just looking for something quick to satisfy him,” Rian began.
“So, after ignoring Margo for most of the night, he remembers why he probably brought her,” Jack continued for him.
“He was ignoring her?” Alex interrupted.
“She was with us that whole night,” Rian answered, “but anyway, she wasn’t up to it. While she kept refusing, he kept pushing before he for real started pushing her, yah know after trying to feel her up, and she started pushing back. That was when Jack started getting into it telling him to knock it off, and boom here we are.”
“We figured you’d want to know and do something,” Jack admitted.
“What would make you say that? What would make you think I would want to get involved?” Alex said. He was upset that they called him all way here for this. Jonathon was being an ass, and he didn’t know what they expected him to do. Part of him was upset with Margo. Why she let him drag her off here and pretty much let him treat her as he pleased. She didn’t worry about what Alex was doing. She left him in the backseat while she drove straight into hell with John. All because she wanted to. For some crazy reason, she wanted to, and Alex was done trying to convince her otherwise.
“I don’t know, maybe by the look on your face and your clenched fists.” Jack pointed down only informing Alex that his hands were in fact balled up.
“What do you want me to do? Honestly. Because there’s no reason for me to be here,” Alex sighed. “If she wants to be with this guy, than that’s her choice. If she doesn’t, then she shouldn’t waste her time in a dead-end relationship that definitely can’t be fixed. I just don’t want to be the one that keeps trying only to be rejected for a guy that doesn’t even care about her.”
“You say that you’re gonna be “done” with her, but you and I both know you’re not going to follow through with that. Yah know, whatever that even means.” Jack could see right through Alex. Even though all that he said was true, Alex was very well aware that Jack may be right too. He just had to prove that he wasn’t bluffing.
He could see Margo who looked embarrassed and upset over with Cassadee. John was mouthing off to that other guy who got involved seeming to forget about Jack.
“Glad you think so, but I’m sorry to disappoint.” Alex turned squeezing his eyes shut before leaving to his car. He told himself that he just wasted his time driving up here, but that wasn’t entirely the case. Now that he said it, he just had to make it happen. Forget about her.
Stopping what he has felt for her since they met was not something that would be easily accomplished. He didn’t know why he was like this, but finding someone else would do the trick. And he knew exactly the person that would give him what he needed, and he was hoping he could return the favor.
Alex woke up the next morning letting the night before smack him in the face. He would have much rather finished the Halloween night with his parents texting back and forth to Bristol than spend an hour and a half of his time driving to a party for no reason just to admit that he was done with her. The girl that he dove for since the beginning, but lately, he didn’t even know what page she was on.
Last period came, and neither knew what to say. So for a while, they didn’t say anything. She knew about what Alex had said the night before, and he was still trying to sort it out. She turned to him not saying anything at first. He looked up at her blank expression. “I’m sorry if you think I’m wasting my time.”
Alex dropped his shoulders automatically knowing where this was going. “I’m sorry you’re the one that keeps getting rejected for the one that doesn’t care. It doesn’t seem to bother you so much when you’re running around with your perky little blonde.”
“Bristol has nothing to do with this. And how would you know? You’re always the one who’s ditching me to be ignored by your so called, perfect, one and only boyfriend.” Alex didn’t mean for the words to come out as harsh as they did. As soon as he said them, she looked a little taken back from his words. But he wasn’t so entirely sure that he had regretted saying them.
“You don’t get it, okay? And I don’t expect you to. You can go run off and save your little princess from the dragon and live happily ever after. Ignore all the shit that’s going on and fly away together into obscurity.” Margo looked as if she wanted to cry, but she didn’t.
“Margo, calm down,” Alex sighed giving in, “you’re just upset.” It hurt what she said, but she didn’t mean it. They both knew that, but part of Alex did take a hit from it.
“How bad do you want to forget about me?” she asked.
“Marg-”
“Tell me.”
“I don’t.”
“Alex. How do you think it feels when you hear that your best friend is done with you and wants to forget you?” They looked at each other tension burning like a fire. Now he felt awful. He wasn’t thinking about how she was feeling assuming that she didn’t care.
“How do you think it feels thinking that your best friend actually is forgetting you and is done with you?” Alex bit back. “You’re so sucked up into this guy’s bullshit that you’re becoming his damn puppet. By saying three little words that he obviously doesn’t mean, he pretty much has you wrapped around his finger”
“Are you fucking serious?” she asked distraught. “How can you think I could be done with you just like that. I couldn’t and would never wake up one morning and decide that I don’t want you in my life anymore, because I would do anything to keep you in it.”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” he replied
“Oh really? Than how did you mean it?” she snapped back.
“I wanted to forget about you in that way, okay? I wanted to stop having these weird feelings towards you and caring so much about you. Dammit Margo.” He hands were balled onto the desk, and at that point, he avoided looking at her.
“What do you mean? What’s so bad about caring about your friend?” he knew that she didn’t get it, and it would take some more explaining which was not something he thought he was good at. How do you explain to your best friend that you wish for something more? Was this small fight a sign to him that things wouldn’t work out? No, because when it came down to it, some little signs weren’t going to determine his relationship.
“There’s nothing wrong with it, but that’s just it. I don’t want to see you as just a friend, okay? I know that you probably think that it’s wrong, but I can’t help it. That’s what I want to forget about. Seeing you as something possibly more than a friend, ‘cause I know that I’m just setting myself up for failure.” He avoided looking at her not wanting to risk seeing her expression.
“Alex-”
“I’m sorry, Margo, I really am. But don’t worry about it. I’ll….I’ll just have to get over it.” And what seemed to be saved by the bell, Alex rose leaving not turning back. What did he just do? He didn’t want to hear what she was going to say, because he knew that it would just plummet things even farther down the drain.
“Hey,” Jack said to a mute Alex as he dropped himself into his car. “Hey, you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Alex replied adjusting his gaze out the window. From the parking lot, he could notice Margo and Jonathon and their little crew all bundled around the front of the building. He ignored her glances for his whereabouts only seeing her get engulfed by a hug from John and then him settling his arm around her shoulder.
Jack pulled out beginning to talk about little things that went on today. He looked over at Alex realizing that he wasn’t listening. Alex didn’t even notice that Jack pulled over along the curb until the car stopped. “Really, man, something’s bothering you,” Jack shifted his position to face him.
“Dude, I’m fine,” Alex replied.
“No, you’re not. I can tell.”
“How can you tell?”
“C’mon I haven’t seen you this mad and upset since the last Deathly Hallows movie.”
“Hey, that movie was intense as hell,” Alex said in defense knowing that he was getting off topic. Sooner or later telling Jack what happened was bound to happen. It only ended up being sooner because Jack threatened to not leave until he confessed. It wouldn’t have been as big of a problem if Alex wasn’t starving or had to piss as bad as he did.
“Damn,” Jack said after hearing his story.
“Damn is right,” he replied.
“But, dude, how do you even know what she thinks when you didn’t even let her talk?” while it can be argued that Jack made a pretty good point, Alex had the feeling that he would already know how it would have went down. He would let her talk, she would go on about how crazy that is and how she doesn’t feel that way, Alex wouldn’t know what to say, things would get awkward, and there’s life as he knew it. There was no way he was going to let that happen. Things were already—assumingly—awkward, and there was no need to made it worse.
“I just know how things would have gone,” he said.
Jack let out a dramatic breath, “Jesus, you’re difficult.”
“No, I’m just-”
“fucking impossible.” Jack intercepted, “Alright, listen. Apologize for not letting her talk cause you had a lot on your mind with getting it out. Tell her that you didn’t think things would go well and you were scared. Then you hear her out. Take it step by step. Maybe she’ll surprise you.”
Alex leaned his head back against the back of the seat. He looked over at Jack soon leaning himself forward, “thanks, bro.”
“No problem, just turn that frown upside down,” Jack smiled placing his fingers in cheeks were his dimples would show. Sure enough it got a smile and a chuckle out of Alex which was something that he’s needed.
