Fly Away With Me

Chapter 10

-MARGO’S POV
Crammed in the back seat of Jonathon’s car with people she barely had a conversation with was exactly how Margo wanted to spend her Monday afternoon. Jonathon sat in the front seat with Eleanor Wells in the passenger’s while Margo was bumped right behind John pressed against the door. Leo Davis, Corey Mirell, and George Clark were squeezed into the backseat with her, and she almost felt as if they didn’t even remember that she was there the way Corey continued to accidently jostle her.
Eleanor tapped her fingers on the middle compartment with her fingers laughing at something that John was saying. All Margo could do was roll her eyes. She didn’t want to let this get to her; she never did. She brushed off anything that would rub her the wrong way.
“So, tomorrow we can leave around 7:30 and grab some cans then head to the campus and try and be there by 8:15ish,” Jonathon started talking about his college party. Of course, all three boys and probably Eleanor was going, but Margo was not. He has been talking about it nonstop, but when she brought it up he replied with a “I didn’t think you would want to since I have been depriving you of your “freedom” and “friends”. Wouldn’t you rather hang out with them than me?”
When he said it, she could have easily snapped back, but a fight was not something she wanted to start. Margo left it alone, and ever since, she has been crammed in the backseat sinking deeper and deeper into the seat.
“I’ll make sure I’m on time this time,” Leo said pushing some of John’s punctual buttons. He wanted things to always happen according to plan. Nothing more, nothing less.
“That’s exactly what I want to hear,” he said back.
The car came to a stop, and Margo prayed that she could finally leave the car. Corey leaned across her opening the door barely giving her time to get out. Jonathon found her hand and interlocked his fingers with his. “Love you,” he whispered into her ear. Love. This is what it was. This is how it must be, but it didn’t feel right. She told herself that she loved him. She told herself that they were it. I’m sure when it comes, you’ll just know when you are, she repeated Alex’s words in her head over and over again. Man, she wished he was here right now.
She opened her mouth but interrupted by Eleanor’s shriek calling for John as George and Corey ran after her. Yeah, everyone knew that Eleanor and Jonathon hooked up a few times and claimed to date once, but the feelings didn’t seem like ancient history. El was now in an on and off relationship with George, but he was oblivious and she was determined.
John let go of her hand to yell something to them before walking into his house with Margo following. The others soon came letting their laughter drift off. She thought that things would be better now that her and John got over everything. In actuality, she didn’t see it was slowly deteriorating.
“Ah, damn,” John handed and tossed out cans of soda from the fridge. Margo sat down at the table taking glances at her phone every other second. She didn’t even notice when Eleanor sat right down next to her with the exchange of awkward smiles.
“You look happy to be here,” Eleanor said noticing desolate expression on her face.
“Thrilled,” she replied with a hint of sarcasm.
“It’s not exactly the cherry on top of a flawless Monday with you moping around here, but honestly what’s the matter?” Margo could use the lack of arrogance from El, but the concern was appreciated. She wasn’t sure if the girl actually cared or just wanted Margo to get over whatever was bothering her.
“You actually care?” From the way things are going, it was obvious they weren’t the best of friends. It wasn’t that they did anything to each other just their attitudes and personalities didn’t go well. Whenever they spoke, snaps and mockery was always involved. They would take mental pokes and punches at each other naturally.
“Well, I’m pretty positive that I already know what it is, but what’s the point of hanging around if you don’t even want to be here?”
“Who says I don’t want to be here?” Margo defended only causing Eleanor to scoff and roll her eyes.
“Oh please, Margo. It looks like you would rather gouge your eyes out than be here with us. We’re just not people that bring out the best of you, and trust me I would know cause from what I see it’s never good. You and John say you “love” each other, but c’mon. I know I’m the last person you want to have this conversation with, but let’s get real, you and John just don’t match or care about each other the way you want or claim to.” Eleanor told her ripping the Band-Aid off of Margo’s current state of denial.
“How you guys even got together and hit it off is beyond me, but you two are long overdue. What about that, uh, Andy guy or Jared or something you’re friends with?”
“You mean Alex and Jack? Wait, what are you even trying to do?” Margo asked.
“I’m just giving you options, jeeze since it’s clear as day that you and John are handing by a thread. I mean, you and that Alex guy could and always are easily mistaken as a couple. And don’t even try to deny it, because everyone sees it. Even Jonathon,” Eleanor continued. Margo didn’t think that the brown eyed brunette would care to give her this kind of advice. That she wanted to help her. She was expressing the obvious things that Margo didn’t want to admit, and for some reason, she wanted to scream. She wanted to yell at herself for thinking that, and this love thing was baffling.
Margo ran her hands through her hair holding onto her scalp while Eleanor finished. She didn’t even know why they were suddenly having this conversation, and it just made her confused.
Ever since things with Jonathon took off, everything with Alex was questioned. When they met, she didn’t expect them to grow the way they did. He became her best and only friend for a while, but she thought that it would turn to something different. More? She just thought he wanted things to remain how they were, so she pushed herself to find someone who turned out to be Jonathon.
Somehow they hit it off when they were on the same volleyball team for gym. She drifted into the back along the sidelines, but he pulled her to actually participate; he asked her out and that was that. It was March of junior year making it around eight months. How they managed, you may ask. Basically Margo would try and be everything he wanted which happened to be everything she was not. Perfect.
“Okay, ready?” Jonathon asked to El and Margo putting his shoes back on. She didn’t know where they were going next, but she better be prepared to be shoved and pressed against the car door and unknowingly shoved by Corey’s elbow.
