Remembering Sunday
Chapter 7
"What's going on?" I said jumping into the passenger side, buckling my seatbelt looking behind me seeing one of the fire trucks pulling out of the garage.
"Little girl is trapped inside the house with a gas leak. We need to get her out, and you are getting her out. She's 3 and we all know you're the only guy in this department that can interact with little kids and they actually like you so they'll listen to you besides me." he said racing down the street turning a sharp corner realizing it was only right down the road.
I jumped out of the car and put on my gas mask and raced inside.
The girls mom wasn't answering the door and the neighbors called cause they smelt fumes and got worried.
I searched every room before hearing a little girl crying in the next room over. I took a quick look in the kitchen and saw the stove was turned on so I ran and turned it off before running back to the room where the little girl was.
I walked in seeing her curled up into a ball crying and shaking. I walked up to her slowly reaching my hand out for her.
She looked up at me terrified and let out a little yelp before shouting "monster!"
"No, no baby girl, it's just me, a fireman! You know the guys in the red hats with the hoses that have water come out?"
She nodded and slowly sat up.
"But... But where is your hat?"
I smiled even though she couldn't see.
"Well this isn't a fire! You really need to get out of the house cause there is a scary monster that farted and if you don't get out it'll make you sick. Now you don't want that, do you?"
The little brunette giggled and shook her head before lunging at me.
"Mr. Fireman, why is my mommy sleeping?"
I cocked an eyebrow up at her and took off my mask and put it on her.
Then it hit me. Shit. I ran the girl out of the house and handed her over to Flyzik who was now wearing Micky Mouse ears to try and get her to giggle which worked. I handed her a small pink teddy bear before whispering to Flyzik to call another ambulance asap and he obliged as I ran back into running up the stairs taking two almost three at a time before I reached a bedroom door that was slightly opened. I pushed it open seeing a young woman sprawled out on the bed, a bottle of pills laid out next to her.
"Nononono. Ma'am can you hear me?!?!"
No response.
I ran up to her placing my ear on her chest hearing no heartbeat, so I checked her pulse. Nothing.
I called Flyzik on my pager asking him where the ambulance was and he said they were on their way up. As he said that, three EMT's ran up and took over.
"We'll take this from here"
I nodded and walked back down the stairs out onto the lawn seeing Flyzik sitting in the back of the ambulance dancing with the little girl. That made me smile how he got along with kids like I did so that helped us out a lot.
"Mr. Fireman, did the monsters stinky fart make mommy sick?"
I panicked a little before shrugging and kissing the top of her head.
"Let's get you to the doctor so we can see if the icky monster farts gave you nasty germs!" I said tickling her before jumping into the back of the ambulance strapping her into the gurney while Flyzik started to drive to the hospital.
Man I really hated yet loved my job. I just really wanted to see Jack.
