Remembering Sunday

You're My Hero. (Epilogue)

I walked into my house, tiny bundle in my arms softly babbling up a storm.

I traveled all the way to England to adopt, and I wanted her to be where Alex was from. I got her as a newborn since that's what we talked about, agreeing strongly that it should be a girl.

Alex always wanted her to be a daddy's girl. He wanted to be her knight and shining armor. Now he was.

~

I sat in the waiting room of the hospital in Essex. Taylor was in the delivery room at the moment birthing my soon to be child.

My head shot up when I saw the doctor walk out with a smile on his face.

"Would you like to see your daughter, Jack?" He asks calmly, and I smiled and nodded, following him to a small room.

I walked in, seeing a tiny crib that they kept newborns in, in the middle of a soft creme colored room. I discovered a tiny baby girl wrapped in the soft fuzzy purple blanket Larissa and Heaven had bought for me to bring her home in.

With further inspection, I discovered she already had smooth light brown hair and blue eyes that squinted happily at me. I couldn't help but smile and hold out my finger for her to grab, which see happily did, automatically pulling it into her mouth to suck on it.

A small tear fell down my cheek admiring the beauty that was before me.

"C-can I hold her?" I ask the doctor and he nodded. I carefully placed one hand under her back, retracting my finger so I could use that hand to support her head and pulled her into my chest.

"What's her name?" I asked, gently rocking her.

"Her mother said it was up to you." The doctor said, leaning up against the door.

I had thought of names just encase this were to happen and smiled when I realized I was able to use it.

"Lexi May Barakat." I whispered as she opened her eyes and sleepily smiled at me before dozing back to sleep.

When Lexi was 3, I took her to see her Daddy for the first time. She didn't quite understand why he was in Heaven and not down here with us, but she still sat in front of his grave and talked to him about all of her new barbie dolls and how she couldn't wait for him to come home so he could play with her cause I got boring sometimes. I couldn't help but laugh at that and pull her into my chest as she continued to babble on about what types of dresses they wore for dinner that night.

~

When Lexi was 8, she finally understood what happened and took it pretty well.

"Does he still love me?" She asks, playing with her wavy hair.

"Of course he does, Lexi. He's looking down on you smiling, saying how proud of you he is cause that small speech you did for school today!" I said happily, remembering how she actually did a speech on who was her hero and she smiled.

"Papa, I never asked you this." Lexi said softly.

"What is it, baby girl?" I asked, pushing her soft hair behind her ear.

"What's all those marks from? You have a lotta them papa. Do they hurt? Or is it marker?" She asks curiously, sitting on my lap.

I laughed and hugged her.

"Let's just say your papa was my knight and shining armor and saved my life." I said shaking her a little bit.

She smiled and turned around to look at me and then back at Alex's grave.

"I want to be just like daddy then. Okay, Papa?" She said with a huge grin. A small tear ran down my cheek.

"You'll be my hero if you do that."

~

When Lexi was 18, she walked across the stage of her high school graduation happily accepting her diploma. She said a speech, letting everybody know what her main goal was in life. She never dropped that goal.

"I'm going to save lives just like my Daddy did when he saved my Papa." Everybody knew what and who she was talking about, standing up and cheering, causing tears to well up in my eyes.

~

When she was 21, that's just what she did.

She graduated Fire School, top of her class, and the only girl. When she took her certificate she spotted me standing by the back door, arms crossed with the biggest grin on my face. She locked eyes with me and ran full force into my arms.

"I did it, Papa." She said happily.

I pulled back and looked at her in the eyes.

"Lexi May Barakat, you are my hero."

I love the pictures of you and your brother, it's truly amazing. And the story is great (On chapter ten if you're confused.) By the way, you make it seem like you never see him, if you don't mind my asking, where is he? You don't have to say if you're uncomfortable, just wondering..
