Remembering Sunday

Chapter 38 (final)

(3rd Person)

Jack and Alex were making dinner, talking about where they wanted their wedding to be.

"I kinda want it in the country." Alex said and Jack nodded.

"I wouldn't mind that." Jack said with a smile, stirring the sauce he made for their spagetti.

Alex looked out the window and their neighbors house seeing smoke forming at the top of the large house.

"Jack." Alex said quietly and pointed out the window to the house.

"Smoke? Baby it's probably the fireplace." Jack said shrugging and continued to stir the sauce.

"Jack, baby, they don't have a fire place." Alex said, gasping when he saw flames from inside the home.

"Alex, no." Jack said when he saw his fiance jogging to the front door, slipping on his shoes.

"Alex! Just call the fire department!" Jack shouted and Alex just shook his head.

"No, Jack. They have kids!" Alex said and ran out the door across the lawn to get to the said house.

"Baby, you don't have your gear!" Jack shouted, fear very obvious in his voice.

"Call 911!" Alex shouted, just as he ran into the house, smoke already attacking his lungs.

Jack shakily pulled out his phone and dialed the fire department instead, shouting when he heard the all to familiar sound of the windows bursting.

Rian answered the phone.

"Baltimore, Maryland Station 7 Fire Department, Rian speaking."

"Rian, oh my god, Rian. The house.... Next door. Fire. Alex." That's all Jack had to say before Rian told him they'll be there, hanging up and signaling an emergency.

The whole fire department went into action even faster than normal when they heard who was in the house.

Even Flyzik.

They got into their assigned fire trucks after suiting up and Flyzik in the ambulance, driving as fast as possible to the house fire.

Alex ran out of the house, already black in the face with two tiny babies in hand and gently laid them on the lawn pointing to Jack then back at the babies, Jack picking them up, watching Alex run back into the house.

Jack soon heard the sirens blaring down the street and then the men jumped out of the truck, Rian and Zack being one of the first ones off.

"He's i-in there." Jack said as he handed the babies to Zack who took them elsewhere.

If Jack couldn't be more upset, he sure has hell was now. The house started cracking and he saw the roof cave in.

"Alex!" Jack and Rian screamed in unison and they both ran to the house, but Flyzik tackled Jack to the ground, clutching onto him for dear life.

"Let me go! I need to save Alex!" Jack all but screamed, but Flyzik just held him tight, shushing him, trying to be the friend he hasn't been lately.

"I gotta get my baby." Jack sobbed into Flyziks arms.

"Rian's getting him." Flyzik said, voice shaky.

It's been too long, Zack thought. He walked up to the two and put his arms around Jack, covering his face as the house collapsed, sending everything onto the ground.

Even though Jack didn't see it; he knew what happened. He let out this mix of a choked sob and scream, turning around seeing the house in even more flames.

"Shit." Zack said as he ran with the two others to try and retrieve the two lost men.

Ten agonizing minuets later, Jack saw Rian with a body over his shoulders, that was hardly recognizable.

It was Alex.

Jack pulled himself from Flyziks grip and ran over to him in tears as Rian placed the badly burnt boy on a stretcher.

"We need to get him to a hospital." Flyzik said, pulling him into the ambulance.

"Let me in!" Jack screamed and Flyzik had a flashback to when Jack wanted Alex in the ambulance with him when he was in the house fire. He sighed and nodded, having Jack jump into the back of the ambulance and take a hold of Alex's black, blistered hand gently.

"He's barely responsive." Flyzik said to Rian who was also in the back with them.

"Talk to him, Jack. It may help him. Do whatever you can." Flyzik said, while carefully but quickly hooking Alex up to monitors.

"Alex, baby, look at me." Jack pleaded, looking over at Rian who was holding Alex's other hand with tears in his eyes.

"We have stuff to do, Lex! Remember our wedding? We have to do our dance, remember? Our first dance! We have to, Lex, we have to! I was so excited and could tell you were too! We still have to practice though, right? Cause i'm clumsy, but you're really good. You're good at a lot of things, Alex. That's why we need you! I need you! You're sister, Alex! Oh my god, you're sister." Jack cried, wiping tears that were flowing down his cheeks.

"You were gonna have a baby daughter, Lex. Like you've been wanting! You gotta be here for that." Jack said calmly this time, bringing Alex's hand to his lips.

"Lexy, please." Jack whispered, and at the name, Alex opened his eyes slowly and looked over at his fiance.

"Jacky." Alex croaked out and smiled softly.

"Hi baby, you're gonna be okay, right? Tell me you're gonna be okay." Jack said quickly.

"I wish I could say that." Alex said, closing his eyes and took in a slow deep breath.

"No, you're going to live!" Jack shouted a bit too loud.

"Just... Just p-promise me you'll get our daughter." Alex whispered and Jack nodded quickly.

"I promise." Jack whispered back and Alex smiled softly before his eyes slipped closed and his monitor was a long beep.

Flyziks head whipped around and quickly tried to revive him but it was too late. Alex was gone.

Jack screamed, cried, did everything under the moon. He just wanted his Alex.

"Call it." Rian said to Flyzik, obvious tears falling down his face.

"Time of death, 6:25." Flyzik said as he covered Alex's body with a white sheet, a small tear rolling down his cheek.

He didn't even get to say he was sorry.

The rest of the ride to the hospital was spent in silence. Jack, Rian, and Flyzik now in a state of shock. Flyzik had told everyone over the speaker that Alex was pronounced dead at the scene.

When the ambulance doors opened and Jack stepped out right before Alex got pulled out, everyone person from the fire department was circled around the ambulance, some of their heads bowed to respect the loss of their best friend, co worker, brother.

Jack stayed behind to watch Alex wheeled into the hospital, only whispering bye to him.

The call to his sister was harder than he imagined. She thought Jack was joking and yelled over to Larissa about it, laughing. But Larissa knew it was a joke.

I had to tell them how Alex was pronounced dead at 6:25 and she lost it.

Her brother was gone.

~

(Jack's POV)

The day of Alex's funeral, it was held outside. Red, white, and blue flowers surrounded his grave, and an American Flag draped over his casket. Next to his casket was pictures of him and his sister, his fire department, and a picture of me and him.

I didn't cry and I didn't even really move. I was numb.

My fiance was really gone.

When Alex was lowered into the ground, I pulled Heaven into me, watching him laid to rest.

A small tear rolled down my cheek when everybody left but I stayed behind at his grave. I looked one last time before saying my last 6 words before walking away.

"I miss you, I'm so sorry."

Notes

I love the pictures of you and your brother, it's truly amazing. And the story is great (On chapter ten if you're confused.) By the way, you make it seem like you never see him, if you don't mind my asking, where is he? You don't have to say if you're uncomfortable, just wondering..
