Party At The End Of The World

She's Dancing Alone

Kat’s POV
One, Two, Three, Four!

I never meant for this to happen,
I guess we'll be better off this way,
I can't pretend anymore,
Now there’s an empty space where you lay.

I leaned back in my chair backstage and watched the words I’d written pour smoothly from Fabiola’s red lips. Fabi was my absolute best friend, no doubt, but she overshadowed me in every way. I wrote songs for Fabi and her band, Behind the Scene, to play. If I had the voice and the nerve for it, maybe I’d sing them myself, but for now, I was just the songwriter for my best friend’s band. Fabi has this amazing voice that people would’ve killed themselves to hear. Like the sirens in Greek mythology. Fabi was a siren. She was also one of the most gorgeous people I’d ever met. She had long, curly hair that she’d died purple (her favorite color) and she was at least four inches taller than me. She was thin but curvy and she had big green eyes that looked amazing with her totally tan skin. Other than her purple hair, there was nothing fake about Fabiola. She was a genuinely incredible person. She even gave me credit at the end of every single song I wrote—and I’d written all of them. The only thing I don’t envy about Fabi is her rich and conceited family. Her parents married into a business relationship and had two kids—a snotty son who is currently studying at Princeton and a daughter with a passion and talent for music. Honestly, I think Fabi spends more time at my house than at hers.

And I hope our memories fade into darkness
Because my past is full of regret
But my future’s full of remembering
All the good things in life you made me forget.

This was the last song for the concert, so Fabi thanked the crowd one more time before leading Justin, Liam, and Jacob off the stage. Fabi approached me and gave me a little kiss on the cheek.

“Awesome show, Fabi. This crowd was sick.” Justin said, patting Fabi on the back. Justin was the band’s bassist and one of my really great friends. He was the rare kind of person you just never really get sick of being around. “I love the new song, Kat.” He complimented me as he walked off. I used to have a huge crush on Justin but I’d accepted our fated destiny as good friends. As Justin walked off, an attractive guy with dark hair passed him and approached Fabi.

“Incredible show tonight. It’s Fabiola, right?” The guy asked as Fabi took a sip from her water bottle.

“Yeah, but people call me Fabi. And thanks.” Fabi said with a bright smile. If I tried to smile that big, I’d look like a sadistic clown.

“No problem, Fabi.” The guy said with a nod. “I’m Matt Flyzik, tour manager of a little band you may or may not have heard of.”

“Try me.” Fabiola said with a confident smirk.

“All Time Low?” Flyzik said. I knew them, and I knew Fabi did, too. Actually, we were pretty big fans. We’d gone to see their concert in our (and their) hometown of Baltimore last month.

“I know them well, actually.” Fabi said. I could tell she was excited about meeting their tour manager and she was just playing it cool. She was practically bouncing on the balls of her feet. Then again, so was I.

“Awesome. Well, Alex Gaskarth is throwing a huge party to kick off the summer and a bunch of big bands are coming. He was wondering if you wanted to come, but it’s sort of short notice.” Flyzik said.

“When is it?” Fabi asked, gulping down her water.

“Tonight.” Flyzik responded. Fabi swallowed hard.

Tonight?” Fabi sounded astounded. I’m not sure why. It’s not like she has anything going on tonight. Then, Fabi’s voice dropped to a casual monotone as she brought back her bright smile. “Yeah, I can make it. Kat, are you in?” Flyzik turned to look at me. Even though I was standing right next to Fabi I don’t think he noticed me until Fabi said my name.

“Actually,” Flyzik said hesitantly, “I think this party is only for members of bands…sorry…” Flyzik sounded genuinely embarrassed and I looked down at my black converse shoes. I was about to shyly mutter “It’s fine.” When Fabi opened her mouth.

“Kat is a part of the band. She’s written all of our songs. If it weren’t for her, we’d still be back at square one. If she’s out, I’m out for sure.” Fabi was by far the most stubborn person I knew.

“Then I guess you’re both out. I’m really sorry but--”

“Flyzik, are you giving these gorgeous girls a hard time? You’re not trying to get them in bed, are you?” A voice came from behind Flyzik, playfully pushing him out of the way. I recognized the face immediately. Alex Gaskarth. He was absolutely gorgeous. His hair was perfectly messy in a totally sexy way and his facial features were flawless. “Hey ladies.” Fabi gave him a smile and I waved awkwardly.

“You’re not telling them they can’t come to my party, are you?” Alex asked.

“Well, you said it was for band members only, and this song writer girl wanted to come and…” Alex cut Flyzik off for a second time.

“You wrote that last song?” Alex asked, his eyes fixed on me.

“Yeah.” I said. “I wrote all of them, actually.”

“Damn, girl.” Alex said, patting me on the back. “You’re good. Anyways, the party’s at my house at ten. It’s the big house on the corner of Skyre Avenue. You can’t miss it. Plus, if you get there fashionably late, the party will already be in full swing so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding it. Tell the rest of your band, those guys seem cool. Hope you both can make it.” Alex winked in my direction as he walked off, Flyzik following behind him. Fabi turned to me, and I have to admit, we were both a little too excited.
