Don't Make This Easy, I Want You To Mean It

The New Girl

Isabelle’s POV

“Mom, I don’t know if this is such a great idea…” I whined as my mom’s blue Volkswagen sped down the curvy road alongside the river.

“You’ll be fine, Isabelle.” My mom said, pressing even harder on the gas. She was certainly in a rush to dump me off at the Dawson’s house. The Davenports (that’s my family) and the Dawsons had been friends since before I was born. I knew they had a son about my age, Rian, but I’d only met him about twice. The Dawsons were nice and all, but I was anxious about living with them for the entire summer. According to my health-ecstatic mother, it would be healthy for me. Sure, I’d had a rough time the past year, battling depression after my brother died in October, but I was very against the entire idea anyways. She hardly knew the family and they lived a full hour away from her. True, the only real friend I had back home was Ellis, who was vacationing in Singapore, but the idea of moving in with near complete strangers was appalling to me. My parents were trying to fix up their somewhat messy marriage by going on a two month vacation together, leaving me behind. I had begged to stay at home alone, but to no prevail.

“Here we are.” Mrs. Davenport said as she pulled into the driveway of an enormous yellow house. It was gorgeous. Very classically built but with a modern twist. It somehow made the entire situation slightly more comfortable for me. Once the car was parked, I grabbed my bags from the trunk and headed towards the front door, which swung open before I had the chance to ring the bell. I was immediately pulled into someone’s unfamiliar arms.

“Isabelle, dear!” Mrs. Dawson said as she finally released me. “It’s so wonderful to see you, darling! You were this little when I last saw you!” Mrs. Dawson made an exaggerated gesture with her hands to display how little I had been. “We’re so glad you’re staying with us!” She’s the only one, I thought. “You’ll be staying upstairs in the second room on the left. The boys are down in the basement, if you want to go say hello while I catch up with your mother.” The boys? I thought it was just Rian? Or maybe she meant her husband, too? Whatever. I dragged my bags upstairs before walking back down to the basement. It was as enormous as the rest of the house. Posters supporting the Baltimore Ravens and various other sports teams were displayed proudly on the blue walls. There was a foosball table, an air hockey table, pool table, and one of those mini basketball shootout games in the room. The rest of the room was consumed with at least five different gaming systems and a flat screen TV. There were blue couches and sofa chairs to match the walls spread out near the TV area. Maybe could grow to like it here. At the foosball table, four boys about my age were playing the game violently competitively. I went completely unnoticed for at least sixty seconds.

“Damn you, Alex!” One of the boys exclaimed. This boy had skunk hair, big eyes, and pouty lips. He was kinda cute.

“Better luck next time, bitch.” The boy I assumed was Alex spoke. This boy was slightly shorter. He had some kind of tattoo on his hand and really awesome hair. He was cute, too. After a few more minutes of playing, the team with Alex and a really muscular guy who, not to sound slutty, was also cute, won the game.

“Uh, hi.” I said awkwardly. All four of them turned to me.

“Hey, Isabelle!” Rian said energetically. “Guys, this is our old family friend, Isabelle Davenport. She’s staying with us for the summer. Remember?” The guys nodded.

“Rian told us about you. Well, not about you, but he said you were coming. I’m Jack Barakat.” The boy with a skunk hair said. I smiled and waved shyly. “By the way, you’re totally hot and I’m willing to make out with you whenever you like.” I blushed at Jack’s candidness.

“I’m Alex.” The guy I identified as Alex before said. I waved again. “I apologize for his rudeness, although I have to admit, you’re really beautiful.” I blushed again. Damn them.

“I’m Zack.” Said the muscular guy. I waved a final time.

“Hey Isabelle, did you bring a bathing suit?” Rian asked. I nodded. “Cool,” he said, “Want to go swimming with us?” Rian gestured to the pool right outside. It was one of those really natural-looking pools with the plants growing all around it and stuff. His house was leveled so that the pool was on basement level. Cool.

“Right now?” I asked. “Shouldn’t I settle in or something first?” I noticed then that all of the guys already had bathing suit trunks on.

“Nah.” Rian said “There’ll be time for that later. Come on, get changed.” I rolled my eyes and went upstairs to get changed. At least he was nice. They all seemed nice. I undressed and slipped on my blue-and-white striped strapless bikini top and my matching bottoms. I tossed my blonde, wavy hair into a loose bun and headed downstairs. The guys were already in the pool. Alex and Jack were tackling each other and Rian and Zack were hitting a beach ball back and forth. When I stepped outside I heard Blink 182 blaring through the stereos and I subconsciously started singing along to “First Date”, which caught they guy’s attention.

“Damn girl, you can sing!” Alex said, ending the wrestling match with Jack. There was clear disappointment in Jack’s face. “And you have sick taste in music.” Alex added.

“I like to think I do.” I said smugly. “And thanks for the compliment on my singing.”

“No problem.” Alex grinned. He was really cute. “Get in!” he said, splashing me from the pool. The water was fucking icy.

“Count to ten for me?” I asked. All the guys started counting and on one I jumped in. Ever since I was a kid I always had to have people countdown for me. When I explained that to the guys, they all laughed.

“That’s the cutest thing ever.” Alex said, smirking. I ducked under the water so no one saw me blush. I think I’m going to like it here.
