More Than I Could Ever Dream Of

Smiles and Frowns

I’m halfway through my Tuesday aka four in the afternoon since I work from eight in the morning till eleven at night; it’s ridiculous, I know, but I need the money. All I want to do right now is sleep because I had trouble sleeping last night, but it’s hard to wind down when all I want to do when I get home is to go to bed. The wait for a text or call from Alex is on my mind doesn’t help, either. Since I'm between my two jobs, I get to eat a quick dinner before I have to clock in at the restaurant I waitress at. I brought my own food and sat in my shitty fifteen year old car and began eating which was nothing out of the ordinary until I heard my phone vibrate; I looked at the screen immediately, seeing who it was.

Hey. I'm still hoping to see you again.

Alex.

I smiled.

Me too. Do you have somewhere in mind?

Do you enjoy karaoke?

Definitely.

Awesome! :) This weekend?

Sounds great.

I was relieved seeing as I don't work during the weekend... well, sometimes I might work on Saturday, but this time I'm free. Once we aired out the details, I continued to eat while I tried to not smile so much. The day went by quicker than I expected and I sent a short text to Miranda before I laid my head down on my pillow for the night before a crazy day began in the morning.

Heard from Alex. I'll give ya the details tomorrow.

I woke up after a great night's sleep and to a long text from my bestie; she seemed a bit too excited to hear about what Alex and I discussed.

OMG! Can't believe you're gonna make me wait like this. I love you, but why must you torture me like this. Sorry. I know I can be dramatic, but I am totally eager to hear about what transpired! Talk to ya soon, honey! I'll try not to be like this when I hear from you, but I can't make any promises.

I shook my head and laughed, thinking about how our conversation is going to go. Around noon which was my lunch break, I texted Miranda that I was able to talk; she called within seconds.

“Hey.”

“Hey. How’s your day going?”

“Good. You?”

“The same. Ok. Now that we got that out of the way, tell me about what Alex said. Did he call you?”

“He texted me when I was eating dinner which made me smile. He said that he’s still hoping to see me again.”

“Aw… what did ya say?”

“Me too and I asked if I had somewhere in mind. He asked if I liked karaoke.”

“Which is an obvious yes.”

“So, we’re doing a karaoke night this weekend.”

“That is going to be amazing! You have a great voice.”

“His is greater. It’s a little nerve wracking, seeing that he sings for a living, but I’m more than excited.”

“He’s gonna like you even more after this. I just know it.”

“Because you know everything.”

“I do.”

I laughed.

“Well, thank you for catching me up on the Abby/Alex saga. I’ll let you eat.”

“Have a good rest of your day.”

“You too, hun. Love ya.”

“Love ya, too.”

The Abby/Alex saga. She’s something else. We’re not even a thing… at least not yet.

I hung up and went back to eating.

Hope you’re having a great day!

Alex sent this about one in the afternoon which was while I working, but an instant smile appeared on my face when I was able to read it a few hours later.

You too.

He responded a few minutes later.

Whatcha up to?

Not much. Just eating before I head into my next job.

The weekend can’t come faster. Can it?

You can say that again. I much rather would be having fun.

I’m sorry. Well, I hope the rest of the week goes well for ya.

Thanks.

I sighed and hit send. I continued to eat then begrudgingly went to work; I was so sick of working two jobs to only just barely scrape by and live. When I walked into the restaurant, there was already a long line as dinner was coming around and were going to be busy until later in the evening, maybe nine or ten pm. I was fine with this as it kept me busy; it also may have been my least favorite of the two because I would much rather be cooking than being a waitress. I don’t need to put on a fake smile when I cook, but now, I am at my job where I have to because if I don’t and act polite even if the customers are rude, I won’t get as many tips, if any at all. After putting my belongings in the back, I fixed my make-up and made sure I looked presentable before I headed out to the front dining room. The table I first had was my other amazing friends, Kendra and Brielle who were ones I made within six months of moving here. I had a genuine smile when I saw them.

"Hey, girl! Fancy seeing you here." Kendra greeted.

"Welcome ladies, what can I get you to drink?"

Like I didn't already know.

"A Coke."

"And I'll have a Sprite."

"I'll be right back."

When I came back with their drinks, I immediately got my pen out for their orders, but I got the feeling they wanted to talk about something else before they give me their dinner orders... someone else.

"Yes, Kendra?" I asked.

"You know what."

"I love you two, but you gotta spit it out."

"We wanna know if you heard from Alex since that first date."

"Yes. We're doing karaoke this weekend. I'm excited. I can't wait to see him again."

"And he clearly feels the same way." Brielle added.

"It appears so."

After I took their usual order and headed back, my head started to pound, but I could not let it stop from working; I cannot even afford to miss a day which is absolutely ridiculous. I powered through, and oddly enough, they were the best customers I had all night. My headache never went away or even eased up for that matter by the time I got out of work or when I laid my head at the end of my long ass day. But, my head was filled with the happiness at the response from Alex today.
