Thrive - Side 2

I Wish I Was With You

It turns out that Abby ended up being diagnosed with a mild concussion, but that did not stopped her from working; she only reduced her hours, but I didn’t feel comfortable about her working at all. Thank goodness that her concussion is gone but I am just going to continue to worry as per usual, even when she’s out with her best friend and niece on Black Friday.

“Hey.” I answered after three rings.

It was Abby.

“Hey.”

“What’s up?”

“I just got a huge phone call.”

“Who was it?”

“The police found out who hit me. You’re not gonna believe it.”

“Who?”

“My father.”

“Jesus fucking Christ. Please tell me you’re pressing charges.”

“I’m just gonna file a restraining order.”

“You gotta be kidding me. He tried to hurt you and he could’ve hurt Scarlett. He deserves at least a fine, for fucks sake.”

I was angry at her again which is a rarity for me.

“I only want him away from me, away from our family. This was directed at me, Alex. As long as I don’t see him again, that’s fine.”

“Abby, he needs to pay for what he’s done.”

Why won’t she just file charges? He’ll be out of our lives.

“I can’t deal with the legal system again. That first time was enough for me, I was a mess.”

She has to be right. Doesn’t she?

“Guess you got a point.”

“Of course I do.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“So, what are you up to now?”

“About to head into the mall with Miranda and Luca to do some Christmas shopping.”

“You think it’s gonna be crazy?”

“No. That’s why we avoided Black Friday. Hell, I’ve always avoided that day.”

“Well, have fun and tell Miranda and Luca, I said hi.”

“Will do. What’s going on with you?”

“About to head to lunch. So, I’ll let you go.”

“Ok. Have a good day.”

“You too. Bye.”

“Bye.”

I shook my head after I hung up. I crossed my fingers and hoped everything would turn out alright. I laid back into bed and thought for a moment before I made the better decision to get out of bed.
I needed an opinion from my best friend.

“Jack?” I said, walking toward the back room.

That’s when I heard voices… very familiar voices.

“He’s doing great. Might’ve been a pain this morning, but he’s been a dream ever since.”

“Hey, Abby says ‘hi’.”

There must have been a pause. I didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but their voices could be easily overheard.

“He says ‘hi’.”

“Would you like to talk to him?”

“Of course.”

“Hold on a sec.”

“Hi, Luca.”

He giggled.

“How’s my little man? You treating mommy okay?”

“I love you, Luca.”

I am so ready to be a dad and hearing Jack talk to his son is killing me. I walked away and opened the fridge to get a drink and sit down. I took a swig and opened up an article on my phone. When I heard the door open, I looked for a second then went back to my phone.

“Hey.” I said.

“Hey. I couldn’t help but hear you were on the phone with Miranda. How is she? Luca?”

“Amazing. Luca’s getting cuter by the day and Miranda is all smiles today.”

“That’s great. Do you think she’s found that engagement ring you bought?”

He bought it before we left with me to help him, of course, and it’s in the nursery hidden away.

“I don’t think so. I’m crossing my fingers that she didn’t find it.”

“When are you gonna ask her? Probably shortly after we get back.. the same day perhaps.”

“I’m so happy for you.”

He smiled.

“Thanks. I can’t wait. You think she’s gonna say yes?”

“That may just be the dumbest question you’ve ever asked me.”

He laughed.

“I have a question for you.”

“Of course. What’s up?”

“Abby found out who rear-ended her.”

“Who?”

“Her dad.”

“You gotta be fucking kidding me.”

He’s pretty damn overprotective of Abby as he is with Miranda.

“I wish I was. She’s not pressing charges either.”

“Why? That’s what I would do.”

“She’s gonna file a restraining order. She doesn’t think she can deal with the legal system again.”

“I don’t blame her. I can’t even imagine what she was went through.”

“Me either.”

Not much later, I received a text from Abby.

Found this gem today. What do you think about placing it in her nursery? Because I can’t imagine it not being there.

She inserted a picture with it which had a quote on it: I love you in the morning and in afternoon. I love you in the evening and I’m the afternoon.

I teared up, reading it.

I love it! Please buy it! It’s perfect.

I could not wait to hang it in our daughter’s room if her mother does not do it first.
