Thrive - Side 2

A Fatherless Baby Shower

The following Saturday is the day of Miranda’s baby shower and it’s at the same hotel where my birthday party was at. As joyous as the occasion is, neither Jack or me will have the pleasure of being there. It's roughly a month till he is due to arrive and those two are excited as they are nervous. Less than hour before her shower was set to start, Jack called her.

“Why you laughing?” I overheard him say.

I stood out of sight and listened to their conversation.

Pause.

He laughed as well.

“You know I really like that friend of yours. Can I talk to her?”

I smiled, knowing she was talking about Abby.

“Of course.”

“He wants to talk to you.”

“Hey, Jack.”

“Hey, Abby. I’d like to thank you again for being there for Miranda when I can’t be. It’s incredibly tough not being by her side like I should be.”

I honestly could not ask for a better best friend. As goofy as he is, he is such a caring person.

He smiled, listening to what she had to say.

“I’m gonna let you get back to the shower. I’m sure there are some final touches you need to do.”

“Ok. Talk to ya later.”

“You too.”

I decided to make an appearance when he hung up.

“Hey. How’s Miranda?”

“Mostly great, but she hates me not being there. Abby cheered her up by kissing her cheek and saying, ‘ Why so sad, sweet cheeks?’”

I laughed.

“That’s my girl. How did we find such amazing women?”

“That’s beyond me. I wouldn’t even have met Miranda if it weren’t for Abby. Could you imagine not having Abby? Because I know I couldn’t imagine not having Miranda.”

“I don’t like to think of that. I wasn’t even thinking about dating up until I met her. That’s just when I knew.”

An hour passed when I decided to call up Abby.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“How are you doing? How are things going?”

“Things are going well and I’m great.”

“Everybody love your food?”

Stupid question.

“Absolutely. There probably isn’t gonna be any leftovers.”

I have no doubts about that.

“That’s a guarantee. I fucking miss your food.”

“I bet you do.”

“Someone sounds cocky.”

“Well, you’re my favorite person to cook for, so I can say that.”

“You’re justified.”

“Exactly.”

I laughed.

“You got a point.” I agreed.

“Yes. I do.”

“Could you cook what you cooked for today when I get back? If you wouldn’t mind...”

Sure. I can find great food just about anywhere when we’re on tour, but absolutely nothing beats anything she cooks.

“Definitely.”

“Yes.”

She laughed.

“You’re awesome.” I said.

“Thanks, Alex.”

“My pleasure, Abby. Well, I’m gonna let you go.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.”

After the shower, Jack walked over and hugged me, taking me by surprise.

“What’s the hug for?”

“For the baby gift. Ravens and Redskins jerseys. Such a cool gift. Who came up with that idea? Your or Abby?”

“I’d like to take full credit, but credit goes to Abby. I just hope you guys’ kid picks the Ravens.” I said with a laugh.

“We can only hope. I heard the shower went well. She loved it.”

“I heard that, too. Everyone loved Abby’s food, especially Miranda, of course.”

“It’s impossible not to love her food.”

“You can say that again.”

By the end of the day, I was exhausted and wanted to hear about how the day went and it turned out wonderful, but I knew Abby was spent and only wanted to sleep. It was a relatively short talk, yet it was a fulfilling one as I had the best sleep yet.
