Thrive - Side 2

We’re Expecting

The following day is when Abby and I decided to announce her pregnancy. Prior to Abby leaving for work, we discussed telling my parents during her lunch break and agreed that would be a great time to tell them. Time seemed to pass quickly and I was waiting for her in the parking lot at where she works. I got out of the car as I saw her walking toward me.

“Hi, beautiful.” I greeted her.

“Hi.”

She stood on her toes and kissed me.

“How are you? Our little one?”

“We’re both good. I don’t have any nausea or much fatigue, but I’m still a bit sore. The sports bra is helping though even if it feels weird.”

“That’s good to know.”

I went in for a kiss which is one she melted into.

“I made you a lunch.”

“Thank you. You’re so sweet.”

“You do need to eat healthy after all, or at least healthy as possible, so I made you a lunch.”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

We walked toward my car and got in.

“Did you make yourself something?”

“Of course. It’s waiting for me in the car.”

As we sat in my car eating, I couldn’t stop thinking about what my parents’ were gonna say.

“What’s up?” I asked, noticing the look on her face.

“Nothin’.” she replied, drawing out the word.

She seemed to be thinking what I was thinking, but I decided to not bring it up.

I laughed.

“You sure?” I said doing the same thing.

“Yes.”

“Ok...”

“Shut up, you goof.”

I smiled and took another bite of my sandwich. Roughly fifteen minutes later, we were ready to FaceTime my parents.

“Hi, Alexander.”

“Hi, Mum.”

Abby waved and said hi.

“Hi, Abby.”

“I get to talk to the both of you. That’s rare.”

“Is it possible to have dad in on this phone call?”

“Absolutely. This sounds like big news.”

“Very.” she said.

She clung onto my arm as we waited for my dad.

“Hey, Dad.”

“Hey. Hey, Abby.”

She waved and greeted him.

“So, what’s this news you have?”

She and I smiled at each other before she grabbed the sonogram photo from the glove compartment.

“I’m pregnant!” she exclaimed.

“Oh my God!” I heard my mom squeal.

I kissed Abby’s cheek.

“When did you find out?”

“About five weeks ago.”

“How far along?”

“Ten weeks. I have my sonogram with me. Would you like to see it? It’d probably be better if I sent it.”

“How about you send it?”

She nodded and took a picture with her phone then sent it to my mom. Seconds later, I saw her melt when she looked at the pic.

“Our future grandchild...”

Abby placed her head on my shoulder and didn’t want to move.

“Did you tell your mom and her fiancée yet?”

“We’re gonna do that tonight after I get home from work.”

She didn’t move her head and I assumed it was because she was too comfortable.

“Are we talking to you during your lunch break?”

“Yeah.”

“You coulda waited to tell us. We’re cutting in on your break.”

“I don’t think I could’ve waited another day and the next day I have off is Sunday.”

“I understand. Still, I’m gonna let you go. Let me know your mother’s reaction. Ok?”

“Ok.”

We hung up seconds later and she sighed.

“Is somebody comfortable?”

“How’d you guess?” she asked, laughing.

“Just had a hunch.”

“As much as I love my job, I don’t wanna go back.”

“How much time you have left?”

“Seven minutes. I’m gonna have trouble concentrating because I’ll be thinking of telling my mom.”

“That’s a good motivator though. You gotta admit that.”

“It is.”

I wound an arm around her with a hand landing on her stomach and my head on top of hers. After four minutes, she began to move.

“Gotta go. I love you.”

“I love you, too. See you tonight.”

Abby kissed me and then reluctantly got out of the car. I waited till she went back into the restaurant before I pulled out of the parking lot. She came home that evening to see me watching television with the dogs on the couch. They jumped off as soon as they saw her.

“Hi, boys.” she said, getting greeted.

“Hey.” I said, standing up to greet me.

“Hey. How was your day?”

She went in for a kiss.

“Boring. How was yours?”

I kissed her back.

“Quick.”

“And painless?”

She shook her head and laughed.

“You’re so weird.”

“You love it.”

“I do.”

“Hey. I’m gonna change. I’ll be back.”

“I hope so.”

She shook her head again. She returned in pajamas and sat next to me on the couch.

“Ready to talk to her?” I asked.

“You have no idea.”

Abby called up her mom on FaceTime; she answered after a couple rings.

“Hi, honey.”

“Hi, Mom.”

“Hi, Alex.”

“Hi. Carol.”

“Where’s Tyler? I’d like to talk to him too.”

“Nearby. I’ll go grab him.”

Abby had trouble sitting still which was hilarious. She came back less than a minute later with him in tow.

“Got him. So, what’s up? Something must be going on if both of you are here.”

“Something is definitely going on.” Alex said.

“In my uterus. I’m pregnant!”

She held up her ultrasound photo. Her mom covered her mouth with her hands.

“I’m gonna be a grandmother?”

“Yes. That’s typically how it works, Mom.” she said, laughing.

She sent her the picture just like she sent my mom’s. Her mom smiled even more.

“How many weeks?”

“Ten. Found out four weeks ago.”

“This is so exciting!”

She set it aside and sighed.

“You okay, babe?”

“Yeah. Just tired.”

“I can let you guys go.”

“No.”

“Abigail.”

“Ok. Mother knows best.”

“And I’m sure you will too in a matter of months.”

I kissed her too.

“Goodnight, Mom.”

“Goodnight.”

She hung up and handed her phone to me who unlike her was wide awake.

“Ready for bed?” I asked.

“Nope.” she said, shaking her head.

“You’re lying.”

“No. I’m not.”

She got off the couch and took the ultrasound photo with her. She didn’t even make to the hallway when I wrapped my arms around her waist.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I whispered into her ear.

She giggled.

“I was gonna go to our bedroom.”

“Thought you said you weren’t ready for bed?”

“Well, I love our bedroom.” she sleepily said, turning around to face me and place her hands on my chest.

Then, she giggled again.

“You know, if you weren’t pregnant, I’d think you were drunk.”

She giggled even more and into my chest, this time. I picked her up and laid her down on our bed where she turned on her side and started to shut her eyes.

“Goodnight, Sleeping Beauty.” I said.

“Goodnight, Alex.”
