A New Beginning

This Feels Right

During a lazy Sunday afternoon, Alex called me and asked me out for dinner the following evening. I happily agreed and now, I'm standing in front of the bathroom mirror making sure I looked absolutely perfect. Iris knocked on the door.

“May I come in?” she asked.

“Of course.”

“You look absolutely beautiful. He’s gonna be speechless.”

“You think so?”

“Definitely.”

I insisted on meeting him, but he just wouldn’t have it, so now, I’m waiting for him to arrive. I understand though; we met at a bar and then headed to a pizza shop, plus we texted Saturday and he called me yesterday.

“I’ll get the door if I need to.”

“Ok.”

Five minutes later, I heard a knock on the door and I was still in my room. I heard her answer the door while I walked out of my bedroom.

“Hey. You must be Iris.”

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

I smiled and was soon beside her.

“You too.” he said, shaking her hand.

He then turned to me.

“Harper.” he said breathlessly.

“Alex.” I said smiling.

Iris backed away.

“You look stunning.”

I blushed and moved a lock of hair behind my ear.

“Thank you.”

“Anytime.”

I had a sudden urge to kiss him, but I resisted.

“Ready to go?”

"Yeah."

He instantly took my hand like we were already a couple, but I did not mind a bit; there's clearly a connection.

"I'll see you later, hun." I said.

"Have fun, you two."

"Don't you worry. We will." Alex said.

And off we went.

“So, where are we going?” I said, buckling my seatbelt.

“Somewhere better to eat than at a pizza shop.”

“What’s wrong with eating at a pizza shop?”

“Nothing, I'd just love for us to have a proper date at a nice restaurant."

"You have a point, a valid one."

Ten minutes later, we were at a much nicer restaurant and one I had been to only a couple of times; unfortunately, those two times were with my ex. I need to stop thinking about him when I'm on a date with someone new.

"So, what do you think?" he asked when we walked in.

"I love it. Their food is amazing.” I said the latter dramatically.

Alex proceeded to laugh. Once we gave his name, we were seated immediately and I went instantly to my menu. After we ordered our drinks, I heard my phone ring; I furrowed my eyebrows when I saw who it was. Kyle.

“Who is it?” Alex asked.

“My least favorite person.”

I hit decline.

“I’m trying not to think about him and here he is calling me when I’m out on a date. It was enough that I saw his new girlfriend at the gym yesterday. I don’t need this.”

“Did she speak to you?”

“On my way out, she began talking to me. She wanted to confirm who I was and told me what Kyle wanted to say.”

“What did the bastard want to say?”

“That... listen, can we talk about this later? It was two things, one of which brought me to tears.”

“Of course. I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay. I’d be curious too.”

“No. It’s not. I shouldn’t pry like that.”

“You’re too wonderful. Thank you.”

Then, my phone started to ring again. Him. Just hit accept.

“Hello?” I said irritatedly.

“Why didn’t you answer my first call?”

“Because I’m out with someone. Someone I like.”

“Is it a guy?”

“Does it really matter? You have a girlfriend.”

“Oh, so it is? Is he better looking than me?”

Seeing I was getting angry, Alex laid a hand on top of my clenched fist causing me to smile a little.

“As a matter of fact he is. Now, what do you want?”

“Just wanted to make sure you’re gonna show up tomorrow.”

“I am. I hate you and wanna get rid of you.”

I hung up and held in the urge to scream seeing as we were in a public place.

“Is everything okay?”

“He’s such an asshole. The main thing is that I’m gonna show up tomorrow for more divorce proceedings. I’m so sorry about it, by the way. I should’ve just let that go.”

“Harper. He was probably just gonna keep calling till you answered.”

“You’re right.”

"What can I do to get him off your mind?"

Kiss me.

Ugh. There's that thought again. It's too early for that.

"Just continue to be amazing."

He smiled.

"I'll try."

"It shouldn't be too hard."

I began smiling again and it felt wonderful. Our waitress came back and we placed our orders.

“What should we talk about because we spent over five hours the other night talking?” I asked.

I hadn’t been on a proper first date in so long or if you’d like to call it our second date and I had no idea what to talk about; it felt kind of weird to be quite honest.

“Are you nervous? Because you seem nervous.”

“A little. Don’t know why though. I’ve been on several dates before.”

“You were in an relationship with a guy for six years and married for three. I don’t blame you. To be quite honest, I’m nervous. Filing for divorce was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to deal with. This right now actually is one of the easiest things.”

“You’re certainly making this easier for me. Less painful.”

I honestly don’t think I’ve liked a guy more than Alex. He’s such a genuine and caring person as well as being a hilarious guy.

“Glad to hear that. Anyway, how was your weekend aside from you know what?”

“Really good. Had an overdue girls night with Iris on Saturday after a long week and a nice workout and yesterday, I just laid around because well, it’s a Sunday and watched Netflix.”

“Sounds nice. I’m pretty lazy myself on Sundays, but I enjoy hiking when I can.”

“Maybe I can join you sometime.” I said, biting my lip.

“I would love that.”

The rest of dinner went without any interruption of talks about exes, only the good that was going on in our lives, including the premiere of a new All Time Low video that I could not wait to watch. Before I could even open the car door, I realized that I couldn’t control the urge I had been having since Alex showed up at my door. I stood slightly on my toes and kissed him; as I was about to pull away, he turned us around and backed us into his car while our lips were still attached. Although I'm not one for pda, I proceeded to wrap my arms around his neck and his hands went straight to my hips. When we separated, I looked directly into his eyes.

"Alex?" I asked breathlessly.

He responded with another kiss.

"Sorry. I just couldn't help myself."

"For backing us into your car or that last kiss?"

He came up speechless.

"You don't need to apologize. I haven't been kissed like that in quite a while."

"You couldn't seem to control yourself either."

"I wanted to kiss you since you showed up tonight, actually."

"That long?"

"Well, I really like you."

“I really like you, too.”

“So, another date is in order.”

“Absolutely.”

We smiled at each other before allowing us to get into his car. When we got to Iris and I's apartment, I wasn't wanting to go inside; I wanted to stay with Alex.

"This fucking sucks. I don't wanna go inside." I said, pouting like a child.

Alex was clearly amused by this.

"But it's a school night. Right?" he said, laughing.

I gave him a look; he responded by pulling me in for a hug.

Fuck. He smelt good. Have I mentioned that yet?

“You’re right. I hope we plan on doing something again soon.”

“Like this weekend?”

“Like this weekend. Sounds perfect.”

I stood on my toes and kissed him. We quickly said our goodbyes and I locked the door behind me and turned out the lights before walking into my bedroom for a good night’s sleep.
