Alex’s POV
I woke up to the sound of my alarm and then not even a minute later my 7 year old sister came into my room who was closely followed by my 10 year old brother and I just got jumped on to wake me up.
I groaned loudly as I didn’t want to get up and go to school.
I felt someone tap my arm and I opened one eye and saw my sister Meredith looking at me with a smile on her face.
‘Good morning.’ Meredith signed which made smile as I signed good morning back to Meredith and my brother Noah.
Everyone in my family part from me was deaf, even though I should be deaf as well I somehow managed to miss the deaf gene.
I sat up which knocked Meredith off me which made her laugh and in a way it broke my heart that nobody else could hear her or Noah laugh.
‘Out, I need to sort myself out.’ I signed and they both ran out my room and thundering down the stairs for breakfast.
I crawled out of bed and had a quick shower and got dressed before I went down for breakfast.
Since everyone was deaf the house was always quiet so I would always put the radio on to help keep me sane a little.
I sorted my breakfast out and sat at the table and started to eat my breakfast while mum and dad had their silent argument about something but I couldn’t be bothered to find out what it was about.
I was eating my breakfast and sat on my phone looking at what drama has been happening on Facebook and like normal, nothing exciting happened so I closed Facebook and went onto Instagram.
I felt someone tap my shoulder and I looked up and saw dad which made me frown at him.
‘Can you take Meredith and Noah to school?” Dad signed and I shook my head.
‘I can’t, I’m going to be late for school.’ I signed and dad sighed loudly.
‘I can pick them both up after school.’ I signed and that made dad a little happier as he walked off and I looked at mum who smiled a thanks to me which I returned and mum walked out the kitchen and I got up and followed her.
I followed mum into the sitting room to tidy the mess what Meredith and Noah had made and I gently touched her arm which made mum jump and look at me.
‘Everything okay?’ I signed and mum nodded.
‘Yes, nothing for you to worry about.’ Mum said but I could tell something was wrong but I didn’t want to push it.
‘I’m going to school.’ I signed and mum nodded and turned her head so I could kiss her cheek which I did and walked out the room and picked my bag up and walked to school.
I got to school and went to my locker to get my books out when someone stood next to me going into their locker.
“Mate this school is way better than my last school.” The person said and I frowned to myself as I shut my locker door and looked at him.
“I’m sorry what?” I said in confusion.
“This place, it’s much better than the last school I was at. Like there’s no bars around the windows, no security guards watching your every move and I am free to go wherever I want to go.” The person said which made look at him wide eyed.
“Okay, so I’m going to walk away and have nothing to with you.” I said and the person chuckled as they shut the door and looked at me.
“Why? Afraid I’m going to hurt you? Don’t worry you have a pretty face and a nice ass so I’m not going to hurt such a pretty person.” The person said and I frowned at him really confused.
“Yeah, anyway I want nothing to do with you so I’ll see you around.” I said and I turned around to walk off but the person caught hold of my hand which made me look at the person and I had to admit he was cute.
“Today is my first day and nobody has really told anything or even showed me around, please tell me you aren’t a asshole like the rest of these cunts in this place because you’re face really isn’t like a cunt looking face.” The person said and I sighed loudly.
“Wow, I’m glad I don’t look like a cunt to you. But just because my face doesn’t look like a cunts face doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be a cunt.” I said and the person frowned at me.
I just signed fuck off to the person and turned around and walked off.
I was sat in English minding my own business and trying to work out what the fuck I was meant to write about this stupid book we was reading.
“So what’s the deal with this stupid book then?” A familiar voice said and I looked up and saw the person from earlier.
“For fuck sake, what do I have to do to get rid of you?” I said and the person chuckled slightly.
“Since I don’t know anyone in this place, I’m afraid you going to have to put up with me until I make my own friends.” The person said and I rolled my eyes.
“Oh lucky me.” I said sarcastically as I rested my head against my hand and looked at the person.
“So since you are going to be annoying me for a while I believe you need to tell me your name.” I said and the person chuckled.
“I’m Jack.” The person said and I nodded.
“Alex.” I said and Jack smiled at me.
“So I’m guessing that you are relying on me to show you around this place then.” I said and Jack nodded.
“Yes I am relying on you to help me learn the best escape routes are.” Jack said and I frowned at him which made Jack chuckle.
“Don’t worry, I’m a different person to what I was 6 months ago.” Jack said as he sat back in his chair.
“I want to ask but at the same time I really don’t want to know.” I said and Jack looked at me and smiled.
“You’ll find out soon enough.” Jack said as he got his stuff sorted and stood up and walked to the teacher and handed him a pass and then he walked out of the classroom.
I sighed loudly and went back to my work.
It was lunch when Jack showed his face again.
“The head wants to speak to you.” Jack said as he helped himself to whatever food was available.
“Seriously, what do I have to do these days to sneak a cigarette in.” I said and Jack looked at me.
“Goodie two shoes smokes?” Jack asked and I looked at him.
“For starters I’m not a goodie two shoes, you don’t understand how hard I have to work to make myself heard or to get the grades that I’m at.” I said seriously.
“Woah, no need to get onto your high horse I’m only messing.” Jack said and I scoffed and walked for to the field to have a cigarette before I went to the head.
Despite the fact it was raining I managed to find a tree out of anyone’s sight and was stood under it smoking.
I saw Jack walking over and I sighed loudly to myself.
“Jesus Christ your like a fucking leech.” I said and Jack frowned at me.
“Well I’m sorry I have no friends and your literally my only friend here.” Jack said as he started to smoke his cigarette and then the smell of weed hit my nose.
“Seriously? Getting high at school. What are you crazy or something?” I said and Jack chuckled.
“Ah come on it’s not like I dealing it or doing anything worse than smoking a joint.” Jack said and I rolled my eyes.
“We have a no drugs rule in this place.” I said and Jack shrugged his shoulders.
“The last place I was at, there was no drugs, smoking, touching others. Going outside was a privilege and if you were t good enough then you would get a good beating. Trust me when I can make the most of having a joint at school I’m going to take it.” Jack said and I frowned at him.
“What the fuck did you do to be in a school like that?” I asked and Jack chuckled.
“Now I’m not sharing that story.” Jack said and I raised a eyebrow.
“Fair Enough. Anyway I need to go to speak to the head.” I said and walked back towards the school.
I got to the heads office and knocked on the door and just walked in and the head looked at me.
“You wanted to speak to me.” I said as I walked over to the chair and sat down.
“I see you met Jack.” The head said and I scoffed.
“Wouldn’t exactly call it met him more along the lines of him following me around like a lost dog. So thanks for the heads up for that.” I sarcastically.
“You need to understand that Jack is a very troubled student.” The head said and I raised a eyebrow at him.
“Aren’t we all troubled? I mean I think half the students in this place are self harming or have some sort of mental health problem. We are all troubled in our own way.” I said as I stood up.
“Alex, I need you to keep an eye on Jack for me.” The head said and I looked at him confused.
“Why? Why not one of the goodie two shoes. I’m probably just as bad a Jack.” I said as I walked over to a desk and sat on it.
“Because I think the goodie two shoes would piss Jack off more, he needs someone who is on the same level as him.” The head said and I scoffed.
“Please, I’m no where near on the same level as Jack, I mean what he has told me it sounds like he was in jail for something. I never been to jail if anything I’m just the translator for my family.” I said and the head sighed.
“Alex, you are a good lad and a good role model of this school. But at the same time you are also one of the most trying students in this place. I believe that with your help Jack can be like you.” The head said and I rolled my eyes.
“You think I’m not under enough pressure? Christ I have so much going on outside of school and I can’t have someone like Jack following me around. So just give him to one of the goodie two shoes and tough shit if he gets pissed off.” I said as I got off the desk.
“Jack has already admitted that he likes you so you are just going to have to suck it up.” The head said and I just rolled my eyes.
“Fine, But you have to tell me why Jack was in the last school he was at.” I said as I walked over to the heads desk.
“Jack can be violent and has a short fuse.” The head said and I sat back in my chair.
“Oh that’s fucking fantastic.” I said sarcastically.
“Just give him a chance Alex. I think Jack will listen to you if he does lose control.” The head said and I shook my head.
“So you want me to be his punch bag? Yeah that’s not happening sunshine. Had my fair share of rough relationships and I’m not going through it again.” I said seriously and the head smiled.
“I don’t want you to be his punch bag. I want you to be the person Jack can trust to come to if he feels like he’s loosing it. Anyway I know that if Jack was to lay a hand on you then you would punch him back and put him back in his place.” The head said and I chuckled slightly.
“You’re not meant to be encouraging violence.” I said and the head shrugged his shoulders.
“I know Jack will flip soon and he will need someone to put him back in his place and I know that you are the best person for it.” The head said and I just sighed loudly.
