Catch Me

What a Feeling This Is

I dressed as nice as I could. I hadn’t gone out on a date since I was twenty and I was unsure about it. That turned into a nearly one year long relationship that almost killed me... literally. I was dating this guy named Mike and he was the sweetest guy I had ever met. Things went well for the first eight months; he was chivalrous and couldn’t be a better guy and was always there when I needed him. Then, he got into drugs and alcohol and turned into a monster. I was scared for my life and didn’t know what to do.

One night, I had gone to the apartment to breakup with him. He answered the door immediately.

“Hey babe.”

“Hey Mike. I-um-need to tell you something.”

“What is it?” he said wiping his nose.

He had obviously been snorting coke shortly before I arrived.

“I can’t do this anymore.”

“What? Why the fuck not?!”

“I can’t deal with the drinking and the drugs anymore.”

He began to laugh.

“You’re funny.” he said laughing.

“I’m serious.”

He grabbed a hold of me and pushed me against the wall.

“Wanna say that again, bitch?”

I cried.

“Mike. Can’t we talk about this?”

He slammed my head into the wall.

“No.”

“I can’t do this anymore!”

I struggled to get away as he put a gun to my head.

“Wanna think again?”

I struggled a little more and got away from him and ran toward the door. He tripped me as I was a foot away.

“Come on, Riley. Let’s talk.” he said sickenedly sweet.

“Stop it!”

That’s when I felt a bullet hit me in the chest.

“Now, what do you say?”

I could hardly say anything.

“Go. Fuck. Yourself.” I said pressing a hand to my chest and struggling to grab my phone out of my pocket.

“I’m just gonna take this.” he said trying to take my phone.

“No!”

I tripped him and called 911.

It was a miracle I survived. He got major jail time and I was free. This is why I turned to sleeping around. I was too scared of what could happen in a relationship, so having sex with several men over three years gave me the satisfaction and not any drama. Now, I was feeling better and ready to start anew. Zack seems like a great guy; I know his background and what he does for a living. I’m still nervous as hell though. He arrived only a few minutes after six-thirty.

“Hey Riley. You look so beautiful tonight.”

I blushed.

“Thank you.” I said placing a piece of hair behind my ear.

“My pleasure. So, ready to go?”

“Yes. Yes, I am.”

He smiled as I shut and locked my door.

“You know, Mr. Merrick. You look rather dashing tonight.”

He laughed.

“Thank you, Miss...”

“Miss Paulson.”

He nodded.

“My pleasure.” I said, trying not to laugh.

I loved this. I was having a great time already. After we ordered our drinks and food, we really got to talking.

“So, Riley. What do you do for a living?”

“Nothing special. Just a bank teller. Not as interesting as being in a band.”

“It’s not exactly easy as fun as it is. A lot of work is involved.”

“Still. Does sound awesome though.”

“Have you been interested in music?”

“I love music. It’s a huge part of my life outside of work aside from my friends, but I grew up being an athlete.”

A smile appeared on his face.

“What sport did you play?”

“I played soccer elementary school and the whole way through high school. I was also involved in track.”

I was smiling from ear-to-ear.

“Hold any records?”

“In track, I do.”

“That’s cool.”

“Where-“

We were interrupted by our waitress handing us our dinners and I also noticed someone who I had once slept with; he was looking at me and I imagined he was walking back to his booth.

“Hey Riley.”

“Hey.”

“Don’t remember my name. Do you?”

“No. Why would I?”

“Yeah. You wouldn’t, would you? With all the people you’ve slept with, you whore.”

“I’m not a whore! Go away.” I began to tear up.

“Sorry buddy. Sorry I spoiled your date.” he said to Zack.

He walked away and I tried to regain my composure.

“Riley?”

“No...”

“Riley, please talk to me.”

“Why would you wanna talk to me after that?”

“Everyone has a past and I still like you.”

“So, you wanna hear about it?”

He nodded.

“I’ve never wanted to talk about it since I never thought I’d be going out on another date or whatever again. When I was twenty-two, I met this guy named Mike who just graduated from college. He was such a nice guy until eight months into our relationship. He got into drugs and alcohol and it wasn’t too long until I got fed up and went to his apartment to break up with him. He wasn’t having it. Hell, he didn’t take me seriously the first time I told him that. He ended up shooting me in the chest, but I managed to call 911 and somehow, I survived; I wasn’t supposed to. They say it was a miracle. Since then, I’ve avoided any type of romantic relationship because I didn’t want to deal with any type of drama. So, I’ve resorted to sleeping around for the past three years. Things changed however when I met you. Thank you.” I said choking through tears.

He moved from his side of the booth to mine and wrapped an arm around my waist; I laid my head on his shoulder as he took my hand in his.

“This is nice.” I said getting cozy.

I smiled and my heart lifted.

“Our food’s getting cold.” I said.

“That’s okay.” he said laughing.

“No. It’s not. I’m one hungry woman.” I laughed.

“Alright. Let’s eat.”

He pushed his food and drink to my side of the table and I moved over so we could eat.

“You’re sweet. You know that?”

He blushed. I was tempted to kiss his cheek, but I controlled myself.

“Before we were interrupted, I was gonna ask you where you grew up.”

“Well, far from Hawaii. I grew up in Wisconsin.”

“And the opposite climate. Why the move?”

“There wasn’t much for me there and I’ve been here multiple times on vacation and I love it. I thought it was perfect.”

“That had to have been hard though.”

“Extremely, but it just felt right. You know? I miss them like crazy. My two younger sisters and my mom and dad.”

“Four girls in one house. Wow.”

“Yes. A lot of estrogen and mood swings. My sisters and I are really close though. Anyway, there’s something I’d really like to know. Did you really keep my number?”

“I inadvertently memorized it, then destroyed it. I didn’t want her to find it, but I couldn’t get you off my mind.

It was my turn to blush. Dinner couldn’t have gone better and I didn’t want the night to end, but I had to; I had work in the morning.

“I had a great time. I just hate that I have to work tomorrow. It’s a very boring job.”

“Me too and I’m sure tomorrow will go fast.”

“Maybe we can go out sometime this week. Preferably when I don’t have work the next day.”

“I would absolutely love that.”

“Go out sightseeing or something like that.”

“Perfect.”

I hugged him and he hugged me back.

“See ya soon, Riley.”

“You too, Zack.”

When he left and knew he was out of earshot, I sat down against the door and squealed. I was so fucking happy and no one could take that away from me.
