Take A Breath And Let The Rest Come Easy

Off To Neverland

*Alex Pov*

I left Jack's house and ran home. As soon as I walked in, I was ambushed with questions.

"Alexander William Gaskarth! You were supposed to be home a half an hour ago!" I winced at her shouting.

"S-sorry, Mom. We lost t-track of the time," I stammered. I don't normally stutter when I talk to my mom, but her yelling was making me nervous. She must have noticed.

"I'm sorry, honey. I didn't mean to yell at you. I was just worried. This is a new city, and I didn't know if you got lost or something. Not to mention, you didn't answer your phone." I went and sat on the couch next to her. "So, how was it at Jack's?"

"It was fun. His mom made cookies, we played video games, played some guitar, and then watched some movies." I listed, smiling.

"Sounds like fun."

We watched TV for a bit, and then I went to bed.

*The next week*

Pre-camp had flown by, my mom had gotten to meet Jack, and I was now packing for away band camp. I made sure I had enough clothes for the week (and then some), all of my bathroom stuff that I wouldn't need in the morning, a few different beanies, four different hoodies, two pairs of shoes, and enough snacks to last me the week. My mom came into my room holding a packed draw-string bag.

"Ok, I have sunscreen, aloe vera, bug spray, a flashlight, and extra batteries stuffed in here," she said, handing me the bag. "Oh, there is also band-aids, chapstick, and money in the front zipper pocket." I thanked her and continued trying to fit my clothes into only half of my suitcase. We're only allowed to have one suitcase and a bedroll, so I had to fit a weeks worth of clothes, a weeks worth of towels, my shower stuff, and any other miscellaneous things I needed in my suitcase.

I was excited to say the least. As much as I hate band camp, I love it. It's always one of my favorite summer activities. I might be a bit more excited since I found out that Jack, Rian, and Matt were in the same cabin as me. Something told me that this was going to be a week to remember. Eventually, I finished packing what I could, took my meds, and went to bed.

It was storming, the power was out, and I couldn't fall asleep, so I decided to see what Tom was up to. I knocked on his door, but there was no answer. I decided to go in anyway.

"Tom." No answer. "Tom," I called again, slightly louder. Still nothing. He must be asleep. I tried to shake him awake. "Tom, wake up." Still nothing. That's strange. "Tom. Get up." I shook him harder. He rolled on his back. "Tom?" I shook him slightly lighter. Through the dim light coming through his blinds from the streetlight, I could tell his chest wasn't moving. "Tom!" I yelled and began shaking him again. Nothing. "Tom. Wake up! This isn't funny!" I felt my eyes start to water. I ran to get my phone off it's charger in my room. I dialed 9-1-1.

"Hello, what is your emergency?"

"My brother, he's not breathing!" I started crying. "You have to help me!"

"What is your address?" I choked out my address through my sobs and ran back to Tom's room. I called my mom at work.

"Alex? Why-"

"Tom isn't breathing!" I cut her off. "I called 911, but - I can't - wake him up!" I sobbed.

"I'm on my way home."

Within minutes the paramedics arrived. They loaded him into the back and called my mom to tell her to meet them at the hospital. They made me sit in front.

My mom and I had to sit in the waiting room when they first got him there. I couldn't stop crying. My mom was trying so hard not to cry, but the thought of possibly losing Tom was too much and she cracked. After what seemed like forever, they let us in. He was still unconscious, but he was breathing. We sat by him, thankful that he was ok. I was so tired that I finally fell asleep. However, I was woken up by an erratic beeping noise. I looked up and saw that my brothers monitor was going crazy. I screamed for help, but no one seemed to be coming quick enough. Then I heard the long beep that signaled a flat line. I began screaming and crying. "NO, NO, NO, NO, NO. TOM!" I just kept screaming the same thing over and over.

I jumped and woke up to a dark room. I was still sobbing. Another nightmare. I had gone a couple weeks without having one, so I thought they had stopped. This is not a good time for them to start back up. I looked at the clock. It was 5 a.m. I had to get up in an hour to get ready and finish packing. Ugh. Hopefully I can get an hour of peaceful sleep.

I woke up at 6 and got in the shower. I took an obnoxiously long shower in order to kill some time. After about 20 minutes I decided I should probably get out and get ready. I dressed in my gray skinny jeans and a black plaid shirt. I dried and straightened my hair, and then left my straightener on the counter so it could cool off before I had to pack it. I went downstairs and my mom already had breakfast waiting for me.

"I packed your meds and your bed stuff while you were showering."

"Thanks, Mom."

"Are you excited?"

"Actually, I am. Jack is in my cabin, so at least I'll have one person to talk to."

"Well, that's good. And you better call me everyday, mister. I like to know what's going on."

"I will. Are you coming up on Thursday for family day?"

"Of course! And if you'd like, I can bring you some real food too."

I nodded and finished eating. I was putting my dishes away when I heard my phone ringing upstairs. Who on earth would be calling me this early?

Incoming Call: Jack

How did I not see that coming?

"Hello?"

"Hey, Lex. I texted you, but you didn't answer."

"Sorry, I was eating breakfast. What's up?"

"What time do we have to be at the school again?" I laughed.

"8 o'clock. We leave at nine."

"Ok. Thanks. I wasn't sure. Haha, section leader of the year over here." I giggled under my breath.

"I have to finish packing, so I'll see you at school. Bye, Jack."

"See ya, Lex."

I swear that boy would forget his head if it weren't attached. By the time I finished packing and double checking everything, it was already 7:30. I had just enough time to clean my trombone and make sure my lyre had all of my music in it. About 15 minutes later I was loading all of my things into my mom's car, and we were on our way to the school. When we pulled up, a bunch of people already had their things in piles by the curb where the busses would be picking us up. I easily found Jack among the crowd of people. He was running away from Matt, holding what I presume was Matt's beanie. I don't know how they have so much energy in the morning. I unloaded my stuff and said goodbye to my mom.

"Alex!" I looked and saw Jack waving me over to his group of friends. I dropped my stuff in the pile. A very tired and out of breath Matt was laying on the base of the grass hill.

"Hey, where do we put meds and st-tuff?"

"Here, I'll show you." Jack grabbed my arm and pulled me into the band room. He pointed to a box on the table.

"Oh. Thanks." I deposited my meds, and then felt myself being pulled back outside.

"How on earth d-do you have s-so much energy this early?"

"How do you not?!" He exclaimed with a giant grin on his face.

"He gets like this every year before band camp. It's kind of ridiculous," Rian explained. "I don't think there's enough Starbucks on the planet to wake me up enough to deal with his hyperness this early." I chuckled.

"Rian, just sit there and drink your coffee. Jack can be hyper if he wants. You're just crabby from lack of sleep," Cassadee interrupted.Soon enough all of our friends had joined us on the hill. Now we just had to wait for Gerard to take attendance and let us get on the bus. Eventually the band trailer was packed, and all of us were on busses. Jack and I decided it would be easier to stack all of our stuff in one seat and sit together in another. I sat down and put one headphone in so I could listen to the conversations around me. I could already tell that this was going to be an amazing week.

Notes

I meet All Time Low in one week. I'm so excited!
