Radio Silence

Part 13: Looking For Something

After her dad told her about her sister, Riley became determined to find her sister. She wanted to meet her, see what she looked like, and maybe find out if she was deaf too. The only problem was she knew nothing about her, not even her name. She thought about getting a blood test and seeing if she could at least find that out so she’d have a way to start her search; however, she wasn’t a huge fan of needles. She considered that a last resort.

Riley had been on the computer for a few hours in her room when Iggy nudged her until she paid attention and then looked at the door signalling someone was here. She got up and walked down the stairs to open the door where she saw Alex stood with two Starbucks cups. Alex had gotten them both a hot chocolate and she smiled in thanks, moving to the side and opening the door wider for him to come inside.

“Hi,” Alex smiled and greeted, leaning forward to peck Riley on the lips. He handed her one of the cups carefully, petting Iggy to acknowledge her excited demeanor. “How are you?”

Riley gave him a look that said everything. She looked fed up with whatever she had been doing before Alex came along to surprise her with the hot drinks. To emphasize her frustration, she did what she always saw other people do and sighed loudly, making Alex laugh softly.

He closed the door behind him as Riley started going back into the house and straight to the kitchen. As much as she wanted to find her sister, taking a break wouldn’t do any harm. That was, of course, if she wasn’t going to move out of the country in the next couple of minutes. You never knew what other people were doing, what strangers were doing. There were people getting the best news of their lives, others feeling like their life was crumbling into pieces, and some just getting on with their day. It always baffled Riley. Just months before, when she had seen the shaggy brown haired man at his mailbox one morning she wondered the same thing about him. Now she was a part of his life, and she hoped to do the same with her sister.

“So, what’s up?” Alex asked and leaned against one of the kitchen counters as Riley sat down at the breakfast bar opposite of him.

‘Trying to find my sister,’ she signed after taking a long sip from her drink and putting it down, ‘but I have no idea where to start.’

“You’re actually trying to find her right now?” His eyes widened in surprise.

‘I need to know who she is. I’ve gone my entire life not knowing I even had a sister and now that I know I have to meet her,” She wrote down so Alex didn’t have to worry about trying to understand everything.

“That makes sense. Is there anything I can do to help?”

“I’m not sure right now. Maybe just provide moral support and coffee.”

“I can do that.”

And so he did. He stayed there for hours keeping the coffee machine on. He even had to run to the store to buy more coffee grounds because they had run out. Alex wanted to make this relationship work as best he could, even though there’s absolutely no point. In his mind if being with Riley means doing nothing but rubbing her back when she gets frustrated or bringing her mug after mug full of coffee, he would do it. He’d bend over backwards for her if he has to.

Riley eventually gave up on using the internet. She wasn’t getting any answers from there so she decided to facetime her dad, thinking that even if he knows nothing about her he at least knows her name. And she was right, he did know her name. Well, her first name but it was somewhere to start her search.

It was 9pm before Riley got off the computer figuring she could resume her search tomorrow. She walked over to the couch where Alex was sitting with Peyton and Sebastian on his lap and Iggy at his feet. She smiled and curled up next to him.

“Find anything?” Alex said looking at her.

“Not really. All I have is her first name. My dad doesn’t remember her mother’s surname and even if he did she could be married by now.” Riley wrote in response.

“That makes sense.”

For the rest of the night Riley and Alex watched tv with the dogs exchanging lazy kisses here and there and went they walked upstairs to go to bed Alex gazed at Riley wondering how he got so lucky to find someone as amazing as Riley. It was moments like these that reminded him of how he fell so madly in love with her. For the first time, he felt as though he had a fairy tale-esque happy ever after.

Stupid boy, thinking that it was going to be that easy.

It's definitely an idea if she continues to pursue her search. :)

I am still here and reading! I was surprised to see a notification for this, haha, but happy to see that it's possibly being picked back up again.
Hmm... maybe Riley can do one of those DNA tests where you find out your ancestry, origins, etc., and find her sister that way? Fun fact, my cousin did one of those and found a long lost half sister him and his parents didn't even know about. Apparently they do like a database on people who do them and idk, you're able to find other current living relatives, even long lost siblings. XD
Great job with the update, though. Not much happened, so not much to report on, but it was sweet how Alex was there for her. :)
Interested in seeing more. <3
