A Story to Tell Your Friends

Thirty-Three.

“We need to have words,” I stated, pointing at my best friend as she looked up at me from the sofa. Jack was following behind me and Chris was sat next to Tammy on the sofa, the pair of them watching something or other on the TV.
“You weren’t kidding,” Chris said, looking behind me at Jack briefly before raising his eyebrows at Tammy. She rolled her eyes, shaking her head.
“Jack, this is Chris, my boyfriend. Chris, this is Jack, Clara’s boyfriend. Keep each other company.” She stood up quickly as she introduced the pair, before leading me into our kitchen and folding her arms. She didn’t seem annoyed, but I figured she knew what I was about to complain at her about.
“You’ve been talking to Jack about me,” I stated, waiting for her to react.
“I did say ‘if he isn’t in love with you, I don’t know what love is’, and I was right, wasn’t I?” She turned away briefly, refilling the coffee machine and dragging mugs out of the cupboard for the four of us. “Besides, I had to hate him for your sake until he was being unbelievably cute.”
“’Unbelievably cute’?”
“It wasn’t just Lisa he was calling at stupid hours of the night trying to figure you out. I had more than my share of calls at 1am asking my opinion on shit. Last night was his backup plan, so he’s been planning that little declaration for weeks. Ever since you cut him off trying to say it on the phone after your birthday.” The pointed look she gave me as she finished her sentence made me gulp. Obviously she knew I’d been keeping what had happened that night from her, probably finding out from Jack himself, or even Lisa.
“Wait, hold on. What do you mean I ‘cut him off’ on the phone? What are you talking about?” Tammy sighed, rolling her eyes again, seemingly annoyed by how stupid I was being.
“When you called him and he thought you were taking back your ‘I love you’? He tried to tell you then but you basically told him to shut up so you could tell him to leave you alone.” I blinked slowly, trying to remember the conversation. “You’re a shit person, frankly, so I don’t know why we put up with you, but you got tonnes of attention out of it.” I scowled at her joke, beginning to piece together Jack and I’s conversation that morning.
Oh my God,” I gasped. “I totally cut him off! I’m such an ass.” My eyes widened as I realised neither of them were exaggerating. Tammy chuckled lightly, patting me on the shoulder in faux reassurance.
“It’s okay, we still love you.”
“Why do you let me walk around acting like a dick to everyone?” I asked her, becoming annoyed with myself. I could have gotten over this weeks ago had I just let him explain himself on the phone that day. Or, better yet, not sneaked out of his apartment before he woke up. I grabbed two cups of coffee, taking them through into the living room, where Chris was still looking a little star struck and Jack was sitting awkwardly on the armchair under the window. I went over, passing him his cup and sitting on the arm of the chair, Tammy following not far behind.
“You look annoyed. What’s up?” Jack asked quietly, as Tammy tried to engage Chris in real conversation again, which he gratefully accepted as a way of distracting himself from Jack’s presence. Any other time, I would have been laughing at the reaction, but I was still pissed off at myself.
“I’m an asshole,” I responded, just as quietly.
“News to me, but go on.”
“Why do you let me ruin everything?” I sighed, looking at him. He dropped the smile he’d planted on his face to calm me, looking confused.
“You don’t ruin anything, Clara.”
“Clearly, I do,” I huffed. “You tried to tell me you loved me three weeks ago, and I interrupted you like a dick.” Jack relaxed, realising what I was talking about and chuckling quietly.
“What did you want me to do? Talk over you?”
“Yes.”
“Okay, next time, I’ll just keep talking until you shut up.” I cracked a smile at his words, relaxing a little myself.
“Great. I’m glad that’s all settled.” I leaned back against the chair, taking a sip of my coffee as my phone buzzed in my pocket. “Why is your sister following me on Twitter?!” I screeched, staring at my phone, panicking. I’d never even spoken to the girl, and she was going to see my weird online account of myself? Definitely not the impression I wanted to give Jack’s family. The three of them stared at me for my outburst, but I was busy staring at my phone screen and seeing his sister’s name in my notifications.
“Breathe, Clara,” he laughed, seeing my eyes widening. “She’s not going to flip out that you spent three weeks abusing me, she already knows and she already thinks you’re perfect for me. It’s fine.”
“No, not fine. Tell him, Tammy!”
“Why? Marky follows Jack.” Jack choked a little on his coffee, staring at Tammy.
“Well, there go all my inappropriate jokes I want to make about you.” I snorted, realising that only yesterday Jack had made a joke about the two of us having sex and that my brother had seen it first-hand. I was beyond glad he lived a thousand miles away.
“You guys are definitely not what I expected,” Chris piped up.
“Why? Didn’t you know Jack Barakat was a giant nerd who had the hots for your girlfriend’s roommate?”
“I don’t ‘have the hots’ for you, Clara.”
“Well, you have something for me.” Tammy snorted from the other side of the room
“I thought I was the one who made dick jokes in this relationship.”
“Does it make you hot for me?”
“Oh, totally.”
“Now that’s more like I expected,” Chris chuckled. “I anticipated dick jokes and immaturity, not swooning and declarations of love.” I raised my eyebrows at him at the ‘declarations of love’ comment. Chris had never expressed an interest in any band member’s personal life so far as I knew, but he was a fan of their music.
“Okay, I may have found a good recording from last night and tweeted it at everyone I’ve ever met in my life,” Tammy told me, smiling meekly. I shook my head. I should have known she would be the one to tell everyone we’d ever met. “Oh. Michaela sends her, remarkably begrudging, well wishes. She does, however, want me to let you know he’s still her future baby daddy.”
“Yeah, I’m never introducing you to Michaela,” I told Jack, who looked stupidly confused. “She’s like Tammy, but she actually does want to screw your brains out. I’m pretty sure she’s tried before at some concert in Seattle, but she didn’t get very far.” I laughed lightly, remembering Tammy telling me the story of Michaela flirting like we’ve never known before when she ran into him post-show a couple of years ago.
“Oh, my God, I totally forgot!” Tammy said, laughing along with me. “Your face was beyond hilarious. I think this was when you were with whatever she’s called, the Playmate, and Kayla wasn’t taking no for an answer.” Now it was my turn to choke on my coffee, staring wide-eyed at Tammy.
“What do you mean Playmate?”
“She wasn’t a Playmate,” Jack muttered, “she was just a Bunny, and not even when we were together.” I swung my head around to look at him, before turning back to Tammy, still wide-eyed. Jack and I had never gone deep into previous relationships, so it wasn’t as if he’d been hiding anything from me, but, really? He dated a model. Not just any model, Playboy model, and then he moved on to me? It didn’t exactly play out in my head.
“Oh, come on Clara, you knew about this. I told you about this in college.”
“Like I remember all the All Time Low trivia you spew at me.”
“It was years ago and, clearly, Jack’s tastes have changed since then.”
“Yeah, but, going from dating models to dating me?”
“Clara, you’re gorgeous, shut up.”
“I’m gonna have to butt in and agree here. Besides, you’re funnier than Holly and I love you, I never loved her,” Jack told me. I pursed my lips, narrowing my eye, still not sure exactly what the drastic change in preferences stemmed from.
“I don’t doubt that, I just don’t see why, or how, you’ve gone from someone so pretty they get paid to have their photograph taken, to some dick who barely manages to brush her hair some days.” Tammy snorted from across the room (Chris now looking insanely awkward at the conversation, hardly knowing where to look, except that he was trying his best not to look at Jack and I). She knew better than anyone how much of a slob I was when I had nowhere to go, so of course she was amused by my statement.
“I like my girls lazy and a pain in the ass,” he assured me. I cracked a smile and he pulled me from the arm of the chair onto his lap, securing his arm around my waist. “Plus, when I start rambling about games and music you don’t look at me like I’m speaking Chinese or something.”
“You’re definitely not speaking English,” Tammy told him. “Either of you. You make no sense when you start talking at each other.” I stuck my tongue out at her as Jack’s chest rumbled behind me.
“I’m totally his dream girl,” I nodded. “I speak Chinese and I’m lazier than any other girl in the world.”
“And a pain in everyone’s ass.”
“And bat shit crazy,” I agreed.
“Yeah, you definitely sound like my dream come true,” Jack laughed. I grinned brightly, kissing Jack on the cheek swiftly while Tammy and Chris laughed at the pair of us.
