A Story to Tell Your Friends

Ten.

“Tam-a-lam! Boo-boo! I’m home!” I shrieked, throwing my bag on the table by the door and kicking off my shoes, prompting Jack to do the same.
“Oh, my God, Clara, you are in so much trouble!” I heard Tammy shout from down the hall. A door opened as she started talking and I heard her moving ever closer. “I can’t believe you went home with Jack Barakat of all people! Do you know what kind of a reputation that boy has? I mean, he was nice and all, and yeah I always used to have a crush on him, but really, Clara, are you kid- oh. Hi, Jack.” Tammy threw a glare at me when she stopped short, noticing Jack, and I grinned sheepishly. “Why didn’t you tell me we had company?”
“Because how else was I supposed to utterly humiliate you?” Her eyes narrowed further at my joke. “Okay, sorry! I didn’t know you were going to tell me that you had a giant crush on him! I always thought I had dibs.”
“I don’t have a giant crush on him. Really, Jack, I don’t. I did as a teenager, but I also had a giant crush on Bam Margera as a teenager.” I saw her back herself up and tried not to laugh. She’d had a crush on every member of All Time Low at some point or other, and I’d always figured Alex had been her favourite overall, so I hadn’t expected her to say what she’d said.
“Okay, fine, I’ll stop mocking you. I only brought him home so he could prove to you that he’s not a psycho and so you won’t shout at me if I have any more impromptu sleepovers.” I saw Jack raise his eyebrows and smirk at my final comment but chose to ignore it so Tammy wouldn’t start freaking out again. It was the last thing I needed, especially after Jack had already witnessed my own semi-meltdown earlier in the day.
“I’m going to need some serious bribing if you want me to be on board with this,” she stated, pointing between the two of us. “And the things I’ve heard about you had best not be true.” She turned her glare to Jack as she said it and I rolled my eyes. I had no idea what she’d heard, but I’m sure the vast majority of it wasn’t true.
“Trust me, you’re not the only one who’s keeping an eye on me,” Jack stated, attempting to smile. I knew he was referring to Lisa and reminded myself that at least it wasn’t just my friends who were acting weird.
“Are we done now?” I asked, rolling my eyes. “You two are being dramatic and I was hoping we could have a nice chilled out day while I recover from my hangover.” I wrapped my arm around Jack’s waist and pouted at the two of them.
“Fine, but Sunday means cheesy films and junk food. And we have no junk food.” Tammy faux glared at me and I feigned innocence, ignoring the fact that I had a bin in my bedroom full of crisp packets and chocolate wrappers. I pretty much ate junk instead of meals when I was in on a night. Sue me.
“How about I go grab some food and you go get a shower?” Jack suggested.
“I don’t think so. I think you’ve bought enough crap for me over the last week,” I told him. He raised his eyebrows at me. “I’m gonna give you twenty bucks, you’re going to buy me some junk food. Okay?” He laughed slightly, nodding and agreeing.
“So, you’re sure nothing happened?” Tammy asked me, fifteen minutes later when I sat down in my sweatpants with wet hair.
“I’m positive. I mean, we kissed this morning, but it’s not a big deal,” I shrugged. Jack was still at the store and had been texting me asking what mine and Tammy’s favourite snacks were.
“You did?!” She squealed, eyes lighting up a little.
“Yeah, he burned my hands with coffee and decided to make a move while checking on me,” I laughed.
“I don’t know if that’s cute or creepy.”
“Cute. Very cute.”
“Well, he seems nice enough. I didn’t mean to freak out on you this morning, you do know that, right?” Tammy said after a little pause. “You just hear stuff, you know? And I didn’t want you getting hurt.”
“I’m a big girl, Tam. I know he’s leaving in a couple of weeks and I know what guys in bands can be like. I’m not as naïve as you think I am.”
“I know, I know. Lisa told me you’d spent the night there when she called this morning freaking out. She told me a couple of things about how most of the guys used to be. She did tell me she thought he really liked you though, that you seemed different to other girls.” I blushed a little, ignoring whatever it was Lisa had told her. So Jack had a past, who cares? If he’s a bit of a player, I’m sure I’ll figure that out on my own, in my own time.
“Can you do me a favour, though? I need you to stop freaking out when Jack’s around. He heard you this morning, and I think we both just wanna take this slow. See how things work out on their own, you know?” Tammy nodded, smiling apologetically. “We just need to have a nice day today and you can make your mind up from there. And when did you even get Lisa’s number, anyway?”
“Last night, idiot. I gave her my number before I left the bar so she could call me if she needed anything, or if you guys needed picking up.” I rolled my eyes. It was typical Tammy. She goes home for a semi-early night and still leaves herself open to being woken up at 3am by drunken morons like me. I heard a knock at the door and grinned, knowing it was Jack. I threw my hair up into a messy bun and made my way to the door.
“Excuse how trampy I look when you’ve made an effort, but it’s Sunday and I’m not leaving this building for the rest of the day,” I told him as I opened the door.
“I don’t know, you still look hot to me,” he smiled, kissing me quickly as he shuffled inside.
“God damn are you cute.”
“So, did you talk to Tammy?” He asked, glancing down the hall at the room we’d situated ourselves in.
“I did. She’s chill now. But apparently she also has Lisa’s number now, so I think they’re just going to freak out at each other instead.” Jack laughed, pulling me in for a hug.
“Come on, I’d best go impress your best friend.”
