My Personal Angel

One

“Shit, I’m going to be late,” I said as I was throwing my jacket on, desperate to get home before nine o’clock.

I ran out to my car and quickly started it. My mom was going to kill me if I wasn’t home before nine because I still didn’t have my full license because of reasons. I mean, I was eighteen but I should be getting it soon. I quickly started speeding home; I was out way too late with Rian and Zack. We were in a band and we got super distracted at band practice and his mom mentioned the time and I realized that I fucked up. It was about a twenty minute drive home and I only had ten minutes so maybe if I sped I could make it in that time.

“I should probably send her a text,” I thought out loud.

I pulled out my phone and typed out a message to my mom. I heard a loud horn and saw that I had drifted into the other lane. I quickly over adjusted and ripped the steering wheel in the opposite direction. I slammed on the brakes and felt them lock up under my foot. I closed my eyes before I heard the sickening crunch of metal.

I woke up and squinted, I heard a rhythmic beeping coming from next to me. I went to rub my eyes but I couldn’t raise my right arm. I immediately reached over with the left and felt the cast. I looked down and saw that my leg was also in a cast and breathing hurt a little bit. I looked around and saw a black haired boy sitting in the window seat, his head was down and he was playing with a yo-yo.

“Who are you,” I asked softly.

“Oh, you’re awake,” he responded, ignoring the question.

“Who are you?”

“Oh, how rude of me. My name’s Jack, I’m an angel.”

An angel, that means that I was dead. God, I fucked up, I should’ve just waited until I got home and explained what happened to my mother. I should’ve looked at the time closer; I should’ve been more responsible than I was. I was just and idiot and now this black haired boy was going to bring me to heaven or hell, whichever I believed in. To think I didn’t even believe in angels at all. Now I was talking to one because I was fucking dead.

“So I’m dead,” I asked.

He laughed, “No, you’re lucky that you’re not though. That’s your heart beat on the monitor. You’re just a lucky son of a bitch.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I’m a guardian angel, we’re here to protect people like you who need us.”

“So, I’m alive?”

“Barely but yeah. Quite a lot of bruising and a broken arm, leg and a few ribs. You’re alive and lucky as hell.”

My mom came in the room with a nurse right in tow. She pulled me into a hug and I winced as the pressure on my ribs was absolutely horrendous. She heard my wince and pulled away at a seconds notice. I still saw Jack sitting in the corner and no one mentioned him. Could they not see him? Was he actually not real and a figment of my imagination? I had to have hit my head pretty damn hard; I was in a car accident after all. I figured I’d just keep quiet about it.

“Well Alex, it’s a damn miracle that you’re here and pretty much in one piece,” the nurse said as she looked at the clipboard.

“I was so worried when I hadn’t heard from you or anything and then I got a call from here and you were in bad shape. You should’ve just been late and explained later. I would rather have you safe and grounded than where you are right now,” my mother scolded.

“I’m sorry Mom, I just wasn’t thinking is all,” I replied.

The nurse took some blood and left the room. Jack, my mom and I were the only ones here and it was silent enough to hear a pin drop. My mom sighed and sat right next to where Jack was which answered my question, no, she couldn’t see him at all. She put her head in her hands and shook her head slightly. I felt so bad that I was putting her through this. She had enough going on with how recent the move was and everything. I felt terrible for it.

“There must’ve been some fucking angel looking over you because you shouldn’t be here,” she said again, her voice breaking.

“Yeah, I think I have a guardian angel,” I replied.

Jack’s head perked up for the first time since my mom entered the room. A small smile spread across his face and he moved over to me in the blink of an eye. He looked about my age which made me sad, weren’t angels the spirits of people who had died? He pat my head carefully.

“You’ll always have me,” he whispered softly

Notes

So, I was looking through a shit ton of stories I wrote in my early teens last night and I saw this and thought it was a really cool concept. I hope y'all enjoy this story. The chapters will probably get a lot longer as time goes on, I was just really excited to get this story started. Since I'm back in school I need to re-figure out an uploading schedule around my classes and stuff so I'll work that out with time.

Rate and Comment if you enjoy :)
