Sparks Fly

Forty Four.

Brook-

Months ago, if someone would have told me that all I needed to do was add regular organized chaos to my schedule and I would become more relaxed, I probably would have thought they were crazy. Alas, just a few days on the road and I was essentially having the time of my life.

The first night of Warped Tour, I had a bit of an ah-ha moment of how drastic my life had changed since I met and then started dating Alex. I found myself sitting on the ground in the parking lot of the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City, in an oddly shaped circle amongst my boyfriend and his bandmates, individuals that I had come to associate as some of my closest friends, as well as members of bands I had grown up listening to.

The sixteen year old Brook inside me was practically doing jumping jacks at the moment when Ryan Key from Yellowcard offered me a beer from his own personal stash, while Chad Gilbert from New Found Glory sat across from me, telling a perfectly well rehearsed joke.

The tour was barely into its second stop and I was already convinced this was where I was supposed to spend my summer. I would never, ever, ever say it out loud and give Alex the ammunition to gloat, but he was right. I needed this.

The morning of the second stop of the tour, I was laying in the bunk with my back pressed close to Alex's chest, not that there was really any room for me anywhere else. My eyes were still closed, but I was mostly awake, my brain running a bit on overdrive as I wondered what the rest of the summer would have in store for me.

I wasn't sure how long I had been awake before I felt a warm pair of lips brush lightly against my bare shoulder, slowly inching their way up the side of my neck and behind my ear.

"Good morning to you, too, Alex," I smiled, my eyes fluttering open in time to see Alex lean over me to press a sweet kiss to my mouth.

It was lame but the idea that I would get to kiss him every single morning when I woke up and every single night before I fell asleep for the next two months straight was something that made me incredibly happy inside. It was something we have never been able to do.

"Good morning, beautiful," he smiled, sleepily pressing another kiss to my lips.

"You're up early," I noticed.

He laughed, a scratchy, sleepy laugh. "My sleep schedule tends to get screwed up with Warped Tour, especially factoring in jet lag."

"Well, Matt poked his head in before and said that you guys aren't playing until later, so you're free to sleep a little longer."

He smiled, sliding his arms around my waist and kissing my temple. "I don't know if I will sleep, but I'm definitely content staying like this a little longer."

I smiled this time and leaned up to kiss his chin lightly. "I can't wait to see you play again tonight."

"Really?"

I nodded. "I had so much fun yesterday."

He tightened his arms around me just a bit more. "That's good. Because if you ended up thinking we sucked, I don't know if could be your boyfriend anymore."

I laughed softly. "I definitely didn't think you sucked. Nothing even close to sucking."

"You're just saying that because you're kind of in love with me or something," he smirked.

"I am. But really, as a fan of music, as a band, you guys are really good."

"Well, thank you. That means a lot," he smiled.

"You're welcome," I said, leaning up to kiss him. "Do you ever get nervous? There were so many kids there yesterday. I was nervous for you."

He shrugged. "I don't really get nervous on stage anymore. Sometimes, if it's a really big show, or a live TV thing, I might freak out for a second or two, but I don't get nervous on Warped Tour. Everybody is just here for the music and after everything we went through as a band, dropping from one label and recording an entire album on our own and resigning with Hopeless, I'm just excited to play music and hang out with my friends," he explained. "And my fabulous girlfriend."

I smiled. "I'm also excited that my fabulous boyfriend is practically best friends with members of bands that I grew up listening to."

Alex laughed. "I grew up listening to them too."

I shook my head. "I can't imagine what it must feel like to name your band after a New Found Glory song and then become good friends with those guys."

He laughed again. "It's pretty surreal. I'm not going to lie."

"I'm proud of you," I said. "And I know that's lame because I didn't know you while you were just starting out but I know how hard you guys worked to get here and I know how hard you guys worked just this past year alone to stay here and it's a special thing you have," I paused, shrugging slightly. "I'm just proud."

Alex smiled, a big, goofy, cheesy smile as he tucked some of my hair behind my ear. "I'm proud of you, too. And for pretty much the same reason. You went through some messed up stuff and hit rock bottom and climbed your way out and I would say you're at a good place right now, huh?"

I smiled. "I think I'm at the best place right now than I've ever been before."

"I love you," he whispered before leaning down to kiss me.

"I love you, too," I said, smiling against his mouth.

"You know, since we're both awake, I can think of something we could do to pass some time."

"Oh yeah? What's that?" I asked, sliding my arms around his neck once he shifted our positions and was laying on top of me.

"I think you could figure it out," he said, pressing his lips to the side of my neck and gripping my hips tightly.

"I think so too," I said, biting on my lip slightly to suppress the moan that threatened to come up when Alex started to lightly nibble at the skin just underneath my ear.

Alex moved his lips to cover my own and carefully slipped his hands underneath my t-shirt, his warm hands moving up my bare sides.

Just as he moved to remove my t-shirt, we heard Matt yelling right outside the bunk.

"We have a major problem!" he announced.

"Does he say that every morning?" I whispered and Alex chuckled, still holding himself above me.

"If we're quiet, maybe he'll think we're still sleeping and he'll leave us alone," Alex said.

"Maybe, if you don't want someone to hear you talk shit, you shouldn't talk so loud," Matt grumbled, pulling back the curtain on the bunk and popping his head in.

"Shit," Alex hissed under his breath, carefully sliding off me and rolling to his side to face Matt. "Mornin' sunshine!"

"Yeah. Whatever. We have a problem."

Alex nodded. "And what's that?"

"Travis is sick," Matt replied.

"What kind of sick?" Alex asked.

"102 fever and throwing up since four o'clock this morning."

I couldn't see his face, but I knew Alex winced. "Okay... So..."

"So... It's going to be too damn hot and there's going to be too many damn people for Vinny to work merch on his own. I won't do that to him."

Alex nodded slowly. "Okay... So have one of the other guys do it with him. We can manage setting up."

"No," Matt grumbled. "You have too many things to do today, the regular set and acoustic one, two signings. I need all hands on deck."

"Matt, you're being a little dramatic. What would we need a guitar tech for at a signing? I'm sure Danny would-"

"He can't." Matt cut me off.

"Well, what do you want from me than, Matt? I gave you suggestions, and you've turned them down."

"Um," I sat up a bit, resting my chin on Alex's side so Matt could see me over Alex's body. "This maybe the wrong question to ask right now, but how is Travis? Did he take anything?"

Matt nodded. "I made him take aspirin to bring his fever down and told him to drink some tea to calm his stomach."

I nodded satisfied. "Okay good."

"I don't suppose you have any old family voodoo recipes you could whip up to make him feel better..." Alex said, craning his head a bit to look at me.

I shook my head. "Unfortunately not with the ingredients I'm going to find on these buses."

Matt was nodding slowly, and I noticed he was looking at me funny. After a couple of seconds, I had to look down and make sure in our brief heated moment, Alex didn't accidentally pull my shirt down a little too far, leaving me unaware of the free show I had been giving Matt but all of my clothing were in perfect order.

"Maybe..." he muttered under his breath.

"What?" Alex asked, his eyes following Matt's gaze on me. "No. Absolutely not. No way!"

"Oh, come on!" Matt whined. "Why not?"

I looked at them confused.

"Because she's my girlfriend. Not a volunteer work horse." Alex snapped.

I raised an eyebrow at the two of them as they continued to argue. It took a few seconds for me to realize Matt was suggesting I get behind the merch tent.

"Come on, Alex. It's perfect," Matt pleaded.

"No. It's far from perfect. It's one thing for those crazy girls to talk shit on the Internet, if you put her out there, she will be a sitting duck. They'll eat her alive."

Matt huffed, crossing his arms over his chest, his lips pressed closed tight in a thin line.

"Uh, hi," I interjected, raising my hand. "Girlfriend slash volunteer work horse here... Do I get a say in all this?"

"No," Alex answered quickly. "I'm sorry, Brook. I'm putting my foot down. No way."

"Do you want to?" Matt asked, completely ignoring Alex.

I shrugged. "Do you think I can?"

Matt nodded. "Can you add and subtract numbers that end in a zero or a five?"

Brook nodded. "I believe so."

"Brook, no," Alex kept saying.

"If you're in, I need you dressed and on your way out to the tent in thirty minutes," Matt said, closing the curtain of the bunk and disappearing.

"I think I can do it," I said to Alex when he didn't say anything after Matt left.

"Whatever," he shrugged.

"What do you mean whatever?"

"I mean, do whatever you want because clearly my opinion didn't count."

I frowned. "Don't be like that. I get that you're protecting me. But I can handle it. I promise."

He turned his body around to face me. "I know you're this big people pleaser, so promise me that you're not just doing this because you don't want to disappoint Matt."

"I'm doing this because my friends are in a jam and I want to help them out. I'm practically free loading on you guys for this entire tour, so I might as well be put to work when needed."

"Brook," he whined. "I don't like this."

"It's sweet that you're worried about me. But I promise I will be okay. I promise," I said, kissing his mouth gently.

He sighed loudly. "Are you sure? Like 100 percent sure?"

I nodded. "More like 1000 percent sure."

He sighed again. "Fine. Go ahead."

I smiled. "Secretly, it's always sort of been a bucket list thing of mine to work behind a merch tent for a band, at least once."

Alex chuckled. "Well, go on then," he gestured out of the bunk. "Go make your dreams a reality."

I smiled, climbing over him and pressing my lips down to his when I was mid-straddling him.

I jumped down from the bunk and just as I was about to walk away, Alex grabbed my arm and pulled me back.

"What's up?" I asked, poking my head back into the bunk.

"Could you maybe wear really big sunglasses and a hat to sort of disguise yourself?"

I laughed a little. "I'll see what I can find," I said and before I could walk away, he pulled me back again. This time, he pressed his lips firmly to mine, his hand resting on my cheek as he kissed me slowly.

It was quite incredible to me that after so many months together and so many kisses shared between us two, he still had the ability to make my knees feel just a little bit weak.

"Love you," he said softly as he broke from the kiss.

"I love you, too," I smiled, pecking a kiss to his lips and then the tip of his nose before I was able to successfully get away to get ready.

Alex-

To say I was worried about Brook was an understatement. The entire time I was away from her, I was imagining the worst.

I texted her every so often to see how things were going but I knew Brook, she would tell me everything was totally fine, even if it totally wasn't.

I texted Vinny too, probably more than I texted Brook. He assured me Brook was fine and that the fans that did manage to recognize her were very polite. He said there were a few who stood toward the side and snickered amongst themselves, but no one had out right been rude to her face.

When it was our turn to play, Vinny let Brook off duty for the 30ish minute set time we had, so she could come watch us.

I loved how excited she looked when she watched. It was only the third or fourth time she ever actually saw us live. I just hoped by the end of the tour she didn't get sick of us.

After our set, she gave me a big kiss, ignoring the fact that I was a sweaty mess, and told me that she loved me. She gave each of the other guys a high five before she ran off to get back to the tent because she felt awful for ditching Vinny. I don't think she realized that up until pretty much this tour, Vinny always worked merch alone.

That night, after most of the kids had been escorted off the property, some of the bands got together to have a few beers but mostly we all made it an early night. Most of us were heading into Vegas early the next day for Jack's big birthday bash.

I had gotten teased a few times from my band mates. They didn't think I was going to go all out and party hard like I usually would since Brook would be there. Apparently they felt I'd gone soft in the past few months. I shrugged it off like it didn't bother me, but it had struck a nerve in me somewhere.

In the handful of situations where alcohol was involved and Brook and I were present, she was usually the one getting wasted, while I sat back and babysat her. Now I was well aware that she really only did her drinking when she was with me but it was definitely my turn to be the irresponsible one for a change.

"Okay so tell me how it really was," I said once Brook and had I gotten comfortable in our bunk as we took off for Nevada.

Brook laughed. "You just don't give up, huh?"

I shook my head. "Not usually."

"I don't know exactly what you want me to say. It really wasn't bad at all. Most of the girls who realized who I was were really nice. Some even apologized for the mean things others were saying."

I nodded slowing. "And?"

"And... Some asked to take pictures with me. I'm not sure they even knew who I was. But they got ones with Vinny so I guess they felt bad not taking one with me. I felt kind of cool."

I laughed a little as Brook continued on with her excited banter.

"This one girl told me how when she first heard about me she immediately didn't like me. And then when she read that blog you posted about me, she totally changed her mind because clearly there was something special about me if you took the time to write that."

"You are special," I smiled, kissing her forehead.

"There were a few girls who stood toward the back and gave me glares and they whispered amongst themselves. I think some tried to be sneaky and get pictures of me and Vinny working which was kind of weird... But I promise you it was a totally pleasant experience. I hope I get to do it again."

I laughed. "I'm sure there's a good chance you may. How was Vinny? I know you two haven't had much time to get to know each other."

"Oh my gosh," Brook beamed. "He is so sweet. I know he kind of looks like a tough guy on the outside but he's so nice and he kept telling me all about his new girlfriend. I let him walk away for a little while so he could call her."

I smiled, and tucked some hair behind her ear as she sat Indian style in the middle of the bunk, her hands moving wildly around her lap as she spoke. I really loved this side of her. This was the way I was going she would always be.

"Are you bummed that you didn't get to watch any bands today, besides us? I know your goal was to be able to watch Yellowcard every day."

She smirked. "When the table was slow, Vinny and I took turns wandering. I got to catch a few songs of theirs. And Taking Back Sunday and New Found Glory, of course."

I nodded. “Sounds like you've gotten the hang of this lifestyle already."

She nodded slowly. “So far, so good."

I smiled and got myself comfortable against my pillow and under the covers. Brook quickly crawled towards me and followed suit but before she laid down, she pressed her lips firmly to mine.

"What's that for?" I asked when she pulled back.

She smiled, crawling under the blankets. "I kind of missed you today," she admitted.

I laughed a little and snaked my arms around her small body. "Well, I kind of missed you, too," I said, kissing the top of her head.

She rested her head on my shoulder and looked up at me. "So, what exactly am I in for these next three days in Vegas?"

I laughed a little. "Seeing as the last time we were in Vegas long enough to party, I got kicked out of a casino, Gabe Saporta threatened a security guard who threatened me and then I disappeared until the next afternoon, leaving everyone to think that I was dead somewhere, I'd say to expect the unexpected."

She nodded slowly, as if she was really thinking about everything I had just said. "Where did you end up?" she poorly hid a giggle.

I shrugged. "I passed out somewhere and just slept."

"I think I can handle this," she decided.

"There's one thing I should probably warn you about," I started.

She nodded. "Okay. What's that?"

"It's Jack's birthday and he's my best friend. So, I kind of have to be the life of the party. So just don't get upset if I sort of pay more attention to him. I don't know what it is, but whenever it's his birthday and I've had one too many drinks, I end up up his ass all night. Like, I don't let him out of my sight," I confessed.

Brook chewed her bottom lip, trying not to laugh. "That's sweet."

I rolled my eyes. "And you're sweet for trying hard not to laugh in my face."

I do my best,” she said, kissing my cheek lightly. "I love you,"

"I love you, too," I said. "Now remember that when you're watching me act a fool in Vegas."

i remember reading the first chapter of this a long time ago and I came across it again a few days ago. Ever since then I haven’t been able to stop reading. I know it’s been a while since you last updated but I hope you will start updating again some day. It’s such a good story and you’ve left it on the biggest cliffhanger! No pressure though, just thought I’d let you know that I’m still very interested in finding out what happens next. :)

That is very true all great stories must come to an end.

@BreaClift.
That’s really sweet to say! But unfortunately it will have to end eventually... :( The plus side to not having the inspiration to write for is it can live forever that way, haha.

Have you had a chance to start reading my stop Dirty Laundry? I actually put up a new chapter this week. :-)

I will honestly say. That this is one story I don’t want to ever end lol. Out of all the fanfics I have read over the years even about different bands. This is by far the best one.
