Sparks Fly

Forty Three.

Alex-

"Hey Jenn," I smiled, greeting Brook's best friend and roommate as she let me into their apartment.

"Hi Alex," she returned my smile, giving me a quick hug before closing the door behind me. "Brook's in her room. Packing. And unpacking. And then re-packing again."

"Is she in total psycho mode?" I asked, kicking off my sneakers and leaving them by the front door.

"I think she's almost there. She's been making lists. And then making other lists for what she needs to put on each list."

I nodded slowly, glancing at Brook's closed bedroom door. "I've sort of created a monster, huh?"

Jenn nodded. "I still can't believe that you actually convinced her to go with you for the entire summer."

"I can't believe it either. But if I'm being honest, it really didn't take much convincing. She gave in a lot quicker than I expected."

Jenn laughed. "She learned her lesson with Hawaii. You don't take no well."

"That's what I told her," I said with a laugh.

Jenn laughed and gestured towards Brook's bedroom. "You better get in there and try and distract her a bit. Try and see if she'll tell you what she wants for dinner. I'm pretty sure she hasn't even eaten all day."

"Aye aye, Captain," I mock saluted her before heading over to Brook's bedroom. I knocked once lightly and when she didn't respond, I pushed the door open slowly.

Brook had her back to me while she folded a pile of clothes on her bed. "Call Me, Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen was playing loudly from her computer speakers.

She had her hair pulled into a loose braid that hung over her left shoulder. She was wearing an old pair of running shorts what looked like a Glamour Kills t-shirt of mine I had either left at her house or she stole from mine. I hadn't seen her face yet, but I knew she looked absolutely beautiful.

I stifled a laugh as Brook sang along with the song, moving her hips back and forth in time with the beat.

I couldn't help but pull my phone from my pocket and dial Brook's number as she sang, "Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy. But here's my number, so call me, maybe."

Just as she started singing the second verse, she heard the muffled sound of One Direction singing from somewhere under a pile of clothes. She lowered the music after retrieving the phone and answered my call.

"Hey you," she chirped.

"Hi," I said and I watched her body jump at the sound of my voice not just coming through the phone.

"How long have you been standing there?" she asked, spinning around to find me standing in her door way.

"Long enough to know that if you ever pursued a musical career I wouldn't have to worry about you being a threat to my band," I teased.

She made a mock hurt expression on her face. "I'm hanging up on you now," she said into the phone before she disconnected the call and tossed the phone back onto her bed.

"I only tease because I love," I smiled, stepping further into the room and closing my arms around Brook's waist when I was close enough.

"You also only tease because you're a jerk," she added, leaning up and pressing her lips lightly to mine. "Hi."

"Hi," I smiled, kissing her again, a little longer this time. I hadn't seen her since last night and I truly missed her. "Hey, I've got a question for you."

"What's up?" she asked, resting her hands on my forearms.

"You sang Before you came into my life, I missed you so bad, I missed you so, so bad...How exactly do you miss someone so bad before you even know them"

"Jerk," Brook scoffed, smacking my arm before walking back towards her bed.

"You know," I laughed, following behind her. "If you keep hitting me so much, I'm going to start feeling like I'm in an abusive relationship."

"Oh Alex, I only hit because I love," she mocked me.

I laughed, taking a seat on the edge of her bed, accidentally causing one of her piles of clothes to topple over. I looked up at her, biting my lip. "You're going to punch me in the face now, huh?"

"Not yet," she said, taking a deep breath. "Could you just sit on the floor, please?"

I fixed the pile I had knocked over and carefully sat up, moving myself to sit on the floor amongst the three suitcases she had laying about. I stayed quiet for a little while, the only sounds now coming from Brook's computer when she hit play on her music again.

I hummed quietly to the New Found Glory song that was playing while Brook seemed to make sense of the piles of clothes on her bed, moving some to one of the suitcases, and moving some to other piles.

"Oh my gosh," Brook gasped. "I just realized something..."

"What's that?" I asked, looking up at her from the carpet.

"This is the New Found Glory song that you guys got the band name from," she pointed out as Head on Collision played from her laptop.

"Really?" I laughed. "You just realized it?"

"Shut up," she made a face at me. "I just recently updated the music on my computer. It's been awhile since I've heard a lot of these songs."

"By I recently updated the music on my computer, do you mean Jenn recently updated the music on my computer?" I asked with a smirk.

"No," she glared at me. "Jenn did the first CD and then I was able to do the rest, thank you very much."

I smiled, blowing her a kiss before laying back against the carpet. It really was going to be a fun summer with her on the road with me.

I wasn't lying when I told Jenn it didn't take long to convince Brook to come. I knew once we got back from Hawaii there wasn't going to be much time to convince her. We were home for a few days and while she was busy getting things in order for the online class she was going to teach for the summer - I had somehow missed the part where she minored in English - I left it alone. I didn't want to upset and overwhelm her. Especially when she came down with this brutal sinus infection that had her on these super strong antibiotics, that I'm pretty sure she still needed to take.

Once she started to feel better and I felt the time was right and I brought it up, she didn't immediately say no. She voiced some concerns she had with Internet connection and being able to get her work done at all times. I suggested we get her her own wireless Internet router that she would be the only one to have the password to and while she really had no idea what any of that meant, she seemed open to the option. I let her think about if for a day or two before I asked her again and it really shocked me when she smiled and said that she made up her mind and had decided that she would join me and the guys on the road for the entire Warped tour. I was pretty sure I had never been more excited for anything in my life. There was a small part of me that was nervous for Brook to be exposed to the Warped Tour lifestyle, but whatever nerves I felt quickly were shadowed by the fact that I didn't have to miss Brook for the two months I would be on tour.

I leaned back on the floor, stretching my arms above my head before pulling off the beanie that covered my head and sitting back up.

"Babe, is there anything I can do to hel-"

"What did you do?" Brook gasped, turning to look at me.

I looked at her funny before I realized I took my hat off and my new hair was exposed. "What?" I smirked.

"Your hair is pink."

I nodded. "Very good Brook."

"Alex! Your hair is pink," she repeated, leaning down and running a few fingers through my colorful hair.

"Brook," I placed a hand on each side of her waist and looked up at her from the ground. "I told you this was what I was doing before. I even sent you a picture of me sitting under the heat lamp."

"And I was supposed to believe you were actually dying your hair pink?"

I laughed. "Why would I make that up?"

"I don't know," she shrugged. "The same reason you pretended to propose to me in Hawaii? You're a weirdo."

I laughed again. "And since you brought it up, I would like to mention, once again, that you did not say no right away."

She scoffed as I rested my chin on her stomach and looked up at her again. "You really don't understand the position you put me in when you asked me that. What the heck would you have done if I said yes?"

"I would be the happiest man on earth," I said with a smirk and Brook rolled her eyes. "Or I would have jumped off the balcony, aiming for the ocean and just swam and swam until my arms gave out."

"That's more believable."

I laughed, kissing her stomach lightly through the thin fabric of her t-shirt. The truth was, and I would never dream of saying it to Brook, but the idea of marrying her didn't seem so bad. I was pretty sure that there was never going to be another girl that I cared for nearly half as much as her.

"But we're not talking about that. We're talking about you. And your hair."

"What about my hair?" I asked, looking up at her and grinning.

"It's pink! We're supposed to have dinner with my parents tomorrow night. What do you think my dad is going to say when he sees you looking so..." She paused for a second while she looked down at me, taking in my appearance. "Well, actually, you look rather cute."

"Yes!" I cheered. "I finally did something right!"

"Oh be quiet," she grumbled, trying to wiggle away from me but I just tightened my arms around her waist.

"Your dad loves me, Brook. I highly doubt he would let pink hair get in the way of that."

She nodded slowly, resting her hands on my shoulders."You may be right. You guys do seem to have some kind of weird bromance going on."

I laughed a little and looked up at her again. "Let's go eat. I'm starving."

"I'm good," she shook her head. "But there's plenty of left overs in the fridge if you want."

"I don't want. And Jenn wants to eat too. And she told me that you haven't eaten all day."

"I have too," she argued.

"Don't lie. I know when you get overwhelmed and stressed, you forget to do important things- like eat. Did you take your medicine today?"

"Yes. I'm fine," she said again. "You and Jenn can go get something if it's that big a deal to you."

"Fine. But you're coming," I decided.

"No, I'm not- Alex! What are you doing?" she squealed when I stood up and lifted her from the ground, tossing her body over my shoulder.

"We're going to eat," I told her, carrying her out to the living room.

"Alex. Oh my God. Please put me down," she pleaded.

Jenn must have heard all the commotion and came running into the living room. When she saw the display, she did a poor job masking her giggles.

"Grab her some shoes and get yourself ready. We're going to eat," I said to Jenn as Brook started kicking her legs.

"I'll eat. I promise. Just please put me down!" she whined.

"Quiet," I addressed Brook, adjusting my hold on her body. "Jenn, I will meet you out in the car."

"Alex. Not the stairs." I could hear Brook panic as I gathered my keys from the kitchen table and slipped my feet into my sneakers.

"It's fine," I assured her, opening the door and starting my decent down the stairs.

"Oh my God," Brook yelled, grasping at fistfuls of the back of my T-shirt to support herself. "Please don't drop me."

"Of course I'm not going to drop you," I assure her again, tightening my grip on her again.

"Okay. We're outside. Can you please put me down now?" Brook begged.

"Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'll put you down," I said, holding her tight with one arm while I used the other one to unlock and open the car door.

"I'm gonna kill you!" Brook shouted once I dumped her in the front seat of my truck.

I smiled, leaning down and kissing the top of her head, her braid having loosened significantly- hair sticking out in all directions.

She rolled her eyes at my gesture and I laughed, closing her door and going around to the driver's side and climbing into the car.

Brook opened her mouth to say something, but she stopped when Jenn climbed into the backseat. She still hadn't regained control of her giggles.

"Here you go, Brook," she said, passing Brook her flip flops.

"Thanks," she grumbled, leaning down and slipping on the shoes as I pulled away from the side of the road.

"Oh, Alex. That was awesome," Jenn said. "I needed that laugh."

"And you're welcome," I said, laughing a little but stopping quickly when Brook shot me a glare. "Oh. Come on, Brook. Admit it. It was funny."

"I will do no such thing," she huffed, crossing her arms over her chest and glancing out the window.

"Party pooper," Jenn mumbled under her breath from the backseat and I laughed again.

I slowed down to a red light and rested my hand on Brook's knee, causing her to look up at me.

"I love you," I said.

"You're such a jerk," she said, shaking her head, a smile finally cracking on her face and there may have been a hint of laughter to her voice.

I shook my head. "I think the appropriate reply would be I love you, too, Alex," I said, leaning close to Brook's face.

"I love you, too," she grumbled and I leaned in even closer and kissed her quickly.

"Gross," she hissed when I pulled away as the light turned green.

Jenn laughed. "Oh yeah right. Gross. There is nothing that boy does to you with his mouth that's gross."

"Jenn, shut up," Brook hissed. "Please."

"Oh?" I asked, looking at Jenn in my rear view mirror, my interest peaked.

"Well, I won't go into detail because Brook's my girl and I can't totally throw her under the bus. But, let's just say she's a really big fan of the way you kiss," she said, her eyes glancing a little bit south at the end of her sentence.

"Really?" I glanced over at Brook whose cheeks were turning a light shade of pink.

"Oh my God. Can we please talk about anything else?"

I smirked, giving her knee a light squeeze. "I like the way you kiss, too," I told her and she looked up at me with a smirk.

"Oh, that's good. Because it's going to be a really long time until you get that again," she said, smiling at me as she re-braided her hair.

Jenn laughed from the back seat and Brook spun around quickly to face her. "And don't you worry. I'll get you back too."

"Me?" she gasped. "I didn't do anything!"

"Oh Alex. You're so funny. Let's team up and make Brook miserable," Brook mocked what I assume she thought Jenn sounded like.

"I don't sound like that," was all Jenn said and Brook turned around in her seat, a satisfied smile on her face.

Not much longer after that, I pulled into the parking lot of a nearby diner. It was actually the diner Brook and I had gone to the first night that we met.

We climbed out of the car and I smiled when Brook slipped her hand into mine and leaned herself into my side as we walked into the building.

We were seated quickly and Jenn rolled her eyes when Brook and I slipped into one side of the booth and she had the other.

"And just like that, you're back to being all lovey dovey," Jenn scoffed.

Brook let out a small giggle before pressing a kiss to my cheek. "You're just jealous because your boyfriend isn't as naturally adorable as mine is."

Jenn laughed. "If I had a boyfriend, he probably would be."

Brook nodded. "Alex, do you have any single friends we can set her up with? What about Danny? He's great."

I shrugged. "I don't know about Danny. He's still really into that girl from the bar. What about J-"

"No!" Jenn lifted up her hand to stop me from talking. "I don't wish to be set up. I'm perfectly fine being single right now. It's a choice."

"Sure it is..." Brook mumbled.

"I'm serious," Jenn said. "I'm not gonna get through Med school whoring around. Plus, I want to fix hearts, not break them."

Brook nodded. "Okay. Okay. I'll drop it. But," she turned to me. "I know who you were going to say, and I think it would be great."

"I know, right?" I said proudly.

"Wait. Who?" Jenn said.

"Nope," Brook shook her head. "You're not interested. So, you'll never know," Brook said, lifting up her menu and skimming the pages.

Throughout the rest of our meal, we talked about the kind of assignments Brook was going to give her on-line writing class, they asked me a lot about Warped Tour and some of the craziness I've seen over the years of doing the tour. The conversation took a turn for a little sad when Jenn mentioned how she was going to miss Brook - It hadn't dawned on me that this was probably the longest they'd ever been apart since they were kids.

I tried to lighten the mood by assuring Jenn she could come out to visit whenever she wanted. And while she didn't act like she'd be able to, I was willing to bet she would do whatever she had to to be able to come out just for a few days.

By the time we got back to the apartment, it was after 8 o'clock. Jenn retired to her bedroom to go back to studying and I sprawled out on the living room couch watching TV while I left Brook to finish what she had been doing in her bedroom when I got there earlier.

By 10:30, she had finished for the night, taken a shower and crawled into bed. It didn't take long for me to join her, snuggling close to her under the blankets.

"So, do you have everything all packed yet?" I asked when the TV show we had been watching went to commercial.

She laughed, leaning up on her elbows and looking up at me. "You're kidding, right?"

"I guess not," I laughed. "How many lists do you have now?"

"Too many," she laughed, sitting up and reaching for her phone on the nightstand. I watched as she opened up an app that held all the different lists she had to complete before we left.

"Let me see that," I said, taking her phone from her and skimming over some of the lists. "You really need to remind yourself to pack your birth control?"

"Probably not," she shrugged, snatching her phone back from me and placing it back on the night stand. "But would you really want to take that risk?"

I shrugged. "Well..."

"Don't," she cut me off. "Can we skip the part where you convince me that forgetting my birth control would be okay, because then I could get pregnant and you just can't wait to have babies? And then just when I'm in full panic attack mode, you tell me you're kidding?"

I laughed, resting my head against her shoulder and wrapping my arms around her body, squeezing her a little too tight. "You're never going to let me live that one down, huh?"

She cracked half a smile, kissing my forehead softly. "Probably not."

"I love you," I said and she smiled before I kissed her lips softly.

"Why?" she asked.

I laughed. "What?"

"Seriously. At one point did you realize 'Wow, this girl is crazy. I love her.'?"

"You're not crazy, Brook," I said, trying to keep a straight face. "Maybe a little OCD, but not crazy."

"You're cute," she smiled at me.

"I know," I shrugged.

She laughed. "You never answered my question."

"What question is that?"

"When did you realize you loved me?"'

"When did I realize I love you? Would you believe me if I said the moment I opened my door and found you on my porch with Baz?"

She laughed. "No. I wouldn't."

"Okay," I paused for a second. "You know when I first realized it? For real. When you told me every thing about Josh."

She tilted her head to the side. "Really? You realized you loved me when I was a crying, blubbering hot mess?"

I shrugged. "You were so upset talking about how hurt you had been and at that moment I kind of promised myself that I would never let anyone hurt you like that. I guess what better way you protect your heart than to make it mine forever, right?"

She stared at me for a couple of seconds, not saying anything and I immediately regretted the use of the word forever. I felt even more regret when her eyes went glassy and her bottom lip stuck out over her top one.

"Alex," her voice cracked at the end of my name. "That's the nicest, sweetest thing you have ever said to me."

I smiled, relaxing again. "It's the truth. And I like to think I've been mostly doing a good job."

She smiled and leaned forward, pressing her lips to mine quickly. "You're doing a great job."

"Thanks," I smiled. "But wait, don't think you're getting off so easy. When did you know you loved me?"

She laughed. "Would you believe me if I said when I stood on your porch with Baz and you opened the front door?"

"Nope," I rolled my eyes, laughing at her joke.

"Hmm," she thought for a second. "I would have to say when we went to prom."

I smirked. "Are we talking about the actual prom or what happened afterward?

She shook her head and I could see a blush spread across her cheeks. "The whole night but yes, specifically with what happened afterward," she mumbled.

"I'm that good, huh?" I smirked.

"That's not what I mean."

"So I'm not good?" I frowned.

"That's not what I mean either! she laughed. "I think what about that night that made me realize was how sweet and gentle and caring you were being with me. Any other guy in that position would have just went for it... You didn't."

I smiled as she laid back down against her pillow and pulled me with her. "I'm not so bad of a guy really, huh?"

She rested her head on my shoulder and wrapped her arm around my waist. "Nah. You're alright."

"Speaking of the whole I love you thing, did you have anyone nagging you about saying it?" I asked.

"Oh my gosh, yes! My mom told me was shocked to find out that we hadn't said it yet. She said we both practically had it tattooed on our foreheads," Brook said excitedly.

"She was right," I laughed. "There was a time Jack told me to stop being a pussy and just tell you already."

"I like the way we said it though. It makes for quite a good story."

"I agree," I smiled, leaning and kissing the top of her head.

We fell into a mostly comfortable silence after that. I was sure she had fallen until Brook rolled over and rested her chin on my chest and looked up at me.

"I'm really excited about this summer," she said.

"You are?" I practically beamed.

She nodded. "I am."

"And why is that?" I asked her, wrapping my arms around her.

She smiled. "Because I can't wait to get to watch you play every night."

i remember reading the first chapter of this a long time ago and I came across it again a few days ago. Ever since then I haven’t been able to stop reading. I know it’s been a while since you last updated but I hope you will start updating again some day. It’s such a good story and you’ve left it on the biggest cliffhanger! No pressure though, just thought I’d let you know that I’m still very interested in finding out what happens next. :)

@BreaClift.
That’s really sweet to say! But unfortunately it will have to end eventually... :( The plus side to not having the inspiration to write for is it can live forever that way, haha.

Have you had a chance to start reading my stop Dirty Laundry? I actually put up a new chapter this week. :-)

I will honestly say. That this is one story I don’t want to ever end lol. Out of all the fanfics I have read over the years even about different bands. This is by far the best one.
