Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't)

There's A Pamphlet For That

Victoria sprinted all the way home. She couldn’t fucking believe it. Alex Gaskarth had kissed her! She was absolutely elated. She’d tried to play it off cool, but inside, she was freaking out. She’d always wanted to try to be something more than just friends with Alex, but he always seemed to think of her as a best friend or a little sister. When she got home, she had to refrain from getting excited. Her parents had never approved of Alex, not even as a friend.
“Vic, is that you?” Victoria’s mom, Susan, called from upstairs.
“No, Mom, it’s a serial killer who just happens to have keys to the front door.” Victoria responded, kicking off her boots at the front door.
“Don’t give your mother that sarcasm.” Victoria’s dad, Andrew, was walking down the stairs. “Go sit in the living room.” Victoria didn’t move.
“Am I in trouble?” Victoria asked.
“No. Family meeting. Now go sit in the living room.” Andrew repeated. With an eye roll, Victoria flopped herself into a chair in the living room. Her parents stood in the doorway and her parents exchanged a quick whisper—Victoria thought she heard the terms “Alex”, “bad influence”, and “eye rolling” from her mom. Because Alex was definitely the only kid in the world who could influence a girl so badly as to roll her eyes. God forbid. Next thing you know, Victoria would be sticking her tongue out at her dad.
“What are we meeting about?” Victoria inquired once her parents had finally sat down in the room.
“Well, sweetie, we have news.” Susan said tenderly. Susan never said anything that sugary, so Victoria braced herself for the bad news. Grandpa died? Mom lost her job?
“We’re moving.” Andrew said. Victoria sat forward .
What?” Right when things were going well in her social life. “Where? Out of the city?” Victoria demanded eagerly.
“Out of the state.” Andrew said. “We’re moving to California.” This couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t be. From Maryland to California? Victoria couldn’t speak. She couldn’t hardly force out a single word.
“W-when?”
“Next month.” Susan said. “I know this transition is going to be hard for you, but we got some pamphlets that we hoped--” Victoria darted upstairs. Fucking pamphlets. Was there a pamphlet that told you how to kill yourself painlessly? What about how to convince your parents they’re being unreasonable? No? No pamphlets for that? Victoria just wanted to disappear. She picked up her phone. She had to call Alex, but she couldn’t find the nerve to dial his number. Not after he’d kissed her. There was so much spark in that kiss, and Victoria couldn’t leave that behind. She would have to fix this herself.
