Snake-Bite Hearts and Bubblegum Smiles

Brooke

I found it a little funny how close Jane and I had gotten in just a week. I thought, at first, that she would have a hard time adjusting to my friends and how we all were, but to my surprise, she fit in as if she had always been a part of the group. She had especially clicked well with Jack. No one had said anything yet, but everyone could see their feelings growing. The way Jack got extra enthusiastic whenever Jane was around and the way Jane's face blushed a little bit every time he practically mauled her to say hello. I smiled to myself, thinking about how cute they would be if they ever got together.

"Brooke!" someone called from the basement. "The movie's starting, hurry your ass up!"

Just as the microwave timer went off, I pulled open the little door and pulled out the steaming hot bag of buttery goodness. I dumped the popcorn out into a big bowl and hurried down the stairs, shoving a small handful of popcorn into my mouth along the way. It was the first night that we were all officially off for Spring Break and all the girls were spending the night at Jane's house. We all had our stuff packed in my car and would be on our way to Jersey in the morning.

"Brooooooooooooke!" Jane whined as I appeared at the bottom of the staircase. She was lying on the big, fluffy blanket that we had laid out on the floor earlier, twisting and rolling around like a puppy. "Me want food!"

Laughing, I walked over to the couch where Kara was reclining and plopped down in the middle, crossing my legs under me and resting the bowl of popcorn in my lap. "Calm yo tits woman!" I said, throwing some popcorn at Jane. She sat up, narrowing her blue eyes at me as she shook the popcorn off her body.

"Sh!" Lisa flailed her arms about as the opening scene of Pirates of the Caribbean came on screen. "Everyone shut up, I need to hear my Orlando!" she swooned just by the thought of him.

"Um no, actually Johnny Depp is way sexier than Orlando Bloom," I argued, causing Lisa to gasp in horror.

"You're kidding right? How can you say no to Orlando Bloom?"

"I guess I just have better taste than you," I shrugged, giggling as I ate another fist full of popcorn.

"Yeah I mean, Lisa, you are dating Gaskarth after all…" Kara joined in laughing. Lisa rolled her eyes and turned back to the movie.

"I think Orlando's banging…" Jane said quietly. Lisa shot up from her seat and pointed at Jane zealously.

"Thank you!" she exclaimed, "Finally someone with eyes and good judgment!"

"Speaking of good judgment…Jane, any guys at school catch your eye?" I wiggled my eyebrows at her suggestively. A light blush crept up her neck, into her cheeks as she looked down to the floor. "I think that's a yes!" I sang in an annoyingly high-pitched tone.

"Who is he?" Kara asked eagerly, hopping down from her spot on the couch, next to Lisa and Jane. I joined them on the floor, waiting for Jane to speak up.

"I don't know what you guys are talking about," she kept her cool, but I could tell something was up.

"Bull!" I shouted. "I bet it's Jack, right? I see the way you get when he comes around!"

"Oh my gosh you like Jack?" Lisa gasped. "That's so cute!"

"I don't like Jack! I mean…he's Jack…that’s like…uh…liking a dog. Or something." Jane said, her cheeks still slightly red. She was beginning to look more confident in her answer, and Kara and Lisa agreed. I eyed her skeptically, but decided to drop the subject.

"I really can't picture Jack as the boyfriend type either," I agreed.

"I can't picture any of the guys being all romantic and shit," Jane added. "What are they like?" she asked, turning to Lisa and Kara.

The two girls just shrugged.

"Well, Rian's really sweet. He's kind of whipped too and I can't say I have any problem with that," Kara laughed with a smirk evident on her face. It was true too. Rian would do anything for Kara no matter what. As long as she was happy, he didn't need anything else.

"What about Alex? What's he like?" Jane pressed, looking to Lisa.

"I don't know…he's actually kind of sensitive—"

"So he is the woman in the relationship?" I interrupted.

"Yeah pretty much," Lisa snorted. Kara and Lisa continued to go on about the sides of Alex and Rian that Jane and I rarely got to see. In all honesty, it really didn't interest me all that much, so I got up and grabbed the remote, taking my seat back on the couch and went back to watching the movie. As I watched, I couldn't help but wish I was more like Jack Sparrow. He was witty, adventurous, a little bit off his rocker, but all in all free. He could go anywhere and do anything at any time he pleased.

Sometimes I felt like I was confined to these four walls and the borders of Baltimore. I wanted adventure. I wanted excitement. I just wanted to get away and do whatever the hell I felt like doing just because I could. I sighed, pulling the now practically empty bowl of popcorn closer to me. All that was left was the kernels that never popped and the burnt pieces that no one else had wanted to eat.

Just a few more hours Brooke. I told myself, throwing my head back on the couch cushion. A few more hours and you'll be out of here.

It was bright and early the next morning and I couldn't remember the last time I had felt so energized this early. We were loading little last minutes things into my car as we waited for the guys to arrive. Lisa, Kara, and Jane had stayed up practically all night and were walking zombies as they dragged their stuff out of the house and onto the driveway. It was kind of pissing me off that they were so out of tune. It was Spring Break. We were road tripping to New Jersey. What more did anyone need to get excited?

Finally after we had everything packed and loaded, Alex's car came driving up the street, stopping right in front of Jane's house.

"Morning ladies!" Rian greeted, getting out of the car. He walked up the driveway and quickly kissed Kara before turning to the rest of us. "Ready to go?" he asked. I nodded vigorously, looking as if I was about to jump out of my skin. "Whoa, whoa, who put firecrackers in your pants?" Rian laughed, clearly enjoying watching me act like a crazy lady.

"I just want to get on the road already!" I said.

"Where's Alex?" Lisa asked her voice low and raspy.

"He's passed out in the car," Rian answered, pointing behind him.

"He let you drive?" I asked, my eyes catching the shine off the keys in Rian's clutched hand.

"Yup."

"He must be delirious…" I cracked a smile and walked over to the car. I tapped my knuckles on the partially open window to Alex's side door. "Wakey, wakey!" I shouted, rousing the sleeping Alex from his sleep. He glared up at me, his eyes narrowed tightly, trying to block out the stinging sunlight.

"Fuck off," he muttered, turning on his side so that his back was to me. I just laughed with a smug grin on my face.

"That's not very nice language Alexander William," I scolded teasingly.

"Bitch."

"Alright, we should head out if we want to make good time," Rian said, coming up from behind me. I nodded and waved bye to him as he climbed back into the driver's seat. I walked back up to the other girls and we all got in the car, Lisa and Kara in the backseat and Jane up front with me. I put the key into the ignition and started the engine.

Get ready Jersey, here I come.
