Prologue

Walking into Rita's Italian Ice—a popular hangout place after school or on lazy weekends for all the students of Dulaney High—with my blackberry in hand and two of my friends, Marissa Blake and Courtney Anderson, on either side of me, I walked up to the counter to order my usual.

"I'll have a chocolate Reese's Pieces Blendini," I told the boy behind the counter. He immediately went to work. I checked my blackberry again to check for any new BBMs and quickly updated my status. At Rita's with my bitchess <3

"You keep ordering those Blendy things, Laur, your ass is going to be huge…" Marissa commented, her face full of disgust as she watched the frozen custard ooze from the machine and into the cup. I rolled my eyes. Marissa was obsessed with being fit and eating healthy. I was surprised she didn't burst into flames whenever she stepped foot into a place like this.

"Well then all the boys will be in my yard and you'll be the lonely, flat-butted hoe, drowning in your pool of envy!" I retorted with a smirk. I was always oddly descriptive with my comebacks. What can I say? I have quite an imagination. She huffed indignantly and turned to find a table for the three of us. Courtney and I turned to each other and giggled. Marissa was overly sensitive, but we knew she never really took anything we said to heart.

Courtney ordered herself a Blue Raspberry Italian Ice and after we paid for our sweet fixes, she and I tossed our change into the little glass jar beside the register that had a piece of masking tape wrapped around the side labeled "Tips" and walked over to the table Marissa had saved for us. I sat down and spooned a small glob of the frozen treat into my mouth, receiving a slight chill pleasantly coursing through my body.

"So we have major planning to do," Courtney clapped her hands together excitedly. Her seventeenth birthday was just around the corner and every year she threw a huge bash to celebrate. The entire school looked forward to her parties. Even some of the seniors would try to sneak in or tag along with their junior friends. "I've got the DJ booked, I just need to finalize the guest list and you two have to come over after school tomorrow for cake tasting."

I spooned another glob of my frozen custard into my mouth as Courtney allocated our annual birthday duties. They were all pretty much textbook to me by now so I didn't pay much attention. The chimes on the door jingled and I glanced over my shoulder to catch who was walking in. He wore a heather grey hoodie that was zipped up, dark wash skinny jeans, along with a pair of Vans sneakers. He had scruffy dark brown hair and wore his headphones around his neck, the cord disappearing inside his pocket.

"Um, hey, hello?" I was broken out of my gaze by Courtney's snapping fingers.

"Do I look like your puppy?" I raised my eyebrow.

"Who were you looking at?" Marissa asked already scoping out the entire room with her baby blue eyes. I turned back to see where the boy had gone. He was now standing by the counter talking to the boy behind the register, a smile adorning his lips. "Oh no, tell me you weren't checking out Alex Gaskarth…" she said, her voice monotone.

"What?" I whipped around to face her. "That's Alex?"

He certainly had changed a lot over the summer. Last year his hair had been lighter and much longer. He would always walk around in light wash, baggy jeans and Bob Marley t-shirts and was pretty much the biggest goofball well…ever. He wasn't the type to take much seriously.

"Hey!" Courtney snapped, demanding our attention. "Focus!"

Marissa smirked. "Hey Court, Alex is in a band you know. Maybe you should book him," she grinned evilly with a wink. Courtney scoffed.

"Right, like I would invite punk boy and his weird friends to play at my birthday party…" she said. The three of us laughed. I stole one last glance back to the front counter where Alex was. There were two employees by the register now and I could only guess those were his friends. He looked back at me and smiled. I laughed softly to myself and turned back to Marissa and Courtney. As if.
