Smooth Criminal

seven.

It turned out that my dad hadn’t been home at all that weekend either, so I didn’t really get in trouble when Alex dropped me off Saturday night. My mom was just concerned that she hadn’t heard from me in almost twenty-four hours but that’s about it. We both agreed that my father didn’t need to know about my weekend off from perfection. Sometimes I truly wonder why someone as laid back and carefree as my mother married someone as controlling and uptight as my father. But then I remember how cool my dad can be sometimes. Like the time he took the day off to take Rory, Parker, and I to the amusement park when we were smaller. He just gets so wrapped up in his work and he has a hard time unwinding from the stress of the job. That’s all.

“So, I’m thinking that instead of going to your house today, we can chill at my place and work on the project,” Alex says as he walks up to mine and Amanda’s lunch table. “You’re gonna get in trouble one of these days.” He glances at Amanda as she tags a drag of her cigarette and she just flips him off.
“Until that day, I will continue doing what I’m doing, Gaskarth.”
I rolled my eyes at the two as they bickered like children and continued working on my physics paper. Would I really be able to go to Alex’s house? Even though we’re just doing homework, is that really something my dad would allow me to do?
I blew a strand of my bangs out of my face and tightened the ponytail that sat high on my head, getting more and more frustrated with my life as I thought about how shitty it actually was.
“C’mon, Stells. Just hang out with the poor child so he’ll leave me alone,” Amanda pleaded. I stared at the two and pinched the bridge of my nose. “You’re working on homework the entire time. I don’t understand why your father would even say no.”
“Because he’s a he,” I muttered dryly, rolling my eyes.
“I already told my mom you were coming over tonight, so I mean, you really have no other choice,” Alex speaks up. I wanted to slap that shit-eating grin off his face so badly.
“You’re a monster,” I growled at him.
“I just figured we should give your parents a break for the afternoon considering I’ve been at your house for the last week.” He gave me the most innocent smile he could possibly conjure up, causing me to roll my eyes once again.
“I literally hate you, Gaskarth.”

Once school let out, I made my way to the student parking lot to find Alex so that we could head to his house and work on the project. However, once I saw that Jack Barakat, Alex’s right hand man, was with Alex, something in my gut told me that we weren’t going to get a whole lot done today.
“Stella,” Jack greeted me with a head nod. I waved at him and climbed into the back seat of Alex’s car while the two boys stretched their way into the front seat.
“So…” Alex began as he drove. “I’ve made the rational decision to not do our project today and just hang out with the guys.” I scoffed and crossed my arms over my sweater-clad chest.
“Something tells me you made that decision before you told me I was coming over,” I shot back at him. He smirked at me through the rearview mirror and wiggled his eyebrows.
“You’re such a smart person. It kills me.”
“Bite me,” I grumbled.
Jack chuckled from the passenger seat and flipped through the various Blink-182 songs on his iPod. “This one’s feisty,” Jack stated. “I like her.”
“I thoroughly enjoy how you two are acting like we’ve never met before this month. I’ve literally known you two for years.” My attitude was getting hard to subside due to the fact that my limits were being pushed too far and I was getting super uncomfortable. Jack turned around to look at me from his seat and I rolled my eyes. “I’m Parker’s little sister? Seriously? We have the same last name. Everyone in this goddamn town knows our dad.”
“Oh shit! I just never put two and two together.” Jack seemed completely dumbfounded by his latest discovery.
“That’s why you’re failing math. Again,” Alex joked. Jack grumbled a sweet ‘fuck you’ under his breath and sank back into his seat to sulk. Shortly, Alex pulled into a driveway that I automatically assumed was his. The three of us got out of the car and Alex fumbled around for his house key as we made our way to the front door. It was slightly chilly outside, so I tugged my sweater closer to my body and bounced up and down to keep warm. Once I heard the lock click open, it took all of the will power in my body to not plow Alex over and just sprint into the warm embrace of his house.
“My humble abode.” Alex led me down the front hall and we were instantly standing in a nice, tidy living room. Jack disappeared into the kitchen while I awkwardly stood there, not quite sure what I should do. I don’t exactly do the whole “friends” thing very often, so this was new territory for me.
“You have a really pretty house,” I awkwardly comment, not sure what else to say.
“Thanks, dude. My parents bust their butts to keep it somewhat orderly.” He gives me a small smile and then walks over to the TV. “Any movie you’d like to watch?”
“HOME ALONE!” We hear from upstairs. Alex rolls his eyes.
“WE ARE NOT WATCHING THAT STUPID MOVIE AGAIN, JACK.”
I laugh and walk over to where Alex was crouched down, flipping through a DVD holder.
“Awh, The Notebook,” I gush. Alex rolls his eyes and shakes his head. “Do not tell me you haven’t watched this and not cried your eyes out, Alexander. Every guy has secretly done it.”
“I didn’t cry,” Alex quickly retorts.
“You bawled like a little bitch,” Jack adds as he sauntered back into the room. Alex’s face turned a bright red and I giggled.
“The Notebook it is.”

By the time the movie had ended and the credits were rolling across the TV screen, three teenagers sat in the Gaskarth living area with red noses and puffy eyes.
“I just wish someone would love me that much,” Jack said softly, contemplation evident in his eyes. The garage door could be heard opening at this time, so I assumed that Alex’s mother had just gotten home.
“Shit,” Alex breathed, wiping the tear stains from his face. His eyes were still bloodshot and puffy and his face was still red from crying but I wasn’t going to say anything.
“Hello,” Mrs. Gaskarth chirped as she entered the house.
“Hi, mom,” Jack and Alex said in unison.
“Hello,” I replied quietly.
“You must be the infamous Stella,” the woman gushed. “I’ve heard lots about you, dear.” Her smile reminded me so much of Alex.
“What’s for dinner?” Jack asked abruptly. Mrs. Gaskarth chuckled at the boy and set her purse down on the coffee table.
“Your father is staying late at work tonight,” she says directed towards Alex. “So I’m thinking pizza?” The two boys whoop and holler at the mention of pizza and I grin excitedly. “I’ll go place the order in a minute. So who’s idea was it to watch The Notebook.” The smirk on the woman’s face was enough to make Alex and Jack turn a very dark shade of red.
“It’s the only movie that makes me cry…” Alex admitted sheepishly.
“It’s okay, Lex. I understand. You’re just a softy,” I tease him.
“My d-”
“Mother in the room,” Alex cuts off his best friend before Jack could finish whatever dick joke he was about to make, causing Jack to sulk like a toddler. Mrs. Gaskarth chuckled and left the three of us alone.
“My dick is soft…” Jack finally says quietly, knowing that the effect of joke was ruined. I giggled anyway.
Maybe having friends and having a life was something I should have tried out a long time ago.

Notes

The last chapter, this chapter, and the next two are kind of short and I'm sorry. Buuut once chapter nine comes, they get a bit lengthier and they're full of drama and mush and shit like that. Also, yay for Jack finally coming into play! Of course I had to put in some kind of dick joke for his debut chapter. What kind of person would I be if I didn't?

As always, thank you for reading! Chapter 8 will be published when I finish writing chapter 12. Have a happy Easter, or regular weekend if you don't celebrate Easter. Whatever floats your boat.

This was one of my absolute favorite stories. I am very curious to know if you are going to continue with this? Because I have to know what happens next.

I don't remember anything. I need to restart this. Damn, all I remember is loving this. Only more reason to read it all again.

Haha, keepin' it real. :) No worries, the only one that was kind of concerning was the Blink-180 because I think that's the first time I've ever seen that. XD But I figured it was a typo.
