Twenty-Two Calamities

|

Two weeks ago Lisa wrote my name in her chemistry book. She decided to be my partner in chemistry once she discovered that I was one of the best chemistry students and that Mike, her old partner, was a daily wanker. No one actually called him Mike, we all called him Hanker Wanker after Lisa spread the rumors that his semen was all over his books and table and locker.
I thought it was mean at first, until I realized why she did it.

Two weeks ago, Lisa decided she wanted to be friends with me after her fall outs with her friends and after her boyfriend Rian cheated on her with Cassadee… her best friend. Two weeks ago Lisa wanted to come over to my place instead of go to the school’s most popular after prom party. Two weeks ago Lisa took me with her to the town festival and held my hand the whole time. Two weeks ago I was in love with Lisa Ruocco and I still am.
Two days ago I became a suspect of Lisa’s absence because I’d suddenly become so close to her.
Everyone thinks she’s dead now and they all pretend they miss her when all they’re doing is spreading rubbish rumors about her. I mean, no one even knew her like I did. She did not deserve to be the subject of hundreds of rumors or slut-shamed or embarrassed or teased. She was popular until she wrote my name in her chemistry book… well; at least that’s what I thought it was.

I sit in between Jack and Stella in the library, the only two people in my life right now who I actually care about. Two things you should know:
1)Jack is my gay best friend
2)Don’t ever double cross Stella. When she’s right she’s right and when she’s wrong she’s still right.

“Damn, how’re you taking things right now?” Stella says and flips her short blonde bangs out of her face. I shrug my shoulders. I don’t really know how else to react.
“They haven’t found a body yet.”

“Oh they have!” Jack says in a matter-of-fact way and my heart skips a beat. Shit. Shit. “I was watching the news this morning; they found a body burnt beyond recognition in this weird abandoned cabin in the woods somewhere.”

There’s no way that could be her. That can’t be her. It just can’t.

“Ay, easy tiger! You’re scaring the kid,” Stella smacks Jack’s thigh then turns to me. “She’s okay; don’t listen to this hairy pussy. I bet she’s in a café somewhere drinking coffee and watching the Wizard of Oz.”

I smile at Stella just to let her know her words are comforting then I get up again and sprint into the bathroom. My throat clogs up and I can’t breathe. That can’t be right, she can’t be dead. I bend over the sink and soak my face with the cold water. It’s not cold enough to numb my face until it peels off, but it’ll do. A vibrating sound fills the empty bathroom and I take my phone out of my pocket. I open the folder sent to me from a private number. It’s a voice message, so I press play:
Rule #1,
Don’t leave a girl in a cabin by herself. Heck, like I know how to tame a flame, ha!

That voice. That laugh. I can almost imagine her smirking in this voice message. It’s her. She’s alive.
